To think face creams make no difference? Or am I using the wrong ones?!

I’ve tried a lot. I still look old and haggard and the lines are still very much there (I know they won’t go entirely with a cream). I’m 42. What do people make of face creams?!

I’d say genetics, stress ( environment) and a skin care routine.

I’m 55, and I lived on the equator for 17 years. I was a bit slack with SPF but didn’t really sit in the sun. I always wore sunglasses and a hat a lot of the time. Despite this, I don’t think I have a lot of wrinkles. I have 1 Marriott line I hate, but no one else can see it apparently. I don’t have any lines under my eyes. People tell me I have great skin.

I think for me a lot of it is genes. Both my parents are Irish, and whilst they have pale skin and get burnt in the sun, they look very young. My siblings look very young, and my brothers, 60+ have thick hair with only a bit of grey. I didn’t have to dye my hair until 48, and the grey is just here and there, not all over.

I think I’m lucky and so I take care of my skin religiously to try and keep it that way.

Just wanted to add that I don’t rate a lot of face creams, and think they are snake oil as someone said down thread. However, I bought a Crème De La Mer set on offer to give it a go, and FFS it was fabulous. The eye cream is a keeper and some of it just made my skin gorgeous.

Oh gawd 🙄

How can you tell it's not working?

The only way to be sure is to just use products on one side of your face, then you can see the difference it makes

I think the most important thing is using spf all year round. Having said that, I use everything going and have many steps in my routine.

My husband and his brother I think demonstrate the benefits of looking after one’s skin. They are only 18 months apart and very alike in looks. My husband (the younger), has used moisturiser with spf since his 20s, he also uses a night cream. His brother thinks this is ridiculous. The difference between their skin is huge. The brother has really aged skin with deep lines and broken capillaries. My husband still looks very young and plump of skin at 56.

The expensive creams smell nice and leave a glow so that makeup looks good. I do t think they actually change your skin that much.
