To think face creams make no difference? Or am I using the wrong ones?!

I’ve tried a lot. I still look old and haggard and the lines are still very much there (I know they won’t go entirely with a cream). I’m 42. What do people make of face creams?!

First with an oil or balm to take off makeup surface dirt, using a cloth to wipe it off, second with a foaming or cream cleanser to deep clean

Sounds like normal cleaning to me.

I think it's more to do with genes than anything else. My mum is 80, has virtually no lines at all. She goes out in the sun without sunscreen, uses standard Nivea cleanser and basic moisturiser.

My skin is similar and I have far fewer lines than most of my friends. I do now use sunscreen if I'm out in the sun on holiday etc but don't use it daily.

How can an 80 year old have no lines??

I was sceptical but been using cream with retinol every night and good day cream with sunscreen and seems to have really helped

I second this. Sunscreen is the most important thing you can do for your skin to keep it young looking and wrinkle free.

RaraRachael · 11/04/2025 10:07

I have rosacea so cover that up with a CC cream. I'm lucky at 62 to have virtually no lines of wrinkles so just use cheap stuff.

It's ge epic as my mother and sister were/are the same

greengreyblue · 12/04/2025 08:03

I don’t believe anyone post 60 has no lines or wrinkles unless you’ve had Botox / fillers or you’re not white. Just a lifetime of smiling creates crows feet and laughter lines. I’m 54 and don’t have wrinkled cheeks or anything but I do have lines at the side of my eyes, a few fine ones underneath and on my forehead plus 11s. Now I’m starting to notice marionette lines . I’ve never smoked, wear spf and look after my skin. It’s normal aging.

Augustus40 · 12/04/2025 08:05

I am 61 with very few lines. Good genes definitely helps.

greengreyblue · 12/04/2025 08:08

Tiny fine lines around eyes. Jowls just a tiny bit.

arcticpandas · 12/04/2025 08:12

It's snake oil. Any moisturiser will do to hydrate and spf during the day. Night nothing : I let my skin breathe.

It's funny when you see all the botoxed/fillers ladies doing commercials for skin cream🙄

Merryoldgoat · 12/04/2025 08:15

A decent routine and good products can transform your skin.

I have been using Estée Lauder products since I got some for Christmas. I do use good skincare as a rule but felt EL was overpriced so never tried it.

My skin has become amazing - softer, fewer soft lines abs scarring had almost disappeared.

I’m 47 and have significantly better skin now than in my 30s. I’m lucky genetically in that I don’t really have any wrinkles but still look in my 40s. It’s not able looking younger, rather ‘better’.

It’s entirely possible to not really have lines into 60s. Genes and ethnicity play a massive role as well as how you’ve cared for your skin.

My mother’s family are of West Indian extraction (a very mixed pot of black, French, Portuguese, Indian, and Scottish)

My aunts in their 60s are routinely mistaken for my sisters, one was mistaken for my newborns mother when 52.

That’s ageing! When people say I have no lines I wish they’d be more honest. It’s so subjective. As you say it’s not just about lines. I think I’m good on that front, not many lines when my face is not animated but there’s definitely a gradual shift south shall we say. 😂 You’re either a hollower or a sagger. I’m in the latter category.

janeandmarysmum · 12/04/2025 08:56

It's the act of applying the cream and massaging it in that makes the difference, rather than the cream itself.

Merryoldgoat · 12/04/2025 08:58

The conversation around skincare is like weight loss injections.

Those who either can manage their weight with ease because they aren’t constantly hungry, because they find it easy through genetics etc just think those of us on jabs are lazy or greedy or both.

Like those blessed with good skin which they can maintain with Nivea and an soap think the rest of us are talking bollocks when we describe the routines we have to use to maintain decent looking skin.

I had adult acne after teens with literally not a blemish even though I lived on booze, sugar, and routinely slept in my makeup. The acne was a shock and took real work and research to sort it out.

winterdarkness · 12/04/2025 09:09

I think consistency is key. I’m 54 and I don’t have wrinkles and my skin is good. I started cleansing, moisturising and using Spf at 13, including pinching my mother’s Estée Lauder night drops. I have probably not gone to bed a single day in my life without following my routine. As I’ve got older, I’ve added better creams, more serums etc but the key has always been consistency

ChristmasFluff · 12/04/2025 09:19

I always used to think there was no difference, but I always apply my face cream with my right hand (I don't use hand cream).

The lines on my left hand are deeper now than on my right, there are more of them, and the skin texture is different. (I'm 60)

I used Oil of Ulay from about age 14, and switched to Boots No 7 when Protect and Perfect came out - I've moved through Lift and Luminate and now Restore and Renew.

I never cleansed/moisturised at night until I was about 50!!

I do have great genetics, and I avoided the sun for much of my llife (goth) and have always used SPF. My skin is great for my age, although granted most people probably think that about their skin!

I have some AHAs (REN Ready Steady Glow) , glycolic acid, hylaruonic acid but always forget which ones to use when and which must not be used with each other so they tend to stay at the back of my skincare drawer! Any simple advice please?

Simple rule;
AM treat with Vit c and or niacinimade and or HA, then moisturise and spf

PM retinol, moisturise.

Eyes AM and PM

Each of those ingredients treats a different type of skin issue so it depends on what you are concerned about.

How odd. I always use both hands when appying face cream.

lunaemma · 12/04/2025 10:47

Genetics is definitely a huge part, my dad washes his face with whatever foams up and thinks carrot oil is SPF despite being a redhead
he easily looks a decade younger and didn’t have many lines at all

RaraRachael · 12/04/2025 11:37

I'm 62, white and have no visible lines. People often think I'm a lot younger.
My mother and sister are the same. My son is 31 and often gets I'd.
I have never had any "interventions"
