Weird thoughts other people must think...

Surely everyone has a fleeting thought of the bath falling through the ceiling whilst they're in it?

Does anyone else have this thought?

And other recurring little thoughts people have that other people must also think?

I have the one where I feel the urge to reach out and touch a train or tube train as it rushes past. I feel drawn to it.

Mine is only minor compared but I'm a teacher and I always have this fear when I sit down on my spinning chair after walking round room/writing on the board, I'm going to miss it and fall straight on my bum

I actually did something similar. I was on Library duty and was scooting backwards and forwards along behind the library desk, checking what the children were doing around the library. Scooted too hard, fell off the stool and landed on the floor. I wasn't hurt, dignity in tatters though-except amazingly, no-one noticed as children were all concentrating on whatever they were doing on the computers or whatever. (The computers were arranged so staff could see the screens so children had their backs to the desk)

I got up, dusted myself off and tried very hard to look nonchalant. One of my many epic fails.

The bath falling is a recurring fear of mine. I even asked a plumber to check the integrity of the floor.

When I was a child, I was terrified by the guillotine, and because France was celebrating the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution, guillotine imagery was everywhere.
In my school there were old toilets with a chain to trigger the flush. It reminded me of the trigger for the guillotine and I was TERRIFIED to flush. i could almost hear the roaring of the angry crowd.

When I ride I bike, I see myself leaning forward and putting my finger in the spokes and see it being sliced like a baby carrot.

Ok so here is mine… you learn that you ‘see’ images upside down then your brain flips the images right side up… so are we all just upside down and we don’t know it because our brains have compensated?

Maybe we see things the way they are (upside down) and our brains just say “nah they can handle the truth and make so we think we are right side up… or upside down.” I will admit I get a little confused in this train of thought.

The ‘upside down’ think is just the way optics work. But the way our brains can compensate is remarkable - this ‘inverted glasses’ experiment for instance

About how I would get out of a submerged car now you can’t wind windows down. Do you just wait for it to sink and fill up so you aren’t pushing against the water?

Yes - basically, when the car fills up, the pressure will equalize and you can open the door. They did this on Mythbusters and as long as you stay calm and don't panic (easier said than done), you should have enough air left. Or get one of those pointy things to smash the window.

Oioisavaloy27 · 16/04/2025 08:13

Yes to the bath one but I actually know someone that this happened to..... I always triple check before driving away from the petrol pump that I haven't left the nossle in the car.

dontforgettofloss · 16/04/2025 08:26

I’m always scared to close my eyes in the bath or shower in case a spider dangles from the ceiling and lands on me, no idea why, maybe I’ve seen it in a film at some point

Well thanks a lot! I have never thought this before but now I wont be able to go into the bathroom without thinking it!😂

I feel like this, but with the extra drain hole thing that the plug dangles from (is it part of the drain? 🤔) - I always imagine one folded up in there and suddenly climbing out.

But then, won’t the water cause the electrics to fail and the central locking might activate or jam?
Maybe I just need to plan my routes so I don’t drive near or over any rivers?! 😫

You can get a little tool that’s for cutting seatbelts and smashing the window.

Handy for any accident really if for some reason the seatbelt it stuck or caught up from a. Crash.

You mean the overflow? In some older houses this may be a pipe going straight outside (newer ones usually loop down into the bath drain pipe) so if no one ever overfills the bath to that point you could have things living in it.

Yes, that’s the word I was looking for.

And now my worst fear is confirmed I think I will be sticking something over it next time I’m in the bath!

scalt · 16/04/2025 12:32

Can spiders really come up through the plug hole, if the trap (u-bend) underneath is full of water, as it usually is?

The book “a house inside out” by Penelope Lively describes wood lice living in the bath drain pipe, and an important rite of passage for young wood lice is to go out through the plug hole, and try to climb up the side of the bath, and to fail magnificently.

Oh also I have recurrent thoughts about where I'd hide a dead body if I killed someone. I am about as far from being a murderer as you can get but the thought pops unwanted into my head especially when driving alone
Urgh!

I have a slightly similar one... if I'm walking through woods or secluded area I wonder how many dead bodies have been hidden there

Violashifts · 16/04/2025 13:02

I live my life with stupid thoughts. It can be delibating when bad.

A car will drive into me from the other side of the carriageway.
A train won't stop and will crash.
The boiler will burst and scald us all to death.
A rat will come up the toilet.
Family members or I will be kidnapped going to the shops.
Chargers will catch fire and burn the house down.
loads more that I can't think of.

I haven't done the bath one but may now. 🤦‍♀️

I also have most of those. They are thankfully fairly fleeting so not too debilitating. But just to say a faulty charger did set on fire in our house, we lost 80% of our belongs and had to live in temporary accommodation for a year. Don’t leave things charging!!

Yep, my friend woke up with a smouldering pillow after she left her phone charging under it!
