What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Lockerbie…. Couldn’t wait to get out of there. I will never go there again.

London. Hate it. Such horrible unwelcoming people.

Yeah it's true! All 8.9 million of us are utter cunts!

Bodmin: it’s the beast😱

As a carefree teenager me and a bunch of mates on an ambitious walking holiday decided to trek up onto the hills to find a camp spot. We were chased back down by some horrendous sounding animal in the dead of night, I kid you not.

We ended up camping about 2 inches from the main road behind a bush.

It’s an ancient ritual site. They’re still finding stone circles. They also executed a LOT of people in that jail. Who knows what’s really running around the moors. It’s not somewhere I’d go camping.

Yes! I knew there was something about Canary Wharf I couldn't put my finger on and you've nailed it., DH and I went out for dinner there and it was just odd, not creepy but odd..

Canary wharf - I didn't mind it too much. I mean it is grey and soulless and I don't like what it stands for but it's clean and felt safe.

Take it you’ve never been to Bacup??? Home of brassic lol!!! One of the strangest places in England. Apparently the league of gentlemen when looking for filming locations wanted somewhere weird. They came to Bacup and found it too weird and only filmed a little bit. We are also famed for Juliet Bravo and I believe an episode of hetty wainthrop was filmed here. Walking into any of our local drinking establishments highly resembles the pub scene in “American werwolf in London”, if you’re not local that is. Personally I love the place.

My mum grew up in Stacksteads ,I have very fond memories of Bacup and surrounding areas My Grandad used to tske me to Stubby Lee park
It is a quaint little place though .

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 14/04/2025 21:27

I liked Slapton Ley nature reserve I think that’s the same Slapton as mentioned . Was lovely for bird watching

OrangeAndPistachio · 14/04/2025 21:27

It's really funny reading what people have to say about where you live. This is a great thread.

It’s the same as anywhere there has been great tragedy. Hillsborough is the strangest place I’ve ever been. Not creepy, just overwhelming. You can literally feel the sadness in the air. My DH used to work in Soham a lot. He could never get out of there fast enough.

South Croydon isn’t too bad. The further south you go the better it gets. Purley is ok, Coulsdon and Kenley, Sanderstead are really quite decent.

The bit to avoid is around west Croydon station, going north towards Thornton Heath.

That "bit to avoid" is where I used to live!

If West Croydon, Thornton Heath and Selhurst stations were 3 points of a triangle, my old house would have been damn near in the middle of it. I moved away 34 years ago, and only see that part of Croydon when a crime or a riot makes the national news.

Warrington. It's the roundabouts.

And witches were burnt on Pendal hill overlooking it. Get to Lancaster as quick as you can if you are ever there. Someone told me at least 25 000 visitors have never returned from there just in this century. I believe them.

Yep, I live under Pendle Hill, we are all witches beware.

quirkychick · 14/04/2025 21:31

Bristol felt weird and off, and I like big, busy cities. I liked the bit near Clifton Bridge but the city centre just felt off.

The Jersey Underground Hospital (that's what it was called when I went) is very weird and odd.

I love Bath, the New Forest and Thetford Forest.

Kettering- weirdly deserted

Depends which part of the town you go to.
Wicksteed Park is always busy and Pleasure Park in the summer has live music in the bandstand.
Yes the town centre is run down but that's a tiny part of the town.
I think many on this thread are judging a town by it's town centre/high street.

ziggazigboom · 14/04/2025 21:32

Too many posts to read through so I’m sure it’s already been said: Jaywick.
i came across it accidentally whilst doing a run from a near by holiday park. I didn’t know anything about it / had never heard of it. The unpaved streets and prefabs reminded me of a township in South Africa!
I then became a bit obsessed with it and read up on its history. It was (possibly still is)the most deprived area in the UK.

Spanglybangles · 14/04/2025 21:33

@sodabreadjam I have an identical story about Barrow-in-Furness when we were also in holiday in the Lake District as kids. It was awful, my dad literally turned the car round and left. Whole family remembers that and it gets mentioned from time to time.

We call this type of villages and pubs "We be not loiking strangers round these 'ere parts"😄

It's far worse if you visit a church in a non touristy area. You may as well be an alien from outer space walking in.

MissyB1 · 14/04/2025 12:03

A village called Slapton in South Devon, felt like a weird vibe, unwelcoming.

Liverpool, had to go regularly for a year for a work course I was doing. Really don't want to offend any Liverpudlians - it was just very outside my comfort zone.

Did you spend time near Bold Street in the city centre? That known for having a timeslip

Needmorelego · 14/04/2025 21:34

Pricelessadvice · 14/04/2025 21:19

Enjoying this thread but honestly I’ve never had a weird vibe anywhere so I’m starting to wonder what’s wrong with me?!
I’ve had places that aren’t for me or I wouldn’t bother going back to, but honestly can’t say I have felt weird at any of them.

Most on this thread don't seem to be explaining why somewhere is making them feel weird - they are just listing places they didn't like.
I can name loads of places I don't like but none of them make me feel weird .

slet · 14/04/2025 21:35

Fascinating thread!

as a child I remember being freaked out by Coniston water when I learned about bluebird and I felt really creeped out by it. Same with Mother Shipton’s cave in Yorkshire where stuff gets petrified. Creepy AF.

i don’t really feel I have been creeped out by a place as an adult. Loads of places mentioned on this thread are places I absolutely love, like London, Holy Island, the part of Edinburgh mentioned around George IV bridge, and I just love Liverpool, felt at home there right away.

I’ve been to Hillsborough, but it was in no way as bad as Lockerbie.

We had stopped just to grab fish and chips and a quick toilet break on the way home from Northern Scotland.
We didn’t even stop to eat lunch, just jumped back in the car and shot out of there! Ate our lunch in a lay-by and I waited for my wee!

I’ve always wondered what it was like prior to the plane incident. Was it a normal place or has it always been so intimidating?

DaringcAT · 14/04/2025 21:36

Smokesandeats · 14/04/2025 12:51

Belfast. My DH looks ‘foreign’ and we felt very unwelcome there. I’m hoping we were just unlucky and it isn’t always like that!

Unfortunately NI can be very racist. Not everyone but it’s holding strong even through generations. There are some in NI who have never left, will never leave and believe there to be only two religions. Can you tell I escaped and never looked back!

gotohellforheavenssake · 14/04/2025 21:37

My two places have both been mentioned several times, which weirds me out even more!

Boscastle - stayed there in August 2004. Had the most horrible feeling whilst in the woods, and had to leave. The following week the village suffered catastrophic flooding.

Forest of Dean - can’t remember exactly where as was a young child. Felt so uncomfortable and heavy. Stayed in a caravan site with the estuary, filled with mud whirlpools, on one side, and a wood on the other. I remember animal footprints in a stone in the woods which freaked me out.

WhiteWriting · 14/04/2025 21:37

blueshoes · 14/04/2025 21:10

I have never been to Morecombe Bay but I have been haunted by the tragic description of the group of tragic cocklepickers who drowned on the vast mud flats when the tide came in faster than a galloping horse.

Anyone been there?

Yes - the massive Art Dec hotel had just been refurbished when we went - full of daytrippers in cagoules gawping in the foyer. Horrible drizzle and mist hanging over the town. Ate chips sitting in car watching morbidly obese tattooed women on motility scooters.

Don’t get Liverpool at all - love it and I’m a snob- guess we are all different

Timeslips happen in Liverpool! Waterstones bookshop apparently....

Right then, the Creature.

I've posted about it before, on the Goatman threads (2022!)

We had a very strange one once, near Stenying. Wooded road, driving along. About to turn right, into a different road. At the road junction ahead, we saw what looked like a person standing on the left. It was like a 2D cutout of black shadow. Thin and tall, with clear long legs and arms, but in proportion. We indicated to go right, and the thing crossed the road, with one leg reaching to the other side, elongating, then the body and other leg followed over. As we left the original road, we then couldn't see it on the right side of the original road, or on the left of our new road. It was sodding creepy, the way it moved, and that there was no detail to is, just a black cut out. We did wonder if it was trying to get onto the car, as when it crossed, we would have been driving right over it, if we hadn't left that road. Crossroads were often chosen as placed to bury those outside societal norms.

Edited

I was going to say Findon, and Cissbury ring, which aren’t far!
