I know they are all sent in good faith etc and I don't blame my friends for forwarding them but why do people start them in the first place? What do they gain?

There are a few about girls having to be careful on nights out because of different things that have happened. And so the list goes on

i agree mcdreamy... even when friends send them with the best intentions
-there's more than a whiff of scaremongering - i find them annoying and slightly insulting -
but then again - i've been known to send back chainmails to people. [grumble]

I always send a link to Snopes back to people.

Send all your friends a link to a site like Snopes and tell them you'd appreciate them checking out these emails before they send them on.
