So shared fence with neighbour. Needs repair and agreed to split cost. How do you decide who gets the good side? Should there be a difference in cost that reflects this?

Who owns it currently?

Is it definitely shared? It's usually one or the other although you can reach agreement. I assume you see the best side as the one without the struts/supports? This can be the best side if you enjoy your garden and like to have climbing plants and lighting, just a mention.

If all else toss a coin

My fences are shared. If its being repaired rather than replaced then surely it stays with whoever has the good or bad side already? I don't think costs should differ depending on who has which side

I checked deeds and it doesn't indicate ownership. The new fence we are wanting has gravel boards and posts which would be quite obvious in terms of good/bad side.

who's organising the new fence?

Could it be made that both sides are made good? may increase the cost but the offer of a higher price may either make them say nah you have the good side or yay will pay more?

Does the neighbour agree to semi financing it? Do they care where the posts go? I think that sometimes indicates ownership, particularly if there are no little T marks on the deeds. If you organise repairs, I believe this means the responsibility is now yours forever more.
