Sunbed Shock

SansaStark90 · 16/04/2025 17:09

I’ve been really stupid and gone on the sunbed for twenty minutes and the burns I’ve got - I’ve never seen skin as red. I’ve got like indents to my skin as though I’ve woken to stretch marks on my chest. Will these disappear? I’m in agony. I’ve never burnt and so didn’t know it could cause this kind of pain. I’m shaking shivering. I did this yesterday. Can someone reassure my health anxiety that these indents will all calm down?

No point being critical now people it's done. Just make sure you go to the hospital. And keep someone with you if you are at home. Burns are serious and shouldn't be taken lightly. Ps report the tanning salon to trading standards!!!!

Oh you poor thing. You have to get medical help - and fast. Call 111 for advice. I have been going to the sunbeds for years and I go on 16mins a time about 3 or 4 times a week. For you to have been allowed to go on for 20mins for your 1st time is negligent on the Salon. Their staff should be trained to know this sort of thing. First & foremost though, is for you to get medical help. Please do this @SansaStark90.

Why have you been going to sunbeds for years??? My SIL as a young woman used to hire sunbeds to the house, and she'd be permanently mahogany. She got skin cancer, grade 4. That is one hell of a lot of time on sunbeds. You're mad!

@SansaStark90 please see a medical professional and get that checked out. Take my advice and avoid sunbeds!! I used them a bit in my youth but I never would go near the things now!

That salon needs reporting to Trading Standards but that's for later!! Take photos as evidence if you can.

Bikergran · 16/04/2025 18:05

I would phone 111 and ask for advice.

Neemie · 16/04/2025 18:06

You could get it seen to, but you are going to be very uncomfortable sitting in one of those hard plastic hospital waiting room chairs for hours. If you are really worried, a pharmacy might offer you some advice or sell you some cream for it.

Muffinmam · 16/04/2025 18:07

I’ve actually been so badly sunburnt I blistered. They were massive. They were filled with clear fluid and I leaked yellow fluid, blood and pus. My arms swelled so much I couldn’t wear clothes and walked around the house wearing a towel fixed together with a clothes peg.

I’ve also had the symptoms of sun stroke before. I was passing out in the shower. Everything slowly went black until I couldn’t see at all.

Both times were from getting sunburnt on the same beach. I never went to hospital.

The blisters come up pretty quickly. I’m talking within a couple of hours after you realise you’re really badly burnt.

XWKD · 16/04/2025 18:07

After this is over, please don't use a sun-bed again. They wreck your skin.

Do you not care about skin cancer?

I know this isn't helpful, but why does anyone use sun beds any more? Self tanning lotions are so good these days, that I don't know why anyone would risk sun beds?

They like the look of skin cancer and premature skin aging?

JackieDaytonaLuckyBrews · 16/04/2025 18:09

Fucking hell, how did a sunbed shop let a first time user (or anyone) use 20 minutes?! I used to roast myself in the early 2000s 😬 and even then it was 9 mins max.
Anyway, it's done now. You need to speak to a GP if possible - I would also use an aloe or aftersun. Hopefully it won't be as bad as you think.

Same - I clicked on this thread as I was amazed that anyone would use a sunbed these days. Partly because of health awareness and partly because sunbed tans look a bit 1998 and I thought that people didn't chase that look any more.

Bringbackspring · 16/04/2025 18:10

Obviously you know that this was a bad idea now, so no point in telling you. But please don't assume all the blame yourself just because the woman working there was young and not paying attention.

Age is irrelevant. She very much should be fully trained, competent and paying proper attention. If you don't report this to the salon manager or head office, this could happen again and someone could end up even worse off. While it might be used for trivial purposes, a tanning salon full of hundreds of high power UV lamps being used completely unsupervised is a disaster in the making (or has already been made, looking at what's happened to you). Please, please report it. These places should be set up so that it is literally impossible for you to do that to yourself.

These things need banning.

But how will the drug dealers launder their money? 😁

I thought I’d be over the worst as in I didn’t think it would swell anymore. But the indents and little white dots are appearing. Think it’s going to blister. Im in agony. Feel dreadful. And i have no one to blame but myself. I went to a sunbed shop. But it’s my own fault as I used to tan very easily in the sun, I thought 20 minutes was standard. The young girl was probably 20 and wasn’t paying attention to me. Dumb dumb award of the year, goes to…..me.

No that one definitely went to me about 19 years ago when I decided to do a 30 minute stint on the sunbed. I’m fair skinned so the only colour I was ever going to go was the reddest shade of red possible. The one I used was a stand up one so even my underarms were burnt too, and to add insult, the tubing had just been changed and I managed to burn my arse cheek on it as I bent down to itch my foot. So not only could I not wear a bra for a good while I couldn’t sit down properly either 🤣

Llori · 16/04/2025 18:11

Sorry OP. I should have added that I really hope you're okay - get some medical attention and take care.

Ntsurewht · 16/04/2025 18:12

This happened to me 20 yrs ago. I wanted to be tanned and I was on direct 40 degrees sun for 3 hrs ( abroad)
I burnt so much I couldn’t even put clothes on, even cold shower was hurting me.
I ended up in hospital where all Drs went to look at me as never seen anything like that!
my lymphatic glands were swollen everywhere like a tennis balls.
My skin peeled like 4x .. this went on for about 3 weeks, with my skin swollen all over.
Since I have so many moles come up that I have checks every year.

God op 😱 that looks really sore. Please go to A&E today and get it seen too. Take pictures of your body and definitely report that salon.

I hope you are ok 💐 plenty of us have done daft things in our time.

foxyfour · 16/04/2025 18:14

Blimey OP. You really need medical attention.

Run a cool bath and sit in it, take pain killers and drink lots of water. It will be ok in a day or two.

Glokkey · 16/04/2025 18:19

Okay I know this is not what you want to hear at this very moment but sunbed use increases your cancer risk by 87% if you start using them before the age of 35. Skin cancer if caught very early is quite treatable but melanoma is HIGHLY likely to metastasise ie spread to organs. Horrible horrible horrible way to die. Women think they are invincible when they are young

I guess the same reason people drink and smoke despite knowing the risks: to feel good. I don’t go anymore but I used to, and it was much more about the experience and endorphin rush of getting warm sun(feeling)light on my body midwinter, than about a tan.

Ilovecakey · 16/04/2025 18:28

I have used tanning beds and usually start at 6-9 minutes then build up to 12 and may have done 15.

For people saying about the risks of skin cancer and why don't people use fake tan. Well I think fake tan you can usually tell its fake and it looks more orange than brown and you could say about the risks of smoking and cancer yet some people still do it also drinking and eating too much junk food etc. A lot of things in life comes with risks and people can do things if they want to take that risk.
The reason I went on sunbeds is that even though I tan well in the summer on my arms back and shoulders my legs always stay really white. I just wanted my legs to match my upper body and I hate having really white legs in shorts in the summer. Though I admit the risks do scare me and I am considering just getting a spray tan this year.

PaintYourAssLikeRembrandt · 16/04/2025 18:28

Agree with the others, rather than waiting about at A&E try and get an OOH appointment.

Plenty of fluids meantime.

I would also be sending the photos into the tanning shop, and explaining that the assistant let you go in for 20 minutes. Their staff need retraining.

Hope you get seen and feel better soon op.
