To cancel camping because of the rain

Camping in the lake district, rain from now till we leave, all day and night. Not slept a wink tonight, everyone is so cold, barely slept last night (first night). Will drop to 5 then 3 degrees at night before the end of our trip. Both DDs unwell. DH will most certainly want to stay until the bitter end but I can't do 3 more nights of this. AIBU to insist we leave tomorrow? We have another holiday in a few weeks and another in the school holidays

oh no, definitely go home

greengreyblue · 14/04/2025 07:47

Go home! This is why I only ever camp at the last minute when I k ow the weather will be good. What were you thinking? Lake District in April? Come on!

SauvignonBlonk · 14/04/2025 07:53

No one wants to be ill and have to be cold in a tent.
I'm in team ‘go home’.
We love camping - not in April though. Far too cold at night.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/04/2025 07:54

This is why the lowest to the ground I will go is a central heated static

socks1107 · 14/04/2025 07:58

Yes go home. It sounds miserable. I’ve gone home from camping before because of weather, it’s amazing in the sunshine and dreadful in rain

PoppyBaxter · 14/04/2025 08:10

It sounds horrendous OP.

We had a hideous week down in Cornwall last Easter. It poured.

We were crammed into our campervan, with wet clothes draped all around us, no space and steamed up windows that we couldnt see out of, and I thought "We've got a lovely home, why are we paying for this!?"

Ahh so good to wake up to all of this encouragement. I've told DH we need to get home today. He's not thrilled but neither am I being here. It's bloody freezing and will only get colder. I am not from a camping family, he is, so I wanted to give it a bash but have made a mental note to never agree to spring camping again. He would be up for splashing the cash today to get all the right gear but I feel like shit and I'm no longer in the mood to give it a go. I said to him before we left I was worried about it being cold and should we brings duvets especially for the kids and he said no. Grrr. He will be grumpy as his holiday is cut short but definitely feel like 2 nights is enough. He tried saying I need to get used to being outdoors....

He’s only got himself to blame.
He should have listened to you!

LushLemonTart · 14/04/2025 08:24

No way would I stay and I like camping in a tent. Your dcs could end up really poorly.

morningcuppa22 · 14/04/2025 08:32

Yanbu I don't blame you sounds miserable

Ollybob · 14/04/2025 08:40

I remember going camping in may, got sunburned in the day and was absolutely freezing at night!
I'd definitely try again another time but simple things like hot water bottles in the sleeping bags at a minimum (pop them in before last wee trip) up to electric hook up where you can have heaters and other electrical bits and bobs to make it more comfy, that makes all the difference.
Camping is great for kids, just chalk this one up to experience and learn for next time. ☺️

Ablondiebutagoody · 14/04/2025 08:46

I love camping, have done it for donkey's years and was hoping to this week but we're not. It's always cold at night at Easter but wet days too just makes it beyond grim. Go home!

faerietales · 14/04/2025 08:52

Can he not stay on his own if he’s so keen?

Scottishskifun · 14/04/2025 09:31

@StJamesInfirmary a key part of being outdoorsy is knowing when your putting yourself or others at risk and knowing when to call it quits so he's not being outdoorsy he's being stubborn!

We do camp in April/May but we have 4 season sleeping bags, multiple layers, spares, waterproofs and hats and gloves.

Even in summer we take hats and gloves for everyone as the morning temperatures can be cold and we have woken up to ground frost 1st weekend of September before.

I would say try it again but with a very well set up campsite one which has an indoor area to escape to in horrible weather. With kids this makes a huge difference!

Bellshellss · 14/04/2025 17:54

I’m outdoorsy in a walk the dog for a couple of hours a day in the woods, or spend a sunny afternoon in beer garden sort of way.

Freezing my tits off in a soggy tent and having to trudge to a portaloo in the rain? Not so much.
