To cancel camping because of the rain

Camping in the lake district, rain from now till we leave, all day and night. Not slept a wink tonight, everyone is so cold, barely slept last night (first night). Will drop to 5 then 3 degrees at night before the end of our trip. Both DDs unwell. DH will most certainly want to stay until the bitter end but I can't do 3 more nights of this. AIBU to insist we leave tomorrow? We have another holiday in a few weeks and another in the school holidays

Sounds grim, go home!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 14/04/2025 03:23

Go home.
Be warm, dry & comfortable.

HiRen · 14/04/2025 03:24

That sounds worse than prison tbh. At least you’d be warm and dry while you’re stuck in a confined space!

Pepperama · 14/04/2025 03:32

Absolutely I’d leave - just bad timing that the nice weather spell is over

MumChp · 14/04/2025 03:36

Go home or an emergency trip to an outdoor shop for winter gear. A winter sleeping bag, a winter sleeping mat and good clothes are musthaves in those temperatures. Quite expensive.

Bellshellss · 14/04/2025 03:39

Yeah, fuck that.

Wha is the fun in being cold, wet and miserable? I’m no fan of camping anyway, but in shitty weather, it’s just hell.

Where is the fun?

Flatandhappy · 14/04/2025 03:39

Why would you do that to yourself (and your kids). Go home and be comfortable.

Scottishskifun · 14/04/2025 03:43

I'm a lover of camping OP come rain or shine but with kids it's a different ball game all together! The fact that your DDs are unwell is enough to go home. Lack of sleep isn't going to get them better.

There is zero point risking hyperthermia purely for the sake of it.
Simply state they are ill, they need rest which nobody is getting.

Pandimoanymum · 14/04/2025 03:46

I’ve been there, it’s grim. We cut short our camping holiday by a week years ago because it was so awful and we didn’t have kids to think about either. Save yourselves! Go home.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 14/04/2025 03:54

Have you seen The Good Place on Netflix? Because you’re living my The Bad Place.

FortyElephants · 14/04/2025 04:30

YANBU - camping in April is not a good idea in the UK, it's always too cold at night and weather too unreliable.

tangobravo · 14/04/2025 05:15

Is the weather better at home? Go home and camp in the garden for the novelty! Either way definitely go home

Oblomov25 · 14/04/2025 05:18

I'm a fair weather camper, (actually I never do tents, I only do caravans), actually not just camping, in all areas of life, I just don't like doing ten tours 15 mile hike in the pissing rain. Stay home.

EveryFlavourJellyBeans · 14/04/2025 05:25

I live in the Lake District. In a house. I'm in bed and it's still cold. Go home!

Esperanza25 · 14/04/2025 05:26

I would also be heading home in the morning, especially if DDs are already unwell.
Can DH stay on his own if he’s that keen?

Natsku · 14/04/2025 05:43

They're ill so of course you head home!
Camping in any weather can be fine (in scouts DD camped in winter when there was snow on the ground and it was below zero) but only with the right equipment - if you're cold then you don't have the right equipment and you're just going to be miserable

It's great if you have the rightvgear. If not. No.

Zanatdy · 14/04/2025 06:11

I’d be insisting on leaving if the DC are unwell. Who wants to be in a freezing cold tent when unwell, where everything is damp? He is incredibly selfish if he insists on staying.

LoudSnoringDog · 14/04/2025 06:14

We don’t camp anymore but did it loads when my sons were young. I can recall the misery vividly. It’s grand if the weather is good but utterly awful when it rains. I would pack up ( another miserable task) and get home.

SpanThatWorld · 14/04/2025 06:18

I absolutely love camping.

That sounds awful. Go home.

CaptainFuture · 14/04/2025 06:19

Where in lake are you? Last minute air b.n
B?

Bigfish51 · 14/04/2025 06:26

Go home leave your DH there. Camping and skiing are the same, if the weathers not good I abandon ship! We do have ski slopes near to our house so it’s not like we are trapped on a holiday package. Camping, it’s not worth being miserable, rain is bearable but cold and rain is not!

FrenchandSaunders · 14/04/2025 06:31

I just had a flashback to a Cornish camping trip like this when our DDs were young. Hideous. Go home.

Jblack · 14/04/2025 06:32

I love camping, I'm a big time outdoorsy gal, and I would absolutely 100% pack up and go home in your situation 😂 different story if I was out solo or adult only camping, but with the kids? Nah, I'd be out of there, doesn't sound fun for anyone

Cookielover64 · 14/04/2025 06:33

Isn't being wet, cold, tired and miserable the default setting for camping in the UK?

But yes, go home, it sounds miserable.
