To think protesting the Trump visit would be really selfish?

I actively despise Trump, but AIBU to think sabotaging what will be quite an expensive state visit by protesting would be for the good of the protestor’s reputation/conscience rather than actually achieve anything?

Surely one should do things for the good of one's conscience? All that's needed for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing

Do protests achieve anything? I'm never sure. But how else do we raise our voices against what we believe to be wrong?

MyHipHurty · 18/04/2025 18:02

Time to dust off inflatable baby trump

PermanentTemporary · 18/04/2025 18:04

The man loves attention. Protesting is attention in his mind. I'd rather we ignored it as much as possible.

SherlockHolmes · 18/04/2025 18:07

The man's an absolute cunt. Protest your arse off I say.

Maitri108 · 18/04/2025 18:09

The man is a piece of walking excrement. He deserves everything we throw at him.

LadyNairne · 18/04/2025 18:10

He’ll be disappointed if there aren’t any protestors

Trump delights in causing division, opposition and anger. It’s his modus operandi

With what result bar sabotaging any soft benefits of the visit?

No. The right to protest is a fundamental part of free speech.

Bush was also protested. Trump can suck it up. I hope the protests are huge and The Orange Man’s ego is damaged

I didn’t suggest banning the protests.

Don’t sabotage and try not to cause too much disruption. However I see ni reason not to protest. I’d prefer maybe lining the streets but turning back to the motorcade.
Make policing as easy as possible - it will be massive anyway.

There is someone in a brutal prison which the administration admit should not be there and they are paying to keep there. Yet nothing can be done say the Trump administration.

This is just the most recent thing that comes to my mind from a long line of many.

I’m British and don’t feel safe thar I would be able to enter the US to visit relatives, they agree. This is due to the way that rules are being randomly enforced and having been sent social media denigrating This post might even add to it, but I’m going to post. There is an uncle that can’t travel so I won’t see for next few years.

OneAmpleCoralAnt · 18/04/2025 18:37

Not sure what the soft benefits are? On the flip side if I was living in the US right now I’d probably think it was selfish to keep quiet for soft benefits 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ineffable23 · 18/04/2025 18:39

I mean I think the US government has been doing a remarkable number of pretty totalitarian-esque things recently and it's really important to show that actually people don't think that behaving like that is acceptable. Might have to get my placards out for it.

There are no benefits of this visit. Don’t kid yourself. We can all see it for the blatant puff piece that it is.

I have to be honest I read that twice and still have no idea what it means?

I guarantee no regressive regime was ever got rid of by people saying "don't make too much fuss".

Which regime (in another country) was ousted by protesting here?

Because you need your voice heard. People need to unite to show their opinion.

It's clear you're of the opinion that sitting back and doing nothing is preferable.

should have quoted OP who wanted to understand my post
Sorry not clear

para 1 think we should be bc able to peacefully protest. Rather than slogans suggested lining the streets and turning back on Trump motorcade

para 2 referring to the case of Ábrego García

para 4 I don’t feel safe visiting relatives due to the way foreign travellers have treated at the border and my relatives agree. Part of the things looked at is social media so by posting this it would make it more likely I’d have trouble trying to enter Others also worried

A person holds a sign with a picture of Kilmar Ábrego García

Kilmar Ábrego García: Who is the man deported from Maryland to El Salvador? - BBC News

Officials in the US and El Salvador have been unwilling to return the man home, sparking a legal battle.
