Just finished watching it for the first time and I can’t stop thinking about the final scene. Tony was definitely killed, wasn’t he? Anyone up for a chat about it?

"You probably don't even hear it when it happens, right?"

For sure killed.

PippaXo · 11/04/2025 13:46

I think that the writer has left it up in the air as to what happened to Tony and his family. I hated the ending as I would prefer to know definitely!

Lottapianos · 11/04/2025 13:47

Yes, completely agree with your theory. It's a brilliant show, although got a bit baggy in later seasons. The finale is a stunning piece of television. Apparently loads of people thought their TVs were on the blink because the screen stays black for so long at the end!

tfu · 11/04/2025 13:54

I just finished watching it all too - it’s fantastic. I particularly enjoyed the final few episodes when everything is caving in. Majestic, but brutal

Almahart · 11/04/2025 13:55

Definitely yes. Such a brilliant ending

coxesorangepippin · 11/04/2025 14:37

Oh god yeah it's amazing

Love Carmella in particular

coxesorangepippin · 11/04/2025 14:38

Also, Pine Barrens episode, season three

Sidebeforeself · 11/04/2025 14:39

This is quite simply one of the best TV programmes ever made.

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 11/04/2025 14:40

Such an iconic series - with such interesting characters... Adrianna..Tony..

FinnJuhl · 11/04/2025 14:47

I don't know if YABU yet. I am trying to watch Mad Men and not really finding it gripping. Maybe I should switch to the Sopranos?? I think even in the last 15 or so years, the pace of TV has changed, plus my concentration span has deteriorated massively, thanks to a decade of smartphone use. Am glad I watched The Wire when it first came out - I just wouldn't have the sticking power now.

IveGotAnUnusuallyLargePelvisISwear · 11/04/2025 14:48

I finished watching it for the first time recently too. Can’t believe I had waited so long to watch it. Some episodes weren’t as good as others but I like that it sort of lulls you into liking a character/thinking that they’re not as bad as the others and then bam, that character goes on to do something terrible in the next scene or episode. Even the ones who aren’t killers like Carmela- yeah she’s only a housewife and doesn’t get involved but she knows what’s going on and where the money comes from, she just doesn’t care as long as she can wander around her McMansion dripping in diamonds.

There’s some fucking hilarious lines as well and some very satisfying death scenes for some really heinous bastards.

SeventeenClovesOfGarlic · 11/04/2025 14:49

@CarmellaSopranosKitchen your username 😄

Doingtheboxerbeat · 11/04/2025 14:55

I watched it during lockdown, but it's a hard watch it you are sensitive to racism and homophobia - slurs galore.
But the Pine Barrons episode gave me a ab workout like nothing has before, for how funny it was.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 11/04/2025 15:11

You should watch "Wise Guy: David Chase and the Sopranos" if you have a chance. I thought it was fascinating as David Chase grew up with the Mafia as a backdrop to his life.
I thought the last Sopranos episode Made in America was excellent. Obviously there is the double meaning of the word Made, but Tony is surrounded in the diner by all the references to the American Dream as well as Don't Stop Believing being played on the jukebox - also about the American Dream. There's so much going on in the background of each episode of the Sopranos, you could watch it on repeat and still see new clever details.
I'd recommend Breaking Bad if you've not watched it before and you like the Sopranos. Also about the moral decline of an interesting character and terrific acting.

CarmellaSopranosKitchen · 11/04/2025 15:12

The creation of the characters are soooooo good. I've watched it through twice. Interesting how they make people who do awful things likeable in parts...epic plot twists.

CheeseNPickle3 · 11/04/2025 15:18

Yes, he definitely died. I didn't know what was going to happen before I watched the last episode, but I'd heard there were people confused about the ending. The series was from Tony's pov for the most part so when he's gone - that's it. Made perfect sense to me.

I also "got" the thing that they did with the bear and I never normally see those sorts of things. Looked it up and there's stuff about other animals like the ducks and things.

Is that when they are lost in the woods? Made me cry laughing.

GreenSalon2 · 11/04/2025 15:21

I watched it when it first came out. A friend and I used to share a vhs recording of weekly episodes that’s how long ago it was!
ive watched many of the other tv series listed as the greatest of all time but The Sopranos has always stayed top for me. So last year, I rewatched it all the way through again with 17 year old DS with some trepidation in case it wasn’t as good as I remembered. Wow!

It has definitely aged and I think things like the degradation of women and the casual racism of the characters would still be there but shown differently if made today. That’s a good thing imo. But the writing and story arcs remain sublime.

Plus I’d forgotten that one of my favourite characters was responsible for the death of my absolute favourite- Adrianna.

And my conclusion second time around is that Tony was whacked.

GreenSalon2 · 11/04/2025 15:25

@FinnJuhl I know sometime people describe tv shows as a slow burn whenever they are really just mediocre but Mad Men remains in my top tv shows. Maybe stick with it a bit longer? Is a big time commitment I know. But again character development and story arcs are excellent.

i was late to this and watched it for the first time about six years ago, initially reluctant to view as didn’t think it was my kind of thing. But after two episodes I was hooked .. I binged watch it, in fact I actually had to call in sick after the last episode as I’d cried so much .. actually looking back maybe that wasn’t healthy lol
You’ve now made me want to watch it again!

Alllll · 11/04/2025 15:50

For those who agreed he died at the end, who do you think did it? And why? In front of his family in revenge for Phil’s in front of his is my guess.

101jobs · 11/04/2025 15:57

One of my favourites TV series for sure. Excellent, excellent, excellent!

Infact, reading all your comments is tempting me to watch it all over again.

I hated the ending though, even if I do believe he was killed, I just like a definite ending in everything I watch.

Paulie had some great one-liners, he had me in stitches.

Fuzziduck · 11/04/2025 16:19

The writers did say a couple of years ago that yes, the ending was death for Tony.
Such a good series, we’ve watched many times.

Lottapianos · 11/04/2025 16:23

'I know sometime people describe tv shows as a slow burn whenever they are really just mediocre but Mad Men remains in my top tv shows.'

I absolutely love Mad Men too. Jon Hamm as Don Draper is one of the most gorgeous men to ever appear on screen. Wonderful script and performances all round. I love how steadily it's paced and how very melancholy the whole thing is
