AIBU to think Katy Perry being sent off into space is ridiculous?

Just seen the headline and honestly... what is the point in all this? Why are we so obsessed with celebrities doing things that have no real meaning? I mean, Katy Perry in space? Really?!!

There have been so many incredible women who worked for NASA and actually contributed to space exploration so where’s their recognition? Feels like proper history gets ignored in favour of flashy PR stunts.

Maybe I’m just getting old, but I honestly don’t get it anymore. And with AI and deepfakes and everything else, half the time I’m questioning if anything I see online is even real? (it’s kind of sad that we have to second guess reality every time I open my phone!)

Anyone else feel like this?

Or maybe I'm not getting it and missing the point here (if so, please fill me in!)

YABU – Let her go to space, it’s inspiring and harmless fun
YANBU – Agree, it’s performative nonsense and a distraction from real achievements

I believe she paid for the experience .

LlynTegid · 16/04/2025 12:15

The whole thing is a stunt and not real space travel.

As for Katy Perry, any respect I had for her went upon her marriage to Russell Brand.

mjf981 · 16/04/2025 12:19

She has always annoyed me. Filled with self importance and out of touch.

"Putting the ass back into astronaut"... "Space is finally going to be glam!"

Massive cringe. I'm embarrassed for her.

As long as I'm washing out my recycling and drinking through paper straws hey?

Honestly, the lot of them DESERVE the backlash they've got from this. The fact that the US government as we speak are removing details of any women who have worked on NASA projects, denoucing them as DEI hires, while we're supposed to believe that this lot were genuinely trying to improve the world?

Its a vanity, performance-led piece of bullshit from people with far more money than sense.

It's the 2025 equivalent of rich people climbing everest and littering the place with their tents and oxygen tanks, while expecting the sherpas to carry all their gear for them.

I liked it when the door pretty much fell off the "capsule" as Bezos pretended to open it with a special key, then he fell over.

Hoppinggreen · 16/04/2025 12:37

Whats ridiculous is bringing her back

Simonjt · 16/04/2025 12:39

Well she didn’t really go to space, she likely wants people to forget that she bought a convent and forcibly evicted the nuns despite promising them a lifetime interest.

Maitri108 · 16/04/2025 12:41

Wasn't it just an egregious show of wealth? I don't think there was any meaning behind it.

Hugely wealthy man sends 'dolly birds' into space in phallic contraption. Women as accessories.

IHaveBeenAroundTheBlock · 16/04/2025 12:59

I wish she'd stayed there for good.

comeandhaveteawithme · 17/04/2025 12:21

Her kissing the ground when she returned was utterly ridiculous.

That's what people did when they'd been exiled from their countries for years. Not when they'd taken a voluntary 10 minute flight.

Thank god for Katy, showing those female astronauts who don't have a hot arse or Chanel lipstick, and who rely instead on their silly achievements, how it should be done. Girl Power!

Bringing her back was the ridiculous bit.
