I don't feel like using Ocado again

Gardenservant · 18/04/2025 21:39

Just read an interview with Justine Roberts, founder of MN in which she said that
Ocado – who had been excited about a partnership – abruptly pulled out, citing Mumsnet’s ‘hateful political views’ because she was standing up for women's rights to single sex spaces. I was just about to put in an order with Ocado which I use occasionally - they stock an item which is difficult to obtain elsewhere, but now I don't feel like ordering from them again. Do others feel that their behaviour was out of order?

I don’t believe trans women are women. But no, I won’t stop using Ocado.

TeenLifeMum · 18/04/2025 21:43

I don’t agree with Ocado but I do believe they have a right to a view that differs from mine.

JockTamsonsBairns · 18/04/2025 21:45

We've had several threads about this today.
I'm happy to continue to use Ocado, but that definitely won't be popular with the MN hive mind.

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 18/04/2025 21:46

Apparently they’ve apologised and blamed a temp.

GiroJim100 · 18/04/2025 21:47

I’m sure you could find things you disagree with about people associated with any large organisation. I really would get het up about it if I were you.

Phunkychicken · 18/04/2025 21:49

I emailed them to cancel my smart pass about this very issue, about 2 guess before my last delivery from them.

They would need to grovel and give MN a V big apology (and handsome remuneration) before I'd think of using them again.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/04/2025 22:00

This is the third thread. I wish we could be a bit better organised.

HardyKoala · 18/04/2025 22:02

I mean, do Ocado have the ‘right to a view’? Have they polled and discussed said view with all the shareholders and workers? If not, I’d suggest brands stay the fuck away from expressing political views. Especially if they don’t know what they’re on about

massiveMEflareup · 18/04/2025 22:03

I use Ocado, I won’t be stopping over this , their political views have nothing to do with the service they offer. I’ll judge them by what they do not what they have an opinion on that is really nothing to do with them .

Firenzeflower · 18/04/2025 22:04

If they don’t value women I won’t use them. I have never gone back to buying from Body Shop.

F**k em

Careful, MN hasn’t done any of that prior to Justine Roberts expressing political views on behalf of MN.

SnailInMyGingerBeer · 18/04/2025 22:09

I don't use Ocado, but I have been known to occasionally use Waitrose. I think Ocado is linked with them too? Or am I wrong ?

GruffaIo · 18/04/2025 22:16

TeenLifeMum · 18/04/2025 21:43

I don’t agree with Ocado but I do believe they have a right to a view that differs from mine.

But Ocado didn't believe that Mumsnet had a right to a view that differed from theirs. That lack of principle is why they shouldn't be used again.

Ocado aren’t morally obligated to enter into a partnership with MN. They can refuse for whatever reason they want.

Gardenservant · 18/04/2025 22:25

They are linked to M&S not Waitrose. I support Waitrose because of their record on animal welfare.

That's obviously right, but individuals are equally entitled to form an opinion on whether they want to spend money with Ocado based on the reason why they didn't enter into the partnership with Mumsnet, ie. because of its alleged "hateful political views".

No one has said they’re not. I’m not going to boycott Ocado, others are free to make their own choices,

Though I suppose arguably the problem is Ocado are not accepting MN has a right to a view that differs from theirs.

I like Ocado but I agree with you there needs to be space for alternative views.

Edited

Except she didn't.

All she did was make MN a place where people could express gender critical views without fear of retaliation or being shut down.

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 18/04/2025 22:50

Agreed. They’re about to lose £1.2k+ a month from me

Flossflower · 18/04/2025 22:53

Have you seen the Waitrose pride bag. It contains the trans flag.
I won’t be stopping shopping at Ocado,

True, but big organisations shouldn’t be making business decisions based on the political views of some people that happen to work there.

Sesma · 18/04/2025 22:55

Just shop occasionally with them to stock up on your item, I would never be loyal to just one online supermarket anyway.

WilfredsPies · 18/04/2025 23:18

They’ve apologised and blamed a temporary contractor who is no longer with them. That has made me lose even more respect for them.

Barclays were named as blanking MN as well.

She has been politically active using the MN name and logo for years.

She’s been in the Telegraph, Times, and Daily Mail for a decade on the gender issue. And not as just Ms Roberts, but “Justine Roberts, founder of Mumsnet” even some of the headlines go “Founder of Mumsnet…”
