All shapes and sizes - what’s the fuss with a dad bod

A bit of fun for a Saturday morning inspired by a light hearted debate with friends last nights.

Whats your ideal male body type? I like tall and lean, with nice arms. Friends mainly favoured a dad bod!

@FortyElephants Since I was a teenager, I’ve always gone for men who are large-framed with a classic rugby-player build. I’m just not attracted to lean men, no idea why.

It’s good that we all have different tastes or there’d be a lot of single people!

I don’t like skinnier than me. So would prefer a dad bod over lean men. Prefer Dwayne Johnson over both.

This. But prefer Jason Momoa, but happy with Dwayne

EvenleyWitch · 13/04/2025 04:36

Is a ‘dad bod’ an out of shape chubby guy?

almostbloody50 · 13/04/2025 04:42

I love a gym bod.. tall 6ft, super toned thighs, great abs, toned chest and a muscular toned back. Male model looks but always dark hair or dark skin. DH has a dad bod now, he’s still tall and dark!

justmeandmyselfandi · 13/04/2025 04:51

I think it depends also ... I feel lean means skinny, like a swimmer, not muscular.

Summerhillsquare · 13/04/2025 06:45

SilverButton · 12/04/2025 14:38

I like tall and skinny. No beard.

Me too, and not too hairy generally.

When I said muscled and lean physique I meant muscled and/or lean. I think a well built rugby physique is also objectively attractive. Maybe I've misunderstood dad bod but in my mind it's soft, lacking muscle, lacking definition.

Lean means low body fat. It doesn't mean low muscle.

Starseeking · 13/04/2025 07:06

I’m tall and a size 16 myself, and I really like big men, as in tall and broad. Not into muscle men or gym bunnies at all. That said, I’m also not keen on a man being at a point where he gets out of breath walking up the stairs, so dad bod would have its limits for me.

Daffodilsarefading · 13/04/2025 07:09

To me dad bod means overweight and balding!
Usually wearing baggy cargo shorts in a shit colour, with random t-shirt and trainers.

Cyclingandrunning · 13/04/2025 07:11

I like tall men. My eyes will pull to them in a crowded room. For physique, I find athletic type bodies attractive. Broad shoulders too.

Personality is most important tho, but after writing this, I do think I'd struggle with a short, overweight, narrow shouldered gentleman.

Springtime97 · 13/04/2025 07:15

I like them thick… Big rugby player types.

im size 8 and 5 foot…

MesmerisingMuon · 13/04/2025 07:17

Lean or muscular. Not bothered about height as its not like you choose your height!

A "dad bod" is a turn off. It gives the impression they don't look after themselves. It gives me the ick.

Wonderwall23 · 13/04/2025 07:45

I like a bit of a dad bod in the sense that I probably like an average man's body i.e. a bit of a belly and not a gym body or a rugby body but not hugely overweight either.

I prefer over 6ft but that's because I'm tall. But not looking for really tall.

I would say I'm attracted to personality as I need to know someone a bit to fancy them. And probably face over body but that doesn't mean they have to be conventionally attractive.

Fussy eating would be the biggest turn off.

I actually really like this thread because it shows to me that there isn't a conventional 'best' look so it's sad that there might be men out there beating themselves up over what they look like.

FortyElephants · 13/04/2025 02:39

I don't understand how anyone can prefer a dad bod over a muscled and lean physique, unless it's a) just what you're used to on your partner or b) an insecurity thing of not wanting your partner to outstrip you in objective attractiveness?
I wouldn't have any issue with DH developing a dad bod because I love and am attracted to him regardless. But I wouldn't choose that from a line up of potential dates if I was single.

I just like big lumberjack, bear-like men!

And I'm a gym bunny and fitness fanatic, so no worries about being outcompeted!

Doggymummar · 13/04/2025 07:50

Jarvis Cocker , Indie kid. Probably old rocker now as I am 55, not 18, reluctantly

PoppyBaxter · 13/04/2025 07:53

I think this thread shows that 'dad bod' is the equivalent term to 'curvy' for women.

One person thinks curvy means being a size 18. Another thinks curvy means means being a toned hourglass size 10.

'Dad bod' to me still means a guy in probably the top 10% of fitness. Very strong. Can run a good 10k time. But doesn't have visible abs.

SugarMusic · 13/04/2025 07:53

I'm an Alan Ritchson / Henry Cavill girl. Tall, broad, muscled.

Daffodilsarefading · 13/04/2025 08:13

I also like hair. Harry Styles type. In fact a Harry Styles body and personality. When I was younger I was always attracted to slim, toned men who weren’t afraid to show their sense of style. David Sylvian, John Lone, David Bowie type. Quite androgynous looking. I think in general men have become more homogenous looking. All wearing the same boring clothes and shaving their heads or having fades. I can’t find anything attractive about a man in a grubby tracksuit.

ApolloandDaphne · 13/04/2025 08:20

I like tall and slender. Long legs and pert bum. That is my DH. He likes curvy women which is just are well!

uhOhOP · 13/04/2025 08:51

kalokagathos · 12/04/2025 18:41

I find dad bod disgusting and just love mental and physical discipline. That shows me you’re in control of your impulses. I love tall and broad shoulders. Must be strong.

Seriously? "Disgusting"?

Yes I’ve always thought dad bod is good arms, legs and shoulders but having a bit of a paunch. Someone who can play a game of football or rugby at the weekend but doesn’t live in the gym.

I wouldn’t use it as a euphemism for fat. In the same way I would call myself curvy, but had to stop on OLD because people use that for fat.

Jennalong · 13/04/2025 09:08

I'm not very tall so definitely not shorter than me , but not very tall either . We'd look odd together.
Not a big gym fanatic , as I'd feel obliged to go also .
Dad bods very welcome as you can be yourself as well .

Lorlorlorikeet · 13/04/2025 09:09

So ‘dad bod’ is a bit fat? Why would anyone prefer that over someone fairly muscular?

I like rugby player types. Big arms. Big shoulders. Really not into the visceral fat. 🤣

Lorlorlorikeet · 13/04/2025 09:15

There may be, but I’ve definitely come across far more overconfident mediocre men than insecure ones.

Now if only we could extend this ^ generosity of spirit to our own sex (men won’t) because we sure as fuck do beat ourselves (and others) up, for not conforming to ideals.
