With the current media interest around the poor actress whose teeth have been mocked in a SNL skit, it got me thinking about my own situation.

I have had braces a couple of times now and have straight and healthy teeth. However when I was younger I had a very large gap in my front teeth, and very crowded bottom teeth.
I got a couple of negative comments, I remember when we were 17 a friend told me that 'I'd be so pretty if only I fixed my teeth!'.

Fortunately they didn't put most men off and one even said they liked my gap, for the record I think gaps are great, but mine was enormous and also my teeth tilted inwards.

I used to have a large bump in my nose, and an ex told me he liked my 'big nose'. I'd never said that, he just took it upon himself. I got another couple of comments about my nose.

Have since had the bump straightened and nobody ever comments on it.

Had another ex tell me I had flabby arms, even though I was a size 6-8 and exercised which was upsetting.

I never get any negative comments on my looks anymore. Now that I'm older with more self confidence, if anyone dared to, they'd regret it.
However I've just been thinking about how cruel people can be, and the fact is they're usually unhappy in themselves. Has anyone else had their appearance mocked?

I have a lot of scars on my face from reconstruction. I’ve had a lot of strangers make quite horrible passing comments.

I used to get grown men taking the piss out of my face when I was a child so that's very believable.

I'm really sorry you have to deal with that. It's a horrible feeling.

Planetmonster · 16/04/2025 19:58

Yes, in return I called them fat and said they have a big nose. They haven’t spoken to me since. 1 year and counting !

Reversetail · 16/04/2025 19:59

Loads of insults as a young woman shouted at me on the street.

SparklyGlitterballs · 16/04/2025 19:59

When I was in my early teens I was at the hairdresser. The woman doing my hair had someone with her and whilst chatting one of them said to the other "hasn't she got hairy arms!" They spoke as though I was deaf and couldn't hear what they were saying. I'm 60 now and it has stayed with me all my life. I wouldn't mind, but my arms were never really hairy, I just had dark hair. I remember going home and shaving them because I felt ashamed 😢

Nandortherelentles · 16/04/2025 20:00

I used to weigh 27 stone.

There was always someone openly laughing at me, shouting “fat cunt” out of a van window, other women tilting their heads and talking very slowly as I must have been stupid.

I got used to it.

ChopstickNovice · 16/04/2025 20:03

I was the only mixed race kid in my school back in the day (half Asian). Kids pulled up their eyes in the corners and shouted "ching chongey." Awful.

Poppymeldrum · 16/04/2025 20:03

Yes,by dps ex wife

I've never met the woman but she saw fit to download a load of my pictures from sm and then block me

I knew when she'd been gawping at my stolen photos as I'd get a load of nasty messages about the way I look, she'd leave it a week, then it would start up again

Everything from my 'manky hair' to 'dirty teeth' and 'spotty but wrinkly skin' (I have none of those things, but pulling me apart made her feel better about herself)

One photo,dd took of me in starbucks looks like I have a straw up my nose (she put it up for a laugh)i was screamed at for being 'a straw sniffer with a snotty nose' (I don't get that either)

Thing is,I have a very thick skin so her comments just slid off me

After all, she's no supermodel herself and I have the bloke she could bear to let go of-she couldn't admit to her own faults (which had nothing to do with her looks but is due to the fact she stabbed him, controlled him and spent all their money leaving them in thousands of pounds worth of debt, twice)

Ah well, nice to know that a daft selfie can wind her up,us dp fancies me and his option means more to me than hers

MyOliveBear · 16/04/2025 20:03

A friend told me a couple of days ago that without make up I’m definitely a “Plain Jane”. I occasionally wear a little make up but feel no need to wear it every day.

I'm ginger.

So of course.

Well yes and I'm short and fat too so a triple whammy🤣

It’s always grown men, never a woman and little kids say things but never maliciously just curious, never teens etc. I wouldn’t be thrilled at a teen saying it but I’d kind of get it, but it’s only ever grown men thinking they’re funny and just urgh. Sorry you went through it too ❤️

Ah, I am half Indian. My parents thought it would be a great idea to move from London to rural Cornwall in 1983.

My childhood was one long trauma due to racial bullying, I didn’t see another brown person, aside from my mother, for a decade.

Overtheatlantic · 16/04/2025 20:10

Had my tiny breasts called “bee stings” by a boy in class. My clever friend quipped back “needle dick” and that was that.

MightAsWellBeGretel · 16/04/2025 20:18

Yep, between the ages of 11 and 13 at school, particularly about my nose.

My nose is still ugly, but people haven't commented for a long time - probably because I don't associate with arseholes anymore. At school I learned to completely ignore it and luckily it stopped when they learned they wouldn't get a reaction from me.

In a strange way, not letting them affect me always made me feel stronger. I don't like my nose (but I never did, before the comments), but it's a part of me and I like myself. To me surgery and butchering yourself for vanity (NOT reconstructive or medical reasons) is a betrayal of yourself.

Mamma2025 · 16/04/2025 20:19

In my actual 20s I had long black hair and dark rimmed glasses. I dressed up for a wedding in a floral dress and a construct worker called out “Ugly Betty!” I was quite insulted!

I was getting to know a new colleague. She was a very trendy influencer type 20 something and I was in my 40s and a mum. I mentioned I had done a STEM degree. She said “oh, I thought there was something school teacher-ish about you!” 🙄 I was in a Sweaty Betty dress with cut outs so I didn’t think I had been giving off that vibe but oh well! I was more insulted than the Ugly Betty comment!

People are bloody weird, aren't they?! 🤣

waffleyversatile1 · 16/04/2025 20:24

Wellwornastro · 16/04/2025 15:06

Yes but not about my physical features. It's when I try to make an effort. I started trying to put ona little bit of face powder and from the comments you would think I was auditioning to join KISS. Any small attempt to deviate from my usual drab and plain clothes results in hilarity. Trying to make yourself better than you are is a phrase I hear often.

I don't know why this happens. I sometimes think I would like to go to a stylist but I couldn't face the ridicule of going out in nice clothes.

This is so sad. Who treats you like this?

I don't say anyone is a psychopath lightly

But she really is-ive never met (I say that loosely-ive never met her in person but ive had years of her squawking from behind the safety of her phone for darling to be with 'her' husband) anyone who has a soul as dead as hers

Oh well, takes all types to make a world

Motherknowsrest · 16/04/2025 20:27

Yes, loads from about age 6 as I was very hairy. Mostly from bitchy girls but the odd boy too.

anonymous98 · 16/04/2025 20:34

Yes, many times as a child and teenager. I'm still self-conscious some of the things in question years later. Kids are mean!

Got picked on for: having dandruff, wearing glasses, being (mildly) overweight, looking "like a boy" with my hair tied back, having boobs before everyone else had boobs, walking weirdly (!?), having "ugly" brown eyes. Wow! No wonder my self-esteem is non-existent

Seawolves · 16/04/2025 20:36

My mum never missed an opportunity to remind me I was a slag or a slut and not as clever as my brother or as good as my sister.

She would no longer be any friend of mine. I imagine she's no oil painting herself? Probably jealous and insecure. I'd tell her where to shove it.

This thread has made me despair about the human race, to be honest. Some of these comments are heartbreaking to read, a few more have come back to me.

I'm around 5'7, a 'friend' at school told me I had a very disproportionate body with a long torso and short legs, I got called hunchback because I had poor posture, also had the negging from abusive exes.

One would scream that I looked like a lesbian because I had a pixie cut. I had bad acne around the age of 21 and he told me he was embarrassed to be seen with me. Always criticised my eyebrows. They're eyebrows, ffs, who cares!
Had a mild lisp before I got braces and he mocked that too..my only excuse for staying in that relationship was being 21 and not knowing any better, looking back he was clearly projecting.

ballroompink · 16/04/2025 20:44

Yep all the time when I was a teenager by nasty individuals at school. I have a big nose and as a teen I also had short hair and looked quite androgynous (not very curvy, didn't wear much makeup) so used to get sneered at for 'looking like a man'. It gave me a huge complex about my looks that lasted well into my 20s unfortunately.
