To expect barman to know what a lemon and lime is.

Couldn't believe it today. Had this drink loads with no problem.

Barman had no clue what a lemon and lime was. Gave up and ordered something else, a coffee instead.

I've been a barmaid in my time and you're the kind of customer I hated dealing with. Entitled and snobby.

😂 what for asking for a drink I'd ordered plenty of times in other pubs and never had any problem.

I’ve only heard this drink called lime and lemonade. I’m nearly 50.

I had a friend who used to call squash 'diluting juice' or sometimes just juice. I wish I could remember where she was from...

Scotland?

It's lemonade with lime juice added. It's a standard non-alcoholic drink. Two people I went to the pub with last night had it with no problems. A barkeep who doesn't know what this drink is must be pretty ignorant.

Oh my word.

Most people serving drinks at a bar aren't doing it as a profession and they didn't have to sit an exam first.

People learn as they go. Once some shirty punter has pointed out that lemon doesn't actually mean lemon, they'll be OK next time I'm sure.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 10/04/2025 03:48

I’ll have a Babycham please 🦌

CuriousGeorge80 · 10/04/2025 04:23

It’s my go to non-alcoholic drink in a bar or pub, but I am explicit by what I mean (lemonade with lime cordial) as loads of people don’t seem to know it.

In Australia even when you are that explicit they give it to you with soda in my experience 😂

In my experience lime cordial with soda is more commonly drunk than lime cordial with lemonade.

Do people still drink lager and lime these days?

Lemon and lime is not clear. Lime and lemonade is what it’s called. You probably annoyed him with your incredulous tone then he couldn’t be arsed with listening to your explanation.

Ridiculous. It’s his job! You don’t get to not be “arsed”.

Yeah, God forbid anyone should expect to be able to order a simple drink.

As far as bar staff are concerned there is a special place in hell for people who order hot drinks in pub, especially tea.

Most places now have a automatic coffee machine but the tea is a faff and in the time it takes you make one, you have a queue of people all of whom you could have served in the time it took to make one fucking tea. At home, bag in cup, water in, take out bag, add milk. At work.....tea pot, milk jug, sugar sticks blah blah.

No, you want tea go to a cafe. You want coffee? Fuck off to Costa. Sorry but there it is.

Just a mad suggestion, but maybe these pubs could take it off the menu rather than blaming customers for ordering it?

Movingonup313 · 10/04/2025 07:21

I would assume it was water with a slice of lemon and slice of lime.

RampantIvy · 10/04/2025 07:34

I think the confusion is in the name.
Lemon and lime doesn't sound like lemonade and lime.

I used to drink St Clements a pp referred to.

Londonrach1 · 10/04/2025 07:36

That's strange. Order it a lot as so refreshing and never had anyone not know what it is. It's a bar staple I'd say.

Why would you come on a thread, nine pages in, where a huge number of participants have already said that they have never heard "lemon and lime" used to refer to lemonade with lime cordial, and say this?
Do you just read the OP and then comment on it without reading any of the responses?

Lemonade with lime cordial is, but not under the name "lemon and lime". It has pretty much been established that this seems to be a minority, probably regional term that most people, at a quick estimate, have not heard used.

sakura06 · 10/04/2025 07:58

Lemon and lime is my favourite soft drink!

I once ordered a Tia Maria with orange juice, but the barman gave me orange squash cordial undiluted 🫣

Prittt · 10/04/2025 08:21

I've never had this or known anyone who has (interested to try it though as a variation to my usual lime and soda).

My impression these days is that people don't tend to have/ask for drinks where the bartender is expected to know what they are. I was a bartender back in the days when the request for a 'long vodka' was frequent - I would very much expect to have to explain it if I ask for one of those now. At least you didn't ask for a virgin long vodka with no bitters...I would've associated it with what you wanted quicker though!

Wild guess here but I'm assuming she's talking about your overall attitude rather than you asking for a drink....

KewTitles · 10/04/2025 07:14

Yeah, God forbid anyone should expect to be able to order a simple drink.

Again it's the overall attitude that's the problem, not the ordering of a drink.

OneQuirkyPanda · 10/04/2025 09:33

I order it all the time, I just ask for lemonade with lime cordial and never had any issues.

LegoLivingRoom · 10/04/2025 09:56

SunshineCatcher · 09/04/2025 23:39

Oooh I used to love a vodka with lemonade and lime, but that was back in the early 2000s, so it’s probably old fashioned now!

Vodka and lime was my main drink in the early 2000s. Bright green and like paint stripper. The one time it arrived with lemonade in I sent it back. Feeling very nostalgic now.

Needmorelego · 10/04/2025 10:57

Does anyone remember the thread where someone claimed they had never heard of lemonade - as in the basic fizzy stuff like R-whites lemonade !
Claimed they had never heard of it or seen it in a supermarket EVER in their life 😂😂😂😂

KewTitles · 10/04/2025 11:31

I remember asking a waitress in the US once for a vodka and coke and she spent what felt like 20 minutes dating, “What, together? In the same glass?! I never heard of that before! I never heard of that…”

Love, I didn’t ask you to write a dissertation on it - I just want you to pour it!

RampantIvy · 10/04/2025 11:33

OneQuirkyPanda · 10/04/2025 09:33

That is self explanatory unlike just asking for a lemon and lime.
