What places in the UK have weirded you out?

I know Glastonbury and Bath always come up but where else have you been that just felt "off". Not scary or unsafe as such, just made you feel unwelcome and want to leave. And logically, WHY do you think they do?

Mine are

  • Glasgow Centeal station. I've been to lots of stations at all sorts of times but this station always makes me uneasy even during the day when it's busy. Maybe it's because it's such an odd station and easy to get disoriented in.
And
  • Berwick on Tweed. Really, really weird vibes there. People were nice enough but it felt a bit like there was some sort of sinister undercurrent. Why? I actually don't know. All I can think of is that it feels quite isolated and a bit like the edge of the world. Maybe the history of the place, means it feels like a no man's land? I know lots of people really like it.
And
  • Holy Island. The history, bleakness and again, isolation I think. Plus when we went, all you could hear was the wind and seals which is a bit spooky. I liked it there though.

Oh op I love Berwick!

For me I thought Glasgow was iffy.

Didn't get on with Caernarfon. Very odd vibe and the town was super dirty. Castle was ok though.

Chocolateismylovelife · 14/04/2025 12:44

Lydd in Kent and Canvey Island. Both feel like stuck in the 80’s skinhead era.

HarryVanderspeigle · 14/04/2025 12:45

Selfridges. Went in once years ago and couldn't work out how to get out again. Proper panicked feeling that I was trapped.

Tinseltuttifruitti · 14/04/2025 12:45

Brighton, had an odd vibe

Picle · 14/04/2025 12:45

Salisbury and the A30 leading out of it.

turkeyboots · 14/04/2025 12:47

I second Dungeness. I find very flat places werid. And there was a train station in Surrey (which i have forgotten the name of) which gave me the heebie geebies. I had 40min there between trains, it was so creepy and I was almost in tears when my train arrived.

OverpricedCupcake · 14/04/2025 12:47

North Berwick, its the type of place I'd usually love but I had this really unnerving anxious feeling the whole time I was there that lifted as I was driving away.

Rollofrockandsand · 14/04/2025 12:47

Swaffham in Norfolk the place time forgot

Hastings.

God yes Hastings - what a hole! Visited a relative there a couple of years ago and thought we’d have a nice family weekend by the seaside! Should have done my research / it’s one of the bleakest places I’ve ever been to. Despite driving 3 hours to get there we turned around and went straight home.

Smokesandeats · 14/04/2025 12:51

Belfast. My DH looks ‘foreign’ and we felt very unwelcome there. I’m hoping we were just unlucky and it isn’t always like that!

MyKingdomForACat · 14/04/2025 12:51

Tiswa · 14/04/2025 12:18

There are a couple of places for me that feel as if history is existing all at once and the ones in the UK are Liverpool Docks and the Grand Hotel in Brighton (there was one in Austria as well).

Then Camden has a weird vibe and a village near Longleat in Wiltshire I can’t remember the name of

I stay at The Grand quite a bit. What do you mean?

Portmerion. Appeared deserted but felt like we were being watched. I haven't seen The Prisoner so that didn't account for it.

Oh God, same here.
I kept wondering why we were there, and it wasn't cheap to get in either.

Also, Coventry - I just couldn't figure out what it was for

I'll second this. Only place I've ever seen security guards outside supermarkets at 8am. I can't think of a redeeming feature of this city yet a lot of people rave about it.

It just had a depressing, unsafe feeling about it.

I’ve lived in Manchester for over a decade and whilst I don’t quite agree it’s like the zombie apocalypse, it has definitely got worse during that 10 years. So much good stuff going on but there’s a real problem with drug taking, aggressive begging, and a generally unsafe feeling in some parts of the city centre, especially the notorious Piccadilly Gardens. The council really needs to tackle it robustly.

Yuja · 14/04/2025 12:56

Dungeness. So weird, went years ago and have never forgotten it!

Pigeon31 · 14/04/2025 12:57

Swindon. Sorry to any Swindonites but I had to go there once for a job interview and I'd already decided by the time I got off the train that it felt weird and I didn't want to live there.

Leeds is a lovely city but tbh the first impression you get when you come in off the M1 is not good :)

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 14/04/2025 12:57

Bath, I'm fine with, I do wonder if people find it a bit odd due to the caldera shape of the hills, which affects the wind sounds here.

Chantonbury ring, has a seriously unpleasant feel, there is something watching you there.

Mid Sussex, had an unpleasant experience when driving with a weird creature/shadow that couldn't have been there really.

The cutting between the Devonshire and Combe Down tunnels.

The crypt at Farleigh Hungerford castle. With the lead coffins.

DwayneDibleysTeeth · 14/04/2025 12:57

Avebury in Wiltshire. Went there on a school trip just after 'Children of the Stones' had been on TV (child of the 70s 😁) and I couldn't wait to leave!

I love Northumbria and we go quite a lot but had never been to Berwick, I assumed it was a bit like Alnwick - it was not, it was just all a bit sad.
Luckily we had rented a lovely house with friends so had a great time anyway.
I do love Holy Island though, I suppos its a bit eerie but thast part of its charm

Teacherjw · 14/04/2025 12:57

Got weird vibes from the town of Lairg, felt like complete outsiders. It's also so remote and far north in Scotland that it was off the tourist trail.

Needmorelego · 14/04/2025 12:58

HarryVanderspeigle · 14/04/2025 12:45

Selfridges. Went in once years ago and couldn't work out how to get out again. Proper panicked feeling that I was trapped.

Oh god yes.
There's probably feral people living in there - they haven't managed to find the exits.
That place is confusing, too bright and too hot.
I also hate the escalators there because you can see all the way down the levels and that freaks me out.

I was there once just before Christmas and it was like that but also very loud and full of people and I just had to leave.

LonelyMom123 · 14/04/2025 13:00

We drove through Brean and I felt it had a horrible creepy/ seedy vibe. Never felt like it before or since.

LightDrizzle · 14/04/2025 13:00

Wishyouwerehere50 · 14/04/2025 12:05

Thurso, North Scotland.

So weird and claustrophobic.

Same here. We saw a 40th birthday party in some kind of function room off a chippy and I’ve seen more cheerful wakes.

GottaWork · 14/04/2025 13:00

Selsey near Chichester felt way off to me. It's actually very pretty but I think it's something about it being at the tip of a peninsula maybe? I can't really say what it was but I felt very weird and could sense the relief as we left.

Loloblue · 14/04/2025 13:01

Canvey Island, Essex. Shit hole.
