To ask if anyone wore an 'alternative' wedding dress/outfit?

I'm mid 30s and no offense to those who did but I have zero interest in wearing a highly elaborate, white traditional wedding dress complete with train and veil.
I'm not even bothered about wearing white! Would probably spend around £50 max on it.

Just wondering if anyone else wore something different?

Also, what reaction did you get from guests? I've never been to a wedding where the bride deviated from the traditional wedding gown, and I admit I'm worried about it a little.

If I ever get married again, I have got numerous outfits in my wardrobe already that I would just revamp and recycle. I would not be wearing anything out of the ordinary.
The whole wedding industry is just a complete con in my opinion and I say this is somebody who spent 25 grand on their first wedding in 2002 and didn’t enjoy a single moment of it

Interesting post op.

I went to a wedding where the bride wore cords and a nice top. It was a registry office. Lovely couple, brilliant wedding and great marriage.

I think it depends on the setting. Walking down a church aisle in something very unconventional is likely to draw more comments than anywhere else, I think.

But it’s more important for you to feel good about yourself.

Coronationchicken34 · 18/04/2025 17:07

Thank you!
Not intending to marry in a church either, I should've said that.
Will see what's out there.

I wore a cream coloured silk suit - skirt and jacket. I didn't want to wear a traditional wedding dress. No adverse comments even from my Mum who was not impressed that we married in a registry office. I'm very happy with what I wore.

Newnameshoos · 18/04/2025 17:12

I got a lacy knee length dress in my favourite colour for mine. A work friend had a white trousers suit for hers. We were both 'older brides' and didn't want the whole fuss and expense of big white frock etc.
You do you! Have a lovely day when it comes.

PrincessofWells · 18/04/2025 17:13

I wore a burgundy velvet long sleeved off the shoulder full length gown.

Pascha · 18/04/2025 17:14

I had a red dress but it was definitely wedding style.

I wore a burgundy velvet long sleeved off the shoulder full length gown.

This sounds amazing!
I wore a fairly traditional cream dress with beading on the bodice. It looked nice, but was really uncomfortable and I had red marks when I took it off. And my shoes pinched. 🙄

I also had a tiara and an updo, which makes me cringe now but it was a v long time ago!

DoNoTakeNo · 18/04/2025 17:18

Turquoise, homemade with fabric from John Lewis. Felt wonderful. Do exactly as you want & have an amazing day 🌺

JoyousEagle · 18/04/2025 17:19

I wore a green knee length dress. But it was a small wedding in a registry office followed by lunch in the local pub so I don’t think anyone was expecting a big white dress.

If I’d had a big wedding, I really like the idea of a white jumpsuit (Carina on station 19 wore a nice one if anyone saw that)

Iamaverysillyperson · 18/04/2025 17:19

I wore a dress from a 'hippy' shop in Glastonbury.
Cost £20.
No-one batted an eyelid and I looked great!

I wore a burgundy velvet long sleeved off the shoulder full length gown.

Sounds fantastic!

SwedishEdith · 18/04/2025 17:21

There's an advert on TV atm reminding people to take photo ID to vote. The bride in that looks really nice. She is in white but it's just a short fitted dress with matching jacket.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/04/2025 17:21

Dark cream wide leg trousers and a longline matching jacket here. With silver heels

Dahliasrule · 18/04/2025 17:22

Married in the hippy era so wore a white wool slim fitting full length dress that mum crocheted for me. (With lining underneath for modesty!) Married in church. Going away dress same pattern, mini length in gold wool.

ThatShyRoseViper · 18/04/2025 17:23

I wore black both times. The outfits are probably the only things I still feel 100% on, no regrets.

Wear exactly what you want, it’s your day and it should reflect you.

Dahliasrule · 18/04/2025 17:23

Just to add wool as it was a January wedding!

Cyclistmumgrandma · 18/04/2025 17:29

I got married in a grey pinstripe skirt suit with a high necked white blouse. It was bought from a chain store and wasn't expensive. I was very happy with it!

Intelligentzombie · 18/04/2025 17:58

I got married in an ankle length gold & black lace dress and had 'black' roses. Bridesmaids were also in black.

It was a small registry office wedding and guests weren't at all surprised by the colours.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 18/04/2025 18:00

I got married in a lovely hemp coloured trouser suit. I as 26 and our guests might have been surprised but didn't say so.

SpanThatWorld · 18/04/2025 18:06

My friend and I made my dress. We sewed a fairly simple summer dress out of a stunning piece of fuchsia and emerald Indian silk.

IlovetoKnitandRead · 18/04/2025 18:14

I had a lovely jersey Seasalt dress in blue with white flowers
Money was tight and I needed a dress i could re-wear often. I still wear it now 6 years later.

EmotionallyWeird · 18/04/2025 18:14

I didn't, but I really wish I had sometimes. I was quite young when I got married, had only been to one wedding of someone of my generation before, and it just never occurred to me not to wear "a wedding dress." But since then I have seen several alternatives I would probably have liked more. If I had my time again, I might well have stuck with cream or some kind of very light golden brown, but I would rather have worn either a 20s-style straight dress or some kind of suit. I know two people who got married in red dresses and looked fabulous.
