To cancel camping because of the rain

Camping in the lake district, rain from now till we leave, all day and night. Not slept a wink tonight, everyone is so cold, barely slept last night (first night). Will drop to 5 then 3 degrees at night before the end of our trip. Both DDs unwell. DH will most certainly want to stay until the bitter end but I can't do 3 more nights of this. AIBU to insist we leave tomorrow? We have another holiday in a few weeks and another in the school holidays

Why camp in April? Especially in the Lakes! You’ve already proved you’re bonkers. Go home.

UndermyShoeJoe · 14/04/2025 06:35

Yeah I’d leave. We camp sometimes but we always go with hook up and a heater even in August.

YANBU - camping in April is not a good idea in the UK, it's always too cold at night and weather too unreliable.

It’s fine if you are properly equipped!
Some of my favourite camping trips have involved frost on a tent. And using two down sleeping bags, one inside the other.

YANBU to go in April but YABVU to take kids and not enough bedding. Definitely go home.

Yeah, fuck that.

Wha is the fun in being cold, wet and miserable? I’m no fan of camping anyway, but in shitty weather, it’s just hell.

Where is the fun?

This^
go home, at least you will have this week to recover.

TenThousandSpoons · 14/04/2025 06:45

YANBU. Go home asap!

mounjaromarc · 14/04/2025 06:54

Credit card a premier inn near a indoor waterpark.

Londonrach1 · 14/04/2025 06:56

Go home. What's the point of you are ill, cold and wet!

ClaredeBear · 14/04/2025 06:58

I’m a pretty hard camper but that’s not enjoyable, particularly with children. Feel good about going home and making the most of the remaining days.

Ineffable23 · 14/04/2025 07:00

It's pretty expensive to have the right gear to camp in April. I have camped between the start of April and the end of October and I reckon May to very early October is okay if the weather is decent and beyond that you really need a 4 season sleeping bag.

I'd be heading home and spending as long as humanly possible in a hot bath.

FortyElephants · 14/04/2025 07:03

MumChp · 14/04/2025 06:08

It's great if you have the rightvgear. If not. No.

Edited

I'm talking about regular camping with average camping gear.

Most people don't have cold weather camping gear

TheChosenTwo · 14/04/2025 07:08

I hope you’re all packed up and on the way home now op, that sounds so bleak. Mind you u think camping is bleak at any time but throw terrible weather and poorly kids into the mix I don’t think anyone would be staying and having a jolly old time.

Hillarious · 14/04/2025 07:23

Camping in the summer when it’s wet has been great fun with the kids (with a pack of cards and supplies of tea and cake to hand) but if you’re cold and not well, that’s no fun.

Swiftie1878 · 14/04/2025 07:26

GO HOME.
It’s miserable and will put the kids off camping forever!

My sleeping bags aren’t four season which is why I use two. Alternatively you could take a sleeping bag plus a duvet, or borrow extra.

Planning for the appropriate conditions is a standard part of camping in any climate and at any time of year.

BitOutOfPractice · 14/04/2025 07:27

There is nothing better than camping with the kids in great weather.

there is nothing worse than camping with kids in crap weather.

Go home.

RareGoalsVerge · 14/04/2025 07:31

Camping is only fun in nice weather. If the weather isn't nice go to a travellodge or go home.

If DH doesn't agree, leave him and the tent and drive the kids home, and return to collect him on Friday

Setyoufree · 14/04/2025 07:32

I love camping. I'd never camp in the UK in April. Go to a premier inn or if the kids are really poorly, go home

Natsku · 14/04/2025 07:34

Disagree about camping only being fun in nice weather, I had great times camping in the rain as a child (nothing beats the sound of rain on a tent when you're snug and warm in your sleeping bag), but that was rain in summer so not freezing cold and I wasn't ill.

As a child yeah maybe - how much fun were your parents having? 😆

Rightbackinit · 14/04/2025 07:37

Could you book a Premier Inn for a night or two and travel to the lakes for your daytime activities?
The Carlisle/M6 ones have availability, family room for 4 £117 pounds a night. Might just extend your trip rather than heading straight home ( dependent on how ill the DC’s are).

Zanzara · 14/04/2025 07:38

I've just been on the Hoseasons website OP.

Limefitt Park have a perfectly nice two bedroom lodge from today for four nights for £529.

Centrally heated, natch.

My mum is an outdoors type so she was fine. My dad probably didn't come with us, his idea of hell Grin

Newmum738 · 14/04/2025 07:40

Very wise to cancel!

faerietales · 14/04/2025 07:42

Camping is horrendous regardless of the weather - why pay money to sleep on the floor, outside in a tent when you can stay at home for free? I honestly don’t get it 🤣
