Sunbed Shock

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 17:09

I’ve been really stupid and gone on the sunbed for twenty minutes and the burns I’ve got - I’ve never seen skin as red. I’ve got like indents to my skin as though I’ve woken to stretch marks on my chest. Will these disappear? I’m in agony. I’ve never burnt and so didn’t know it could cause this kind of pain. I’m shaking shivering. I did this yesterday. Can someone reassure my health anxiety that these indents will all calm down?

Sounds like you could have sunstroke. Is your heart rate okay? Drink plenty of water today and if you feel very unwell seek medical advice.

way2serious · 16/04/2025 17:14

How did the staff at the salon allow you to do 20 minutes for your first time! You should always build up very gradually. 20 minutes is a long time on a sun bed!
it sounds as though you may have ‘sun stroke’ and need to treat yourself accordingly. Lots of fluids, aloe Vera type cream to soothe the burning, cool baths or showers, etc

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/04/2025 17:14

By "sunbed" do you mean the UV light ( or whatever they are ) rather than out in the sun.
Was this a salon or a sunbed at home or a friends house?

I think you need to treat yourself skin as you would a burn so tepid water to begin the cooling and healing.
If it was a salon did they give you any advice on post care?@

clinellwipe · 16/04/2025 17:15

I didn’t know twenty minutes was even legal (assuming you were in a tanning salon and not using a home one). Agree that it sounds like sunstroke … stay hydrated and make sure you’re weeing as normal. Go to ED if you have a fever or high heart rate etc

Waterlilysunset · 16/04/2025 17:16

20 mins bloody hell. I don’t agree with them but from historical use years ago you start at 3 mins

Blackdow · 16/04/2025 17:19

You’re only meant to be in there for a few minutes. Who allowed you to do 20 minutes?
You’ve spent the equivalent of 4 or 5 hours in direct, strong sunlight without any skin protection. You will be burnt.

Do you feel unwell? Any sickness?

Drinks plenty of water or isotonic drinks, and I’d suggest actually just getting into a tepid/cool shower and staying in there. Take paracetamol.

Hollietree · 16/04/2025 17:19

If you are shaking I would worry that your body has gone into shock. I would call 111 for advice.

ScarletWitchM · 16/04/2025 17:19

Even when I used to use sunbeds when I was younger and was an experienced user (& I have olive skin & tan well) I would never ever do 20mins. 8-10 mins was the max I would do and most of the time I did about 5-6 mins. Did the salon ask you about your experience on summers and your skin type etc? They should do this and advise you how long to use for and what creams to use etc

Amba1998 · 16/04/2025 17:19

20 mins??? Jeez 9 mins is considered hardcore

Watermill · 16/04/2025 17:21

I can’t believe you were allowed 20 minutes!?

I think you should seek medical advice.

KimberleyClark · 16/04/2025 17:23

These things need banning.

nomas · 16/04/2025 17:23

Is this sunbed in your house?

Blackdow · 16/04/2025 17:23

Are you home alone? Maybe ignore my last post and call 111 to get their advice!

paddyclampster · 16/04/2025 17:24

If it was yesterday, you’re probably over the worst. Plenty of water and aftersun! And never go on them again!

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 17:29

I thought I’d be over the worst as in I didn’t think it would swell anymore. But the indents and little white dots are appearing. Think it’s going to blister. Im in agony. Feel dreadful. And i have no one to blame but myself. I went to a sunbed shop. But it’s my own fault as I used to tan very easily in the sun, I thought 20 minutes was standard. The young girl was probably 20 and wasn’t paying attention to me. Dumb dumb award of the year, goes to…..me.

Op please get yourself to hospital or the gp now and get these burns checked by someone with medical training. It's impossible to know from your description how deep they are but they sound incredibly painful and covering a large area. They really need to be cooled and dressed.

WonderingWanda · 16/04/2025 17:36

From the NHS....when to seek medical advice:

Large burns bigger than the size of the affected person's hand
Deep burns of any size that cause white or charred skinburns on the face, neck, hands, feet, any joints, or genitals
All chemical and electrical burns
Any other injuries that need treating
Any signs of shock – symptoms include cold, clammy skin, sweating, rapid, shallow breathing, and weakness or dizziness

Simonjt · 16/04/2025 17:38

Personally I’d be phoning the non-emergency nhs number, you likely have sunstroke, blistered skin is at risk of infection and it can also cause dehydration.

Wexone · 16/04/2025 17:38

Sorry the girl allowed you to use it for 20 mins? - i have used sunbeds before and there is no way they would have let you use it for 20 mins, even more so if its your 1st time use, you are suppose to start a couple of, 2 or 3 mins and build up.I you burn at all they don't allow you to use it . Get yourself to a doc

Blackdow · 16/04/2025 17:39

Where did you get the 20 minute standard time figure from? Was it someone in the shop?
You need to speak to that shop and tell them that they allowed a new user to go in for 20 minutes, that you didnt know what you were doing so relied on them to keep you safe but they allowed it and and now look at what’s happened.

You are going to blister. You’ve properly burned yourself, over a large portion of your body. Have you taken painkillers and hydrated? Keep drinking water.

But, it might be best to get checked.

Hoppinggreen · 16/04/2025 17:40

I am usually a take 2 paracetamol, drink water and have a nap kind of person but I think needs looking at OP
Tanning beds are a bad idea anyway and you have spend far too much time on one, you basically have sunstroke

Summertimeblahness · 16/04/2025 17:40

You need to get that looked at ASAP.

The company should be very concerned about the receptionist so disinterested and allowing this to happen.

Do you scar from blistering? I am a worrier and I’ve never even had a little sunburn. I thought I would have blistered by now if I was going to? Clearly, I don’t know what I’m on about re tanning and burning 🤦🏻‍♀️

You really need to seek immediate medical advice. While you’ve been incredibly stupid, the sunbed place should be shut down. This is absolutely negligent.

mummytoonetryingfortwo · 16/04/2025 17:41

why would you sit in there for 20 minutes???? Aside from going in one at all, you’re not meant to use them for that long!
