I also think he may have chosen to let go after Easter Sunday, symbolising the resurrection and giving his flock hope. I used to work in palliative care and there’s a strong belief people can control the moment of their death.

GinGanGoooooolie · 21/04/2025 13:11

@vandelier I think I would really enjoy that book, he wrote The Darkest Hour didn’t he, I’ve reserved it at the library, thanks for mentioning it.

I’m a Catholic and this Pope was far too woke for me. Unfortunately I think the next choice will be even woker.

In what ways was he too ‘woke’ in your opinion? Most of his admirers here seem to have been pleased he was regarded as progressive, would be interesting to hear what policies and changes he made you disagreed with?

His last effort was to meet Vance. Must have been hard.

Nobody is forced to follow him that's your choice

I don't see it that way. I suspect it was Pope Francis who wanted to deliver the Easter message and be seen by the crowds at such an important time in the Christian calendar. He was at the end of his life, perhaps he saw it as his final duty.

Poor man, being forced to go out and about so publicly when he was hours from dying.

i found that cruel and shocking, doutless people will say that was what he wanted but kitting him out in all that regalia and putting him on the balcony seemed dreadful to me. I am not religious and I thought it was horrible

I doubt if he was "forced'. From what I've heard about him, it seems like he knew his own mind and would have wanted to make an appearance and speak - even against medical advice.

ZoeCM · 21/04/2025 13:28

Hope he rests in peace, imagine one of the last people you saw was JD Vance.

One of the last people the Queen saw was Liz Truss. Maybe that's what finished her off.

Kardamyli2 · 21/04/2025 13:29

Sad for Catholics I guess. Have to say that as an atheist I've already heard enough Pope/Catholic news today to last me a lifetime.

Poonu · 21/04/2025 13:30

I'm not Christian but I followed him and I think he did great things for the religion, opening it up to more people.

fudgesmummy · 21/04/2025 13:31

@LlynTegid
38 years ago I had just given birth to my first baby, it was the first great- grandchild for my DH’s Nan and she was so excited and looking forward to seeing him.
She was seriously ill and wasn’t expected to live much longer and we all knew she was holding on to see him.
A photo was taken of him, sent away to be developed (no phone cameras in those days!!) and duly sent in the post to her.
She then amazing got better and lived for another 4 years, getting to meet my second baby as well!! ❤️

I'm Catholic too and think that "woke" is a horrible scathing term.
Do you mean you'd rather he was more judgemental? Would rather he was more hell fire and damnation? rather than peace, love and forgiveness? Just say that then.

When I saw him on the news yesterday I said it was a shame that he’s being wheeled out when he’s clearly not at all well. But maybe he knew his time for short and wanted to come out one last time. Hope he rests in peace, imagine one of the last people you saw was JD Vance.

Yes, it’s like when Liz Truss was one of the Queen’s last official visitors 😯

Mrs Vance is not a Catholic.

Isn't she? I'd assumed that's why he converted in the first place.

No, not for a jaunt and he was perfectly conscious throughout. He was the head of the Roman Catholic church in Italy, where the vast majority are practising catholics.

@Yaaaassssssqueeeeeennnnnslay I think it’s likely he would have wanted to - a bit like the Queen, for popes, with the exception of the last one, it’s very much a die on the job, do the work til the last breath kind of gig. I think he was the type to use whatever last energy he had to see in Easter Sunday as a symbol of finishing his mission.

I say that as someone who shares your views on the CC and the majority within.
But to me Francis was the best of a very bad lot. The bar is low, I know, but he at least tried to move the dial away from the dogmatic damnation and cruelty of his predecessors. Was he perfect? Absolutely not. But in this case perfect would be the enemy of any move to even slightly better. But as I said, and agree with you, the bar for good in that organisation is in hell, so I know what change he made would be too little for many people.

ToWhitToWhoo · 21/04/2025 13:49

Very sad to hear this. I'm a total atheist, but I had a lot of respect for him.
