To think Lucy Connolly has been made an example of?

Have any of you read this article about Lucy Connolly who tweeted inflammatory comments following the Southport murders? I have to admit that at the time I was fully supportive of having her locked up, with the key thrown away. But reading this article made me view it all a little differently. Surely she has done her time?

I agree. She posted a disgusting tweet, but that’s not what caused the anger and violence.

Also, thugs who commit real physical crimes, rape and other violence, especially against women, often get away with trivial sentences.

Men have got away with killing women by claiming it was just rough sex that went wrong. Stupid offensive words should not carry a heavier penalty.

Haven't we got 40 thousand people on MI5 terror watch lists in this country? How many of them have posted incendiary things/incitement? You don't get put on those lists for nothing.

Mylegishangingoff · 07/04/2025 09:34

Yeah, what a silly woman being scared. It's not like feral racists were roaming the streets trying to set fire to asylum centres with 100s of people inside or anything.

Edited

Without knowing her motivations I can't comment. Was she equally scared of machete gangs or other violent mobs being whipped up?

Maitri108 · 07/04/2025 09:25

She was sentenced according to the guidelines for the crime she pled guilty to. It should be 2-3 years. She only got to serve 40%.

Actually the starting point was 3 years(no one is talking about that though), but due to various factors it got reduced to 31 months, out of which she’ll only serve 12ish months(again , no one is talking about that either).

HPFA · 07/04/2025 09:40

You've got to laugh at all the people saying things like "we've all posted Tweets we regret".

Yes we have. Usually because we've revealed things about ourselves that we wish we hadn't, or we've said something more harshly than we intended.

You don't "mistakenly" Tweet something that calls for innocent people to be burnt to death for a crime they had absolutely nothing to do with. You don't even have the thought in your head to start with. If the killings had been committed by a white person living in a terraced street she wouldn't have Tweeted that rows of terraced housing in white areas should be burned down would she?

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 07/04/2025 09:40

Boredofbeinganadult · 07/04/2025 09:36

So you think she should be taking up a prison space over an abuser or a paedophile or anyone else who commits serious crimes? what’s wrong with community service or a fine? Prison isn’t appropriate for a tweet

Then campaign to have the sentencing guidelines changed for the crime of publishing/distributing material that incites racial hatred.

Motomum23 · 07/04/2025 09:40

Surely it's the idiots who actually do the violent crime we ought to punish... jail for writing something is madness. There are plenty of people who have views that others will consider inflammatory... plenty of Muslims who call for jihad or fatwa (sp??) - they are not jailed. Political prisoner to stop other people posting online what they really feel about hotels full of asylum seekers and 2nd generation immigrants who are anti-english.

I don't think he should have been jailed. You have a right to defend your own home (and he had a weapon but didn't use it and had no priors).

Just because a woman filmed herself crying doesn't mean she was actually in any danger. I had to be in Blackpool when there was a riot meant to be going on and it was fine - I saw the crowds from rather less of a distance than I'd have liked if things did kick off but nothing really happened and I felt totally safe.

I'd be more worried about the counter-protesters running round with machetes. Far less attention was paid to them or the mob that beat up a man. That councillor isn't very safe either imo.

Are you white? People of colour may have (understandably) felt more at risk.

Her 'motivations' for being scared? Do people have motivations for being scared now?

JoyousEagle · 06/04/2025 23:21

She also said (as per the judge’s sentencing remarks) that if her comments got her arrested she’d “play the mental health card”.

I hadn’t heard that part.

So not only a nasty racist, but stupid enough to announce a dishonest mitigation strategy to the world? What a truly superb and socially useful human she sounds. 🙄

PandoraSox · 07/04/2025 09:43

She incited racial hatred in the midst of riots where racist thugs were actually attempting to burn down hotels.

What they really feel… like burn them all?

No-one has said it was ok. The sentence was absolutely disproportionate.

Yes some on here have said that.

Exactly - as some people racists see white people as individual people, whereas people who are black they can't help themselves but to lump them all together into one group of "they do this, or that"
It's dehumanising and disgusting.

I don't think anyone should go to prison for tweets.

Agreed.

Uricon2 · 07/04/2025 09:55

Judges sentencing remarks

The police were however able to trace other tweets that you had sent both before and after the 29th July which included further racist remarks. On the 5th August, the day before you were arrested you sent a WhatsApp message which included “..raging tweet about burning down hotels has bit me on the arse lol “

This means that it was not an isolated tweet following the Southport tragedy. She had posted racist remarks before it happened.

I wonder how many of the parents who gave evidence of her good character were aware of that Twitter/X account and what she'd written on it in the past?

MakeYourOwnMusicStartYourOwnDance · 07/04/2025 09:55

Gloriia · 07/04/2025 08:17

A tweet should not by any stretch of the imagination necessitate a custodial sentence.
What on earth is wrong with our justice system!
Actual criminals being released early because prisons are full yet someone banged up for a tweet.

It's not "just a tweet" though is it?! What part do you not get?
If someone who was Muslim/black had tweeted that about white people, you'd be ok with that would you?
I highly doubt it.

I think the majority of people don't think you should go to prison for Tweets. She wasn't sent to prison for writing Tweets.

Yes, it's always minimised, isn't it.
"I only sent a tweet!"
"I only sent an email" whatever
Yeah no you don't go to prison just for tweets, use your brain.

I'd have felt more at risk having to go by a counter-protest where people had machetes than one with a huge police presence where nothing happened. Harehills where the bus was set on fire with people on it was more dangerous and the police ran away.

I wouldn't film myself crying tbh. I don't see the point.

Could you link to this guy, please?

I’d rather not publicise him and his cause further. It was all over certain other social media sites about a month/ 6 weeks ago.

Apparently we had ample opportunity to block his entry but our government in its wisdom decided not to.

Why does it have to be an either/or situation?
How do you know she wouldn’t be frightened of machete wielding lunatics as well if she actually encountered them?

Nobody has said they are ok with that but Muslims with extreme views make speeches on social media and in mosques about how it is their duty to defeat, murder or forcibly convert us but they don’t get arrested and thrown in prison.

An ex Muslim called Raja Miah and a number of others are campaigning on this and the other social issues caused by the views of Islam about Westerners. He’s worth a look.
