To think face creams make no difference? Or am I using the wrong ones?!

I’ve tried a lot. I still look old and haggard and the lines are still very much there (I know they won’t go entirely with a cream). I’m 42. What do people make of face creams?!

I was noticing that my skin was looking really dry and blotchy. I'm 52. What has made a significant difference is to cleanse my face in the evening and then moisturise then in bed I apply vaseline all over my face. I go to bed shiny and a bit sticky but wake up with lovely soft healthy looking skin!

And it's cheap as chips!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 10/04/2025 19:17

Nothing can improve lines apart from Botox.Skin texture maybe but not lines.

I've started double cleanse, toner and retinol in the evening, cleanser, Vit c, moisturiser and sun cream in the morning and have noticed a massive difference. Less bumps, no spots and my skin feels clearer. I keep asking my mum and dh am I different because it feels huge to me. But not to them 😂

What is double cleanse?

Augustus40 · 10/04/2025 19:25

It means you cleane twice evenings before doing toner etc

VanCleefArpels · 10/04/2025 19:40

It means you cleane twice evenings before doing toner etc

First with an oil or balm to take off makeup surface dirt, using a cloth to wipe it off, second with a foaming or cream cleanser to deep clean

ButchCassidysSundanceKid · 10/04/2025 19:40

I've started using coconut oil to cleanse my face on an evening. The hard pressed stuff. Smear it on my face with a warm damp flannel, then resoak the flannel in hot water and hold over my face before wiping. Honestly works a charm, and it's dirty cheap. Then I use hyaluronic acid and vit C serum, along with SPF in the day and a standard night cream at night. 38 and my skin generally looks good. I do however get Botox for the fine lines on my forehead!

kkneat · 10/04/2025 20:34

I’m 56 and always get compliments about my skin. My dad had very clear skin and barely any winkles. I use s cleansing wipe at night and hsve always used a Clinique moisturiser. I have very fair skin so always use spf. I think it’s largely genetics.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 10/04/2025 20:36

They might my skin look a bit more plump and youthful - but they can’t fix lines or sag

You need tweakments or the knife for that

menopausalfart · 10/04/2025 20:37

The only cream that has worked for my aging skin is one that I get via prescription. I've tried a vast array of other products that just didn't work.

GreyCarpet · 10/04/2025 20:44

I clean my face with coconut oil or EV olive oil and use a cheap nivea day cream for sensitive skin.

Drink plenty of water and take collagen peptides in my morning coffee. I eat healthily and well.

I'm 50 and have very little in the way of lines or wrinkles.

I'm not going to claim to look younger than I am but I do look like like a 50 yo with good skin!

When did you start? If you just started you’ve started way too late.

Sucker

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 10/04/2025 21:07

Go dermatologist and get yourself some strong retinol stuff.

tootsfan · 11/04/2025 06:04

Another vote for good old fashioned Nivea. Cheap as chips and very effective.

ive tried lots of expensive creams and serums but resorted to Nivea to clear a patch of dry skin … and it’s brilliant stuff

Now I just wash my face with Simple face wash, put on Nivea and I’m very happy with the results, day or night

whatcanthematterbe81 · 11/04/2025 06:09

Tertinoin is all you need. And SPF in the morning. My skin has gone from old and dull to (even if I say so myself) perfect!!

TeaIsNice · 11/04/2025 06:23

I am a big fan of the Ordinary - have the full lot (too many complicated names) and double cleanse with Garnier VitC cleanser. That and at least 2L of water daily.

Yellowsunbeams · 11/04/2025 06:48

I am in my 60s. I do have excellent skin for my age. Now I'm not foolish enough to say that I don't look a day over 35 but I do look significantly younger. I still have slightly oily skin - it's a myth that all older women have dry skin. In my twenties, a dermatologist told me that moisturisers would just make my skin break out and he was right. He also said I should stay out of the sun as much as possible.

You might as well save your money for professional help. A discrete dab of filler, a little tasteful botox and prescription strength trentinoin are things that really work - not with half your face totally frozen and bulk filler every where. Moisturisers can help your skin retain moisture and makenit feel more comfortable but no amount of moisturiser is going to lift sagging skin or make lines disappear. Alphahydroxy acids might have a mild effect on fine lines but I'd rather take my chances with trentinoin (and sun block).

I got magic cream for Christmas and it was lovely but now it’s finished. Too pricey for me and not enough of a difference from cheaper stuff. Revolution Pro do a reasonable dupe.

Everyone always repeats this mantra, ime they are very different. CT Magic Cream is miles ahead for me - results wise- way better.

Boots serum is good, if I run out of it I notice difference very quickly

Which one do you use?

Cotswoldmama · 11/04/2025 07:46

It's hard to know if it's genetics or cream but I'm not going to stop using creams incase! I use Tretinoin nightly from skin and me, code for free month just p&p if anyone is interested! I cleanse with a balm which I find gentler and more moisturiser in then in the morning I use vitamin c serum moisturiser with spf and then spf 50 cream.
People say I look younger than I am, I don't think I do but maybe good for my age, but I think overall maybe I do just because I'm slim and petite. I have a few wrinkles on my forehead but none are that deep. My dad has great skin so could be genetic, although my younger sister is much more wrinkled but that could be because she lives in Australia

Which one do you use?

I use Restore and Renew. Better than Elemis serums they smell too chemical and much cheaper.

Onlythemother · 11/04/2025 08:01

I'm in my 50s and what makes the most difference to my skin is a glycolic acid toner every day, it brightens and evens my skin.
I can tell the difference if I stop using it and then start again.

I alternate any moisturiser, never stick to one, have tried expensive through to superdrug brands and don't have a favourite.

Genevieva · 11/04/2025 08:06

My skin does not like retinol. It also causes sun spots apparently. I do like Liz Earl Skin Repair Light Cream, but not for anti aging properties. I just like it. I have light hair and skin, so I get sunburn easily, which is bad for premature aging.

Yes and it’s miles more expensive too! Not attainable for many.

I can remember a dermatologist on tv years ago saying that it’s all mostly expensive and clever marketing. The only thing you need to do is moisturise with a cream containing spf to guard from sun damage. But ‘wrinkle creams’ are just a waste of money. He explained the only thing that gets rid of lines is something that fills out that line from underneath. ie fillers and Botox to paralyse a wrinkle causing muscle.
I have had filler once a year for about 8 years and have no lines. I do swear by the spf moisturiser though and never wear make up except a bit of lippy.

While I find the idea of filler quite scary, I have to say I agree with this.

I’ve done the fancy serums, the Vit C, the retinol, the acids, the double cleansing…. While ithe routines made my skin look a bit clearer, they haven’t prevented long term ageing, of the saggy jowls, droopy mouth, thinning hair and gaining weight variety anyway.

I cleanse, moisturise, use spf and ocasional botox and that’s it. I focus on daily walking, yoga and eating well as they will make more difference than any fancy cream will.

MrsSlimShady · 11/04/2025 08:12

I don’t think there is one magic cream. I’ve tried loads. Most of it is fancy packaging and marketing.

It’s a combo of genes, low stress, what you eat, and a good skin routine of cleansing and helping it along with face products whether that be Nivea or La Mer.

If I religiously cleansed and moisturised with Vaseline for 7 decades, my skin would probably be better than someone who has spent 20k over their lifetime on skincare.
