Following the 'what UK places weird you out', what places ground you?

What places in the Uk make you feel that you can breathe again?!

I live in a North East England coastal town. Despite having the beach, I quite regularly have to drive out into the Yorkshire Moors to ground myself again.

I think it may be related to Biophilia however I dont get the same relief from visiting local nature.

Could someone point me in the direction of the original thread OP mentions (places that weird you out)?

Central London - especially Soho, Mayfair, St James’s, Marylebone, Fitzrovia. There are so many people and it’s so busy - and you can jump on a bus or a tube, turn a corner and you’re in a different area. Any problem I have gets lost in the crowd. I only live 3 miles south of the centre but would love to live right in the middle of it all. Also (completely the other end of the spectrum) the New Forest

JandamiHash · 20/04/2025 00:27

Beautiful Nidd Gorge in North Yorkshire

Candles88 · 20/04/2025 00:32

Up high! I love a good viewpoint, there is something so indescribable about sitting watching a sunrise, from anywhere in the world.

Durham, especially arriving by train. It is as if I can breathe deeper and my soul lifts a little.

A really good second hand bookshop - David's in Cambridge, Barter Books in Alnwick, Castle Books in Norwich are three favourites.

If ever you're near Hartlepool there's a great second hand bookshop (sells other vintage stuff etc) called Needful things. It's near the Church that's now a gallery and tourist information centre. Church square. Ds1 loves going when he's home. We live on the coast near Hartlepool.

Where are you @JellieT0tz ? I love the coast, the lakes but also woodland. There's a huge dene near us so we have the best of both.

Seeing the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, especially when coming into the city from the south west. I was born about half a mile away and grew up less than 5 miles away.
Also Calgary beach on the Isle of Mull. Just a beach- no shops or amusements just sheep grazing.

Wallabyone · 20/04/2025 01:13

I live in a pretty, semi-rural place and love it, but I really love central London. Like the poster above, I love the hustle and bustle and feel completely energised after a trip in. Luckily, we’re not too far away.

IAteAllTheChurros · 20/04/2025 01:15

Browsing the shelves in Barter Books is like a little bit of heaven on earth for me.

AlviesMam · 20/04/2025 01:18

The Lake District is my happy place Smile

WilfredsPies · 20/04/2025 01:27

The beach. The sea makes me feel like I can breathe properly. It refreshes me, clears my brain and re-sets me. Any weather. In fact, bad weather is normally more enjoyable because I’m not trying to keep out of the sun and it’s peaceful. I just wrap up warm and take a hot drink.

But not any water. Lakes, streams, rivers etc are nice, but don’t have the same effect at all. It has to be the sea.

RenoDakota · 20/04/2025 19:46

Sheringham, Norfolk. The coastal walk towards Weybourne, and Sheringham Park, especially.

Craftysue · 20/04/2025 19:50

Snowdonia - used to go out of season and walk for miles. Beautiful scenery

Caroparo52 · 20/04/2025 19:52

Three Cliffs Beach Gower.
Anywhere in trees and flowers

Sirzy · 20/04/2025 19:54

Driving just off the m6 to the Lake District I reach a point where I just say “ahhh”
and enjoy the views and start to chill.

LulusMiniEgg · 20/04/2025 19:55

The Lake District brings me such joy, in particular a house we visit on Coniston Water, the garden swoops directly into the lake and being on the water on my paddleboard makes my heart sing like no other place💚

MurdoMunro · 20/04/2025 19:57

Thin places for me too. I find them mostly on the marshes, fresh and saltwater. I like the in-betweenness, time stops.

Planetmonster · 20/04/2025 19:59

Brighton beach. Next to the palace or west pier. I love it.

also am lucky enough to work next to the Thames.

I am very lucky. As soon as I see either of those expanses of water I am calm

Titasaducksarse · 20/04/2025 19:59

Tenby. The view over North beach to the harbour...it's my happy place.

Where I live...there's a path that opens up to a huge field and sea views. I love it.

SwanOfThoseThings · 20/04/2025 20:00

"My" Tesco. Always reassuringly the same.

Tutorpuzzle · 20/04/2025 20:14

I’m not a fan of the heat and light of June/July/August and love just sitting quietly in the cool and stillness of a medieval church (they are dotted about all over the place.) I’d never thought of it as ‘grounding’ before, @JellieT0tz , but you’re right, that’s exactly what it is.

researchers3 · 20/04/2025 20:21

The Dales. I think I prefer the parts that are less green and more remote and bleak.

I feel so happy when I'm driving in those areas - no idea what this says about me!!

Great thread.

ramonaqueenbee · 20/04/2025 20:29

Holkham beach for me....windy and chilly by the sea and hot in the dunes!

Poppymeldrum · 20/04/2025 20:31

Cannock chase
If I'm having one of those im-really-struggling days/weeks,we get in the car and head there
It's just so peaceful and quiet
I try to avoid the black eyed girls though!(joking-ive never seen one)

hazelnutvanillalatte · 20/04/2025 20:35

Chinatown in London. Something about it being so busy, with so many little doorways into unfamiliar shops and all the neon and lanterns and alleyways just makes me feel weirdly comforted.

Soaringskylark · 20/04/2025 20:41

The Northumberland coast, Embleton Bay, Holy Island in the evening when the Tourists have gone and the Seals play in the Bay and Gefrin (Yeavering).

The latter was the 7th Century summer residence of Yeavering’s Anglo Saxon Kings and Queens. Standing looking over it in the late evening sunshine you can feel them still there. Definitely a thin place.
