Sunbed Shock

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 17:09

I’ve been really stupid and gone on the sunbed for twenty minutes and the burns I’ve got - I’ve never seen skin as red. I’ve got like indents to my skin as though I’ve woken to stretch marks on my chest. Will these disappear? I’m in agony. I’ve never burnt and so didn’t know it could cause this kind of pain. I’m shaking shivering. I did this yesterday. Can someone reassure my health anxiety that these indents will all calm down?

Last i heard the receptionists at Hospitals are not nurses, they're admin

WinterBones · 17/04/2025 19:29

The cling film is actually NHS medical advise.

SansaStark90 · 17/04/2025 19:29

faerietales · 17/04/2025 19:22

This isn't just a minor sunburn though, this is 2nd degree burns to over 80% of her body.

I don’t understand why people are being even meaner than before. I’ve had a really bad week to be honest. Yes self inflicted. But I’m really paying the price.

I’ve got my a&e wristband that was hurting being on! Why on earth would I make this up? And thank you - I already feel stupid enough, now I should know the ph levels of tomatoes.

YOU keep saying I’ve got second degree burns. I went to a doctor. To be assessed. And sorry but why is it my fault that I’m too polite to say sorry I couldn’t even tell it was my name being called and I don’t understand anything you are saying.

OP why don't you try an online GP consultation service?

AngelicKaty · 17/04/2025 19:32

Woodburnerisout · 17/04/2025 19:22

Jeez, more sensible than going to A&E and actually getting properly assessed??

I didn't say I would do it, but I noticed someone saying that a PP had suggested it and I thought "surely not", so I went and googled it and to my astonishment several hits came up recommending it!
I've had severe sunburn, resulting in sunstroke, as OP describes, and I felt very poorly for 36 hours. I lay in a very tepid bath to bring my temperature down whilst sipping water. I took some paracetamol and got into bed, lay there shivering under a duvet in summer(!) but eventually managed to drop off to sleep (DH kept a close eye on me). The shivering stopped within 2 days and although I was bright scarlet for a week, my skin didn't blister.

Gettingacoffee · 17/04/2025 19:32

But in the actual sun have never burned and go from porcelain Celtic skin to people have spoken Greek to me thinking I’m local as I have black hair and tanned that deep.

Porcelain Celtic skin burns OP. It’s a defining factor really.

You can have pale skin without it being porcelain, celtic-type though? I suspect that’s you.

I really hope you feel better soon.
Medical attention again sounds like a good idea.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 17/04/2025 19:33

A bath of tomatoes? More like a shiver of sharks jumping in the distance..

SansaStark90 · 17/04/2025 19:33

CheeseAndHamToastieAndCrisps · 17/04/2025 19:23

You don’t put anything on a burn! Other than to wrap it in cling film and attend a&e. FFS!

I’m also having my doubts now..

So I should have wrapped my whole body in cling film?? And waddled into a&e

Better idea than bathing in tomatoes

Gettingacoffee · 17/04/2025 19:36

Not being able to understand doctors, and they not being able to understand you, is a real problem. I’ve had that experience and it’s very difficult.

CheeseAndHamToastieAndCrisps · 17/04/2025 19:36

faerietales · 17/04/2025 19:26

You shouldn't wrap it in clingfilm either 😬

Yes you should. I’ve worked in burns and a&e.

I'm also not the only one who has made these comments so I'm not really sure why you keep sniping at me but ignoring everyone else.

You're probably not interested in hearing it, but you need to go back to hospital and push for treatment. You are at real risk of dehydration and becoming incredibly sick. People are concerned about what you're posting as you sound very unwell.

Thank you, sorry but if I’d caused a fuss I’d have been stereotyped and labelled. You can’t win. Of course I didn’t want to be rude but what could I do. Force him to help me. I started tearing up as I am in an awful lot of pain.

I don't think OP wrapping her entire body in clingfilm is a good idea...

I live in a hot country and so know that eating tomatoes gives very slight sun protection. But slight as in still needing SPF.

I have never heard of bathing in them though.

Nor had I until I googled it, which I was prompted to do by this thread because I just couldn't believe it could be true. It's odd how there are people on here arguing about it when they're all using devices connected to the internet and could simply do the same search I did. 🤔

No, you wrap what you can. Or at least do the running water part. Good first aid makes a real difference. Then the size and depth of the burn and subsequent treatment gets assessed in a&e.

Bathing in tomatoes is bloody pointless though. As is putting on toothpaste, butter and anything else that gets suggested on these type of threads. It makes me despair.

WinterBones · 17/04/2025 19:41

Tomatoes is a home remedy for a minor sunburn, it isn't something that should be deployed for serious burns from a sun bed.

Bathing in them will do nothing.

NO actual NHS medic would advise it, the receptionist needs reporting.

Someone even suggested oil earlier on!

I once burnt my hand cooking roast potatoes as soon as I arrived in an and e they clingfilmed it - it stopped it hurting, ironically another woman rocked up 10 mins later having done exactly the same.

if you’re still feeling ill / shaky id def go back - have you drink lots today ? My brother who burnt his hand years ago was told to drink cream as the soluble fats could help - no idea if that’s current guidance ?

I’m not singling you out, it’s just you keep saying I have second degree burns and I don’t know what I have as I wasn’t assessed. It is making me tear up being mean, I’ve done something stupid and the pain is enormous. As I was waiting to be seen a woman was checking on me as she said she could see I was really struggling. It’s been a bad experience.

I understand that, but you need to go back and keep pushing for help. You are at real risk of shock and dehydration if you don't get proper medical attention. Lying on a sunbed for 20 minutes is really, really serious.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 17/04/2025 19:43

I’d forgotten that it is a bank holiday weekend, so no GP access. Given you are still shivering and feeling cold (when it isn’t) please please go back to A&E.

You do need proper treatment to prevent complications.

everyone else, please go a bit easy, it is hard to think straight and advocate for yourself when you are in severe pain and you body is, possible, in shock.

ChoccieCornflake · 17/04/2025 19:44

Please please go back to A&E. This is not a minor thing, this is a risk of serious harm thing
