To ask if anyone wore an 'alternative' wedding dress/outfit?

I'm mid 30s and no offense to those who did but I have zero interest in wearing a highly elaborate, white traditional wedding dress complete with train and veil.
I'm not even bothered about wearing white! Would probably spend around £50 max on it.

Just wondering if anyone else wore something different?

I wore a pale blue satin sleeveless shift dress (knee length) with tiny white leaf and stem embroidery all over it. £35 from Etam in 1998. Worn with white stockings and flat court shoes, as I could never wear heels. Registry Office wedding.

I wore a Spanish style matador jacket and bias cut skirt suit in navy with thin red stripes. This was paired with black fishnet tights and red heels. And red lipstick to finish.
I felt amazing! Wonderful wedding.

Lucycantdance.com. A little more than 50 quid but might give you some ideas. 😄

Wakemeupbe4yougogo · 18/04/2025 18:24

We got married in a register office, and I had a 3 month old baby - there's no way in hell I was going for a meringue! I wore a cream silk camisole with a pleated cream silk maxi skirt, and a soft blush pink jacket with pearl buttons down it. My Mum is a florist and insisted I had a bouquet and she made me a massive 90s floral headband in the same Hmm but looking back I'm glad she did as I really didn't look that bridal.

I wore a very plain linen wrap dress (not white or cream) and felt lovely in it.

Wear what you want to wear. Invite only who you like, and don’t feel pushed into doing what other people want you to do. It’s your wedding- if you don’t enjoy the day, what’s the point?

Minglingpringle · 18/04/2025 18:24

Doesn’t matter whether anybody else has or not! Just wear what you like. Style your wedding however you want. There are so many different ways of doing it now, nobody will care. It’s not like we’re living in the 19th century. Although in the 19th century weddings were actually a lot simpler and humbler as it happens. And in fact my own mother got married in a grey suit in the 1950s.

I had a semi-traditional style with the tulle underskirts etc… except it was knee length - and black.
black kitten heels and a black veil with diamanté sparkles which matched the fabric of the dress.
Looking back now I’m old, I think I looked amazing 😂

I wore a burgundy velvet long sleeved off the shoulder full length gown.

That sounds gorgeous!

Turquoise, homemade with fabric from John Lewis. Felt wonderful. Do exactly as you want & have an amazing day 🌺

Nice 🤩

I wore a green knee length dress. But it was a small wedding in a registry office followed by lunch in the local pub so I don’t think anyone was expecting a big white dress.

If I’d had a big wedding, I really like the idea of a white jumpsuit (Carina on station 19 wore a nice one if anyone saw that)

I saw that… she looked amazing

I wore a dress from a 'hippy' shop in Glastonbury.
Cost £20.
No-one batted an eyelid and I looked great!

I bet you did! Mine didn’t cost much more than that 😂

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 18/04/2025 18:30

I wore a long silvery - lilac evening dress with a fish tail. It was fabulous. 25 years ago next week.

Married in the hippy era so wore a white wool slim fitting full length dress that mum crocheted for me. (With lining underneath for modesty!) Married in church. Going away dress same pattern, mini length in gold wool.

I love crochet clothes they sound gorgeous

Ponderingwindow · 18/04/2025 18:34

Blue evening gown

FlippyKiYayFlippyFlipper · 18/04/2025 18:36

Bright teal 50s style silk dress. Didn’t give a fuck what anyone thought. I loved it.

RedRosie · 18/04/2025 18:37

It was a long time ago don't ask but I wore a dark blue silk outfit - long slim skirt, long slim-fit top with a Nehru collar - for our small registry office wedding. I wouldn't wear it now (mostly because I've realised how very cruel silk is) but it did look nice.

Wear what you like!

ginasevern · 18/04/2025 18:38

I wore an all black, satin maxi dress, a floppy purple hat and carried a bouquet of wild flowers. It was a registry office wedding in 1977.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/04/2025 18:40

Ooh your outfits sound amazing! Great ideas here op. If my partner has his way and gets me to agree to getting married again at some point - I fancy a short dress, not sure of colour - this Vivienne Westwood is right up my street.

Timeforatincture · 18/04/2025 18:40

I tried on a traditional dress in a local boutique. Laughed so hard I was close to widdling on the frock which would have been embarrassing. I think the proprietor was rather offended!

So bought a pattern and several metres of pea green silk; got a local dressmaker to make it- loved it! Wore with a headdress made of leaves and carried a leaf bouquet.

APurpleSquirrel · 18/04/2025 18:41

I wore a rust red/bronze dress, it was wedding dress style, but we got married in a country house rather than a church.

Aozora13 · 18/04/2025 18:41

I wore a purple 50s style swing dress. My friend got married in a gold beaded jumpsuit and looked incredible.

capybaraqueen · 18/04/2025 18:50

I wore a beautiful sheath midi length cocktail dress from Karen millen with a fur stole. I've since worn the dress to many other back tie style events!

We eloped to Vegas and a meringue wouldn't have suited us. So we had no guests to judge! Loved the dress and would wear it again even now.

sommerjade · 18/04/2025 18:58

One good friend wore a dark red proper strapless brides dress & looked great; and a cousin’s wife to be wore a long silver velvet dress when she married.

Peony1897 · 18/04/2025 19:07

I’m getting married at some point (done the official bit but I mean the ceremony - I want my celebration!). I would like to find some kind of floral suit. A bit like this but less synthetic/‘cheap’ looking:

JudasTree · 18/04/2025 19:15

I wore a sundress and sandals, and DH bought me a bouquet from the flower stall outside.
