All shapes and sizes - what’s the fuss with a dad bod

A bit of fun for a Saturday morning inspired by a light hearted debate with friends last nights.

Whats your ideal male body type? I like tall and lean, with nice arms. Friends mainly favoured a dad bod!

OP posts:
Iwannakeepondancing · 12/04/2025 19:07

Broad shoulders, nice muscular arms, toned/flat stomach. I don’t like hair really. Luckily my DH has this physique!

BeMintFatball · 12/04/2025 19:12

When I was very young males had to look like they could run a 4 minute mile. That didn’t work out so good.

changed type mid twenties. Met husband who has a Dad bod. Funnily enough he had been super skinny very good county runner. So had we met earlier he still would have been my type. Been married nearly 30 years

BruFord · 12/04/2025 19:12

Broad shoulders and physical strength. I’ve never been attracted to lean, skinny men though, even if they’re muscular.

My DH is broad shouldered and very strong, seeing him move furniture or pick up a box that I can’t shift makes me weak at the knees. 🤣

KimberleyClark · 12/04/2025 19:15

I find beer bellies a real turnoff.

Dillydollydingdong · 12/04/2025 19:20

Not too tall, nice hairy arms, legs and chest.
Nice cuddly little tum. Mmmm

Zinnialime · 12/04/2025 19:23

I don't get the fuss over dad bods. I like lean and muscular, nice arms and pecs, not too tall as I don't like being towered over. DH meets my requirements.

Love a toned stomach on a man. 😍 ‘Dad bod’ suggests to me a soft midriff, love handles or even - horror of horrors - a beer belly. Ick all round.

I like sporty, toned men. Prefer skinny to overweight.. very keen on muscular thighs from cycling or running. Strong preference for a beard or a mustache. Great to the wide and varied taste of women on this site.

I said the same upthread. I genuinely don’t get it. I would have thought most women want a partner who is healthy and oozes vitality and longevity, so they can be around to bring up offspring. A soft, large-ish waist is the opposite of that.

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 12/04/2025 19:35

Tall and slim/skinny. No dad bods.

oakley2010 · 12/04/2025 19:36

tall and big, i am 5
foot and 40kg and am attracted to big men, tall and big frame's

Game0fCrones · 12/04/2025 19:43

Rugby player type or a dad bod. I like a man with a bit of excess weight if its accompanied by good muscle mass too.

Has to be bigger than me when I wear 3" heels, so 5' 10" or over, with broad shoulders, must have size 10 feet or bigger (mine are an 8). Ex has size 14 feet! 😮

I find a thick neck particularly attractive and I admire a man with a large nose too.

BruFord · 12/04/2025 19:44

My attraction to physical strength is definitely something primal!

My DH can easily pick me up and take me off to bed…all of my partners have been much taller and stronger than me. 🤣

Thank goodness we’re all different!

MidoriNoRingo · 12/04/2025 19:49

My husband is tall and skinny but muscular. I call it heroin strong 🤣

But I also like really big men. Not fat, but muscular but no defined. Just big solid men like Til Lindeman, Keefe from the Righteous gemstones

Daffodilsarefading · 12/04/2025 19:52

Slim and toned.

ItGhoul · 12/04/2025 19:52

My ideal male body would be lean, flat stomach, defined muscle but not bulky. A Michaelango’s David / track athlete type body. Or broad and muscular like Henry Cavill.

Anything from slim and wiry to a cuddly bear-like type is fine with me though. A dad bod is good. I don’t like men who look weak and/or flabby, though, regardless of how fat or thin they are.

Chest hair is a must.

BlumminFreezin · 12/04/2025 20:06

I do not find a “6 pack” on a man attractive at all and “slim, muscly ” men give me the ick.

Agree. A really defined 6 pack or really defined biceps or, the worst...veiny arms 🤢

I don't find overweight men or beer bellies attractive. I think of an attractive 'dad bod' as being a tall, broad man who's strong and fit, with a flattish stomach but no defined sticky-out 6 pack. Someone who can pick you up and carry you but is relaxed enough to enjoy a Chinese on a Friday night because their figure never enters their mind.

I generally find men who 'go to the gym' to pump iron or whatever unattractive in the same way as I find a man who straightens his hair unattractive. It's just a bit try-hard, gives me the mild ick.

Dh has huge calves and strong arms from knocking down the wall in the garden, from carrying our new washing machine inside on his own, from building the shed from scratch himself, from hiking miles with the dog - and other such manly endeavours which I find very attractive 😁

PoppyBaxter · 12/04/2025 20:20

Tall, dad bod, strong, heavy facial stubble.

By 'dad bod', I mean an Aiden in Sex and the City type. Not ripped - a regular body, but fit, big and strong.

JHound · 12/04/2025 20:21

I don’t have an ideal except not too skinny and not (too) fat.

Also not too muscular / defined. It’s nice to look at (like Chris Hemsworth in Thor or Michael B Jordan as Creed) but I would not want to date a man with a body like that.

That said I do like the physique of the guy currently playing Reacher!😂

I am pretty sure men with largish waists live long enough to help raise offspring…

BruFord · 12/04/2025 20:31

@BlumminFreezin

“manly endeavours,” I love it! 🤣

I know what you mean though. One of friend’s DH is fitness-obsessed (I’m not being derogatory, he really is) and I’ve never thought of him as particularly physically attractive. Yes, he’s very muscular but it’s kind of too much, iyswim.

His obsessive personality is the real turnoff though, I’ve never been comfortable with that type of man. Luckily we’re all different and he suits my friend!

Riversof0tter5 · 12/04/2025 23:53

Squishy best for hugs.

dontcryformeargentina · 13/04/2025 01:43

No dad bod for me..I like them fit / army style fitness body , not a bodybuilder ..

FortyElephants · 13/04/2025 02:39

I don't understand how anyone can prefer a dad bod over a muscled and lean physique, unless it's a) just what you're used to on your partner or b) an insecurity thing of not wanting your partner to outstrip you in objective attractiveness?
I wouldn't have any issue with DH developing a dad bod because I love and am attracted to him regardless. But I wouldn't choose that from a line up of potential dates if I was single.

Because people like different things? It's not much to understand, really.
