What places in the Uk make you feel that you can breathe again?!

I live in a North East England coastal town. Despite having the beach, I quite regularly have to drive out into the Yorkshire Moors to ground myself again.

I think it may be related to Biophilia however I dont get the same relief from visiting local nature.

OP posts:

Walking along a local footpath and seeing all the apple blossom , hearing the birds tweet etc. it was lovely. The bluebells are just coming out now also.

West Shore, Llandudno.

Conistonhawks · 19/04/2025 20:09

2 places

waking down the canal and paths near us with all the wildlife. We have deer, otters, buzzards, kingfishers and loads more and we do not live in the country. It’s like a little haven of nature.

Coniston copper mines, standing there with all the hills around you and waterfalls is amazing.

HeddaGarbled · 19/04/2025 20:10

Ah, I’d say any beach, unlike you OP. There’s something about seeing and hearing the sea, whatever the weather, I find calming.

Flamingmentalcats · 19/04/2025 20:12

A lovely little seaside town on the East coast. I go there in my head and sit on a certain bench if I need to. Makes me feel so much better

Moglet4 · 19/04/2025 20:14

Tynemouth or St Mary’s lighthouse

GottaWork · 19/04/2025 20:15

I hate this about myself as it sounds like I have made being born by the sea my whole personality but I feel calm when I am near the sea. Most especially if there’s a beach I can go to and breath in the sea air.

I hate being too far inland for too long!

AcquadiP · 19/04/2025 20:16

The East Yorkshire coast. The sea air, the sound of the waves crashing and beautiful sunsets. Bliss.

Overhaul54 · 19/04/2025 20:16

The Isle of Wight. horribly built up now but still feel the pull of my ancestors!

Sussex Downs. Something about short grass on chalk makes me feel happy, plus a nice view.

ClareBlue · 19/04/2025 20:27

Top of Sharp Haw Moor above Skipton, in the sun. Once fell into somewhere between sleep and not sleep listening to the birds and lying in bracken and it was like some transdentle experience. I think the bracken gives off some scent in heat that if you get right into it has a calming effect. I've recreated it since. It needs to be hot and dry, at least 3 miles from any road or person so you can only hear the birds, a climb to get there so you get good oxygen and blood circulation prior to the experience, deep bracken to squash down and lie in, monotone and persistent bird song that you focus on. Deep breathing and away you go.😁

St Agnes in Cornwall and Coral Bay in Cyprus. When I get to either I stand, and feel the weight of the world leave me.

TheJoanCollins · 19/04/2025 20:31

My local beach. A lovely walk down the river path to the sea. So many wading birds to watch. The calming sound of clinking halyards. It’s beautiful and so relaxing. An added bonus is the great pub at the harbour mouth.

Vitrolinsanity · 19/04/2025 20:32

Oops realise Coral Bay not in the UK (although given the expat community it may as well be)

SlB09 · 19/04/2025 20:36

OP where about in the north east are you? Just I also live in NE and go 'home' to North Yorkshire to soak in that feeling when I need to. It's actually really nice to hear someone else does this!
Also the lake district never ever fails either.

Chipsahoy · 19/04/2025 20:38

I agree about the sea. My favourite is Portsoy but only when the tide is in. I love the sound of the stones as the waves draw back and move them. It’s loud as they crash against the rocks and the sea looks almost tropical. It’s Baltic though as it’s Scotland!

ClareBlue · 19/04/2025 20:39

Have just googled bracken and it looks like I was being slowly poisoned by their spores in creating my out of body state, so I'm not recommending people to do it. It was great and I don't think I have lasting issues from it. My goats won't touch it. They know.

Noshowlomo · 19/04/2025 20:41

Tenby. I just love it

Frontroomroomjungle · 19/04/2025 20:42

North Cornwall and the Lake District, specifically Keswick.

phoenixrosehere · 19/04/2025 20:45

The Fife Coastal Path

I’ve been to different coasts in Europe and in the States and nothing has matched it so far. Not sure what it is, but I feel very grounded there.

Latenightreader · 19/04/2025 20:49

Durham, especially arriving by train. It is as if I can breathe deeper and my soul lifts a little.

A really good second hand bookshop - David's in Cambridge, Barter Books in Alnwick, Castle Books in Norwich are three favourites.

EdithStourton · 19/04/2025 20:54

Woodland.
The local estuary when the tide is out, esp on winter evenings.
Swimming in open water (summer only!)

SlB09 · 19/04/2025 20:55

I feel like I need to experience some of these places now!

StrongandNorthern · 19/04/2025 21:00

The Northumberland coast.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 19/04/2025 21:00

I get the feeling at a certain point on my way home, when you leave the built-up town/small city and then it suddenly turns green! It's then sheep and farms for as far as the eye can see. Funnily enough, some of my neighbours have also said the same.

MyIvyGrows · 19/04/2025 21:04

Another East Yorkshire coast fan here. Also the canal towpath near my house - it’s lovely - and Primrose Hill.
