What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Thats because anywhere outside the M25 is full of dragons and sea monsters obviously.

Bethnal Green.

Camden. I love London, but not Camden.

bungobungobungo · 14/04/2025 11:50

@OollliivviiaaI don’t think Glasgow Central Station is difficult to navigate? However the weird feeling could be because there is a hidden part of the city underneath that not many travellers are aware of, and it is known to be quite spooky.

MurdoMunro · 14/04/2025 11:53

Mumsnet? 😆

But seriously, the Black Isle. Can’t wait to get through it.

londongirl12 · 14/04/2025 11:55

dungeness. It’s like a nuclear holocaust has happened and there’s nothing left but a few people living in sheds.

Hapagirl48 · 14/04/2025 11:58

Blackness Castle near Edinburgh. I love history and ruins etc so castle ruins don’t usually weird me out but I left with a really dark heavy feeling and have never been back despite it being fairly close.

DancingDucks · 14/04/2025 12:01

I love Glasgow Central station I think it has a lovely feeling to it. 😂

For me it was Stratford in east London, I couldn't wait to get away from it.

NewtPond · 14/04/2025 12:02

Milton Keynes. Nothing sinister, but I’m not originally from the UK had only lived in Oxford and London, and had never had any reason to go there until I was reviewing a play in preview before it transferred to the West End — I think I knew it was a new city, but wasn’t prepared for what that actually felt like, or that the Theatre District felt like an out of town retail park, with a theatre surrounded by branches of chains like TGI Friday and Zizi.

Always feels like the set for a murder or horror film. I used to live fairly close. I kind of liked it for the lighthouse but I don’t think I’d want to be there in the dark 😂

A village called Slapton in South Devon, felt like a weird vibe, unwelcoming.

Liverpool, had to go regularly for a year for a work course I was doing. Really don't want to offend any Liverpudlians - it was just very outside my comfort zone.

Harrogate

Wishyouwerehere50 · 14/04/2025 12:05

Thurso, North Scotland.

So weird and claustrophobic.

Rochester Castle did the same to me - it gave me the creeps and made me feel very much on edge the whole time we were there - no other castle has had that effect...

TallulahBetty · 14/04/2025 12:07

Caldey Island, with the monastery. Creepy vibes. And this was YEARS before the abuse allegations came to light.

Katiesaidthat · 14/04/2025 12:07

Hampton Court, I was 13 and I found it creepy.

mjf981 · 14/04/2025 12:07

Irlam (edge of Manchester). Worked there for 3 weeks. Seriously weird and backwards place/people.

Harrogate

Oh, my goodness! Do you know why? Apart from mad people queuing for an overpriced pot of tea at Betty's, I've always loved Harrogate!

Camden. I love London, but not Camden.

Yeah when I went there. I was like the most normal, non drugged up and not drunk woman. It was very normal to be doing lines in the middle of the street or smoking stuff in punk shops. My friend said they had an awesome market. I got a dress there and never returned!

Loudcloud · 14/04/2025 12:11

Some of the moors in the Peak District / North West. I love hiking and they are really beautiful, and I love the solitude. However, bits of them have such an eerie, bleak feeling to them, like something terrible has happened. It’s hard to put a finger on, especially the area above Glossop, off Snake Pass.

Slapton was the scene of a disaster in WW2 when American servicemen rehearsing the D-Day landings were sunk by German E-boats resulting in over 700 deaths.

The centre of Bolton when all the spiced-up zombies are out can be grim. I took some foreign students there once and they couldn't believe the place.

The centre of Bury isn't much better - it appears to be comprised entirely of vape shops and the people just look defeated, even the ones not on spice.

All of Rochdale.

All of Wigan.

killerbootsman · 14/04/2025 12:13

I've mentioned this on here before on a similar thread.

The Italian Chapel on Orkney ... couldn't go near the place, felt as if there was an unnatural force pushing me away and I got a full body shiver and cold sweat.
Never felt like that anywhere else, very strange.
