What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

@quirkychick that’s why we moved from Bristol to Bath -as realised I only really liked Clifton and whiteladies Road - downs is full of rough sleepers- we lived quite close- had car smashed into via back window and it felt threatening. it was totally taken over by the ‘right on’ brigade to a silly extent some years ago who just don’t notice mess, grime, run down ness as they think it’s diverse. Nope I just think it felt a giant scruffy mess. And I’m not a right winger either- but I don’t like grime and left to rot - and the centre is awful- guess it suits some, didn’t suit us anymore.

Some of East Sussex including Lewes.

Felt uneasy on the Norfolk coast.

The A74(M) southbound and parts of the M6 especially around Shap.

Some parts of the M1 especially around Sheffield.

May I ask why on the norfolk coast? Just curious with an upcoming hol booked there😅

sparrowflewdown · 14/04/2025 21:42

Radon also may have something to do with it. High levels in Bath, Bristol, Malvern and most of Cornwall.

Beaniebeemer · 14/04/2025 21:42

Torquay
Portland, Dorset. Doesn’t even feel like you are in England when you are there. Most of the buildings look odd

Dontsayyouloveme · 14/04/2025 21:43

Penzance… lovely marina but the town centre is like a weird ghost town …

Most on this thread don't seem to be explaining why somewhere is making them feel weird - they are just listing places they didn't like.
I can name loads of places I don't like but none of them make me feel weird .

Not me, most of the places I've mentioned are perfectly nice to look are but ARE weird...

ChristmasFairyLiquid · 14/04/2025 21:44

As PP have said, Beachy Head… I think I was just really sad thinking about all the souls who have ended their lives there, plus it feels weirdly like it would be easy to do - not just the height but that odd feeling you sometimes get that you might just hurl yourself off somewhere and not be able to stop yourself.

I’d read an article about it previously and a sentence really stuck with me - about how they find broken fingernails at the top of the cliff where people have changed their minds and tried to save themselves 😢

Agree with the PP who said Porthgain in Pembrokeshire - very dark feeling place.

Anywhere hemmed in by big hills, I’m fine with flat landscapes.

The Secret Nuclear Bunker near Brentwood … the thought of being shut in there in the event of a war… would definitely prefer to take my chances with the radiation.

There’s a country pub somewhere in Oxfordshire/Bucks borders (Crendon??) that I’ve been to twice and both times gone home to shocking news, so that has a kind of retrospective weirded out-ness for me. Never risking going there again! Even if I knew exactly where it was!

I stayed in halls in Milliners Way in my first year which were quite a way from the main uni campus in town. There was an underpass I hated walking through and on one occasion when walking back to my flat through that underpass (I was walking with my then boyfriend and another male friend) I was mockingly groped by a man who was part of a much bigger group of men walking in the opposite direction. It was horrible.

That must have been a really horrible experience,
sadly all to common there, Milliners way by Bury Park was quite a distance wasn’t it, one of the worst areas at the time for a student to live.

I was in James Court, the other side of town, I did
like it there, it was fairly quiet. My boyfriend was in Eaton Green by the airport, one hell of a trek to walk from mine to his.

my second and third year I was in Cambridge street, and then on Tennyson Road, steepest bloody hill in Luton, fantastic walking up there when pissed 😂

we did have a stint above a kebab shop for six months which was the worst place I’ve ever lived, not only was it condemned by the council but one night the kebab shop was done over at closing time , just awful, poor owner who was lovely, we helped him clean up and calmed him down after the police arrived. We had free kebabs until we moved out a month later.

fun times. Not really.

Floogal · 14/04/2025 21:45

@Picle I always liked Lewes. Seaford is nice too. Newhaven town centre is a bit scary though.

Moonlightdust · 14/04/2025 18:02

Milton Keynes is depressing.

The weirdest place I’ve visited is Coombe Abbey in Coventry. Very spooky experience there.

I once interviewed someone who was working there and asked her if the ghost stories are true. We went very much off topic whilst she recounted some of her experiences there!

Lonelycrab · 14/04/2025 21:45

Newport on the IOW has dodgy get out of here vibes. Fine in the daytime but come the evening it has a menacing feel. Maybe that’s just the locals- has a strange edgy dare I said it drugged up vibe compared to the rest of the island. Won’t be returning unless I absolutely have to, which is unlikely.

It would be interesting to know what makes some of these places give someone a weird feeling though.

AuraBora · 14/04/2025 21:47

Bodmin Moor definitely. Very bleak and eerie. Some of the villages in Dartmoor - although my husband absolutely loves everything about Dartmoor and can't understand this.
Glen Affric in Scotland, beautiful but parts of it felt quite creepy somehow. Especially the old shop nr our campsite which was run by a man who we thought was like Geoffrey Dharma..
Also found Skye a bit unsettling somehow...

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 14/04/2025 21:47

I live in Manchester but hate going to or past Saddleworth Moors for obvious reasons 😖 It makes me feel weird knowing that little boy and possibly more are still out there.

Linnet · 14/04/2025 21:49

TheFatCatsWhiskers1 · 14/04/2025 13:25

Perth, Scotland.

Why? I’m curious can you elaborate? do you find it weird/creepy or do you just not like it?

AramintaLee · 14/04/2025 21:49

Westward Ho! which I visited as a teen during October half term. It was a ghost town and all the shops were shut... I can remember the window shutters banging and there wasn't another person around. Very creepy.

Oh yes, poor Julian! ☹️

I like the idea of people from the Sarf can't cope with the North, as long as it keeps them away. The definition of the North varies from where one lives, from Brighton for example London is North. A large number consider that the North is Manchester, Leeds etc., the M62 is the 'border'.

I live 10 miles away from Britain's most southerly point. You're all Northerners to me 😆

Statsinyoureyes · 14/04/2025 21:53

Clarkenwell in London always feels like a place of lost souls and desolation to me, especially around the green

JudgeJ · 14/04/2025 21:53

Wintersgirl · 14/04/2025 20:22

The Cannock Chase is quite creepy...

Wasn't that the location of the infamous murders of two little girls in the'60s?

Wintersgirl · 14/04/2025 21:54

usernamealreadytaken · 14/04/2025 21:38

I was going to say Findon, and Cissbury ring, which aren’t far!

Yes, around there it almost has a mystical vibe like Wiltshire, Chanctonbury Ring is another one which is odd, lots of UFOs spotted in the area, in fact my DH was driving home late one night on the A24 and he saw an odd looking craft, it bothered him so much he stopped in a layby to watch it. a few minutes later another car pulled in and they got out to watch too, and just to let you know my DH is and Airline Pilot so he's used to seeing lots of aircraft at night but he couldn't explain this....

2021x · 14/04/2025 21:55

Bodmin Moor is a bit spooky. I wonder if there is something that happens to sound when you are there.

WhiteWriting · 14/04/2025 21:55

Perry near Grafham Water - my grandparents lived there and I remember driving past the borstal - portentous - and then the rows of perfectly manicured 70s houses and the Yacht Club. It felt 'off', a facade with horror hiding behind the net curtains.

My mum grew up in Stacksteads ,I have very fond memories of Bacup and surrounding areas My Grandad used to tske me to Stubby Lee park
It is a quaint little place though .

Never heard it called that before!! I call it the “boomerang” town. Everyone I know (including myself) who has moved away from the area, always comes back!!! It’s just a very small town that happens to always have a lot going on!! And another poster mentioned “Waterfoot”. We always used to laugh as every pie shop there, was next to a butchers! But yeah, charity shops and tattoo parlours is about right!!
