New job offer but 3 months notice for own job and on waiting list for surgery

Hello! Just seeking some opinions/advice. I am moving back to Ireland. Just got offered a part-time job as a counsellor in an addiction service - 3 days per week - I want to semi-retire but can't afford to and this is a half way postion. However, my job in the NHS requires 3 months notice, but the counselling service in Ireland will only wait until 23 June for me to start not 7th July. Also, I am on a waiting list for ankle surgery - both ankles, one at a time - so not sure even about taking a permanent job - I'm 59, so permanent jobs are not easy to come by, especially in Ireland. Not sure what to do. Any advice/opinions would be really helpful.

One challenge at a time and the first is notice period. you can speak to your manager to see if you can negotiate the final two weeks - or see if you can roll in some holiday. That feels reasonable, especially if it involves semi retirement and a relocation

Just as 100percenthagitude said. It’s not much less then 3 months, so there is a good chance that your employers will agree. If you have accrued any holiday, you can put this at the end of your notice period and effectively leave when your holiday starts.

How would ankle surgery work in Ireland? Would you lose eligibility if not resident in the U.K.? How important is it to you to wait for the surgery, compared with your perfect part-time job in your perfect location? All these are subjective. Only you can decide.

Whenever this has happened to me I’ve told my employer my new job said I can start on X date at the very latest so unfortunately I can only stay until X date. It’s always been fine so far☺️ congratulations on the new job! X
