What are your thoughts on Raw milk?

With the current hot topic of ultra-processed food, and trying to reduce this. Mainly for healthy reasons. I am considering switching to raw milk.
Upon googling lots of advice why not to do this, especially for children.
I have seen that it can have lots of health benefits if sourced from a reputable raw milk farmer.

Why are half the people on here so condescending and pretentious? 😂

Or maybe we just have basic common sense?

ByLemonFish · 17/04/2025 14:43

We've been drinking raw organic milk from local farm for about 8 months now, delicious.

LuckyShark · 17/04/2025 14:43

I had TB a few years ago.
We traced it back and believe i must have caught it when I drank raw milk as a child at a friend's farm.

100% do not recommend contacting TB

We were vaccinated in P6 here and I was told I didnt need it, so I was infected before age 10. It seems to be the only way I could have caught it.

derxa · 17/04/2025 14:44

I drank it for over 25 years. Farming family

Why do you think that raw milk is better than pasteurisation? It’s a major scientific discovery that has saved countless lives and even taught in schools (GCSE history)

MissDoubleU · 17/04/2025 14:49

Hey don’t half arse it, why not switch to raw chicken too? Avoid all that ghastly processing.

AlwaysFreezing · 17/04/2025 14:50

10 cells of VTEC E. coli are enough to kill you or leave you on dialysis for life.

Dhxusksgxuks · 17/04/2025 14:50

What are the supposed health benefits? It seems to me all you’re doing is risking exposure to the very real risk of bacteria for no obvious benefit.

If you’re generally healthy and well and you are confident in the hygeine practices and animal husbandry of the farmer you plan to buy from then it’s your business if you want to drink it. But definitely don’t give it to children and don’t give it to guests unless you’ve told them it’s raw so they can decide if it’s safe for them.

Definitely not condescending and pretentious to be moving to raw milk for the health benefits...

Why are half the posters so dense when it comes to basic education on pasteurised milk? You crack on!

Great suggestion. I have some raw, uncooked prawns in the fridge, fancy sharing them with me? 🤣

SoSoLong · 17/04/2025 14:57

I grew up on unpasteurised milk, but we'd always boil it, which pretty much kills bacteria in the same way as pasteurisation. If you mean fresh raw milk straight from the cow, then no.

icouldholditwithacobweb · 17/04/2025 14:58

YANBU OP, I get raw milk unhomogenised milk from a local farm and have yet to experience any issues. I prefer it for the health benefits too. It's not some mad gamble with your health if you're getting it from a reputable farmer whose cattle are well cared for and who have a trusted reputation, no idea why people on here are being so hysterical about it.

TiredArse · 17/04/2025 14:58

Have you ever met a cow? They are routinely covered in shit.

ManyATrueWord · 17/04/2025 14:59

Raw milk killed an awful lot of people. You'd be a fool to start drinking it now

CarrotParrot · 17/04/2025 14:59

Just about to reply, "Have you ever seen the state of a cow?" but glad to see @TiredArse got in there first.

MikeRafone · 17/04/2025 15:00

Just stop drinking milk from cows

if it has to be treated to be safe that might be an indication not to use it as a food source

Tbf that statement could equally be applied to chicken.

Most people have more sense than to drink nut milk made somewhere that doesn't make sure the nuts aren't covered in shit and bacteria before selling it, either.

Not all of them, mind.

17to35 · 17/04/2025 15:05

DH drank unpasteurised raw milk as a child (family farm). Had BCG. In America was found to have latent TB and his employer wanted that treated as a condition of employment. It didn’t seem such a good idea then. Learn from the mistakes of others.

Loads of food has to be treated before it's safe to eat.

Penguinmouse · 17/04/2025 15:06

Switch to raw milk and enjoy your listeria

MaggieBsBoat · 17/04/2025 15:07

Just give up cow milk instead there's no need for it then you don't have this worry.

This. X 1000

Your post sounds like you thought that pasteurised milk was UPF. I’ve seen people in the comments sections on SM from the US say that “pasteurisation is boiling to kill harmful bacteria” is misinformation but I guess they’ve grown up with the attitude that it didn’t hurt anyone they know so must be a conspiracy of some sort. I’m not saying that this is you but I have definitely seen people ask if an ingredient says “pasteurised” then does that mean UPF.
