Anti Trump Protests Across US

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 06/04/2025 07:09

Is this the start of a fightback?
Anti fart protests in more than 1000 cities across the US.
Tens of thousands massed in Washington with placards and banners.
Luckily for the orange shit and his cronies these are not violent thugs like his maga fans who broke into the Capitol threatening murder.
It is going to be a long, hard fight back to normality for America but AIBU to think that the tide will turn?

He wants a world recession all part of his master plan

Is it his master plan or Putin's?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/04/2025 11:44

... their only recourse is to protest, surely

Of course, @BustingBaoBun, my concern is the "how", and to clarify I believe the demos are pointless because many will take no notice beyond "Oh god they're at it again"

As for the guy deported to El Salvador, I agree that on the face of things it's a disgrace. However I don't know all the details so will watch to see if he's returned by today (which is what I believe the judge ordered)

Notonthestairs · 07/04/2025 11:48

"because most pulling-aside in immigration is done on the basis of intelliegence already received"
Of the 238 sent to Salvadoran mega prison, 75% didn't have a criminal record according to CBS news. They cross referenced domestic and international court records, news and arrest records.

YankTank · 07/04/2025 11:57

@Puzzledandpissedoff In March, Federal Judge Boasberg ruled that a plane loaded with 137 people (who had been denied immigration hearings in court—even Nazis found in the US after WWII were given their constitutional right to court hearings to determine whether they should be extradited for trial at Nuremberg) be stopped and turned around.

Trump and his team ignored this ruling and took those 137 people to the El Salvador prison. Trump called Federal Judge Boasberg a left-wing liberal judge. Yes, a total left-wing liberal, nominated by none other than….Republican George W Bush.

A court order means jack squat in the Trump administration.

I'm really puzzled by the sort of inert defeatism of some of these responses. Of course it makes a difference. It creates forward motion, connection, a feeling of common cause, shows that you don't have to slink away and hide if you disagree in a democracy, you can still have a voice. It shows the world that the US isn't one hive mind, it shows our children that you can and should stand up. It puts elected officials on notice that their constituents might not like what they're doing - they're the ones entrusted with the power to stand up to this and it's always worth pointing out that that power can be removed in the next election if they're not representing their voters.

Do I think it will change Trump or force the administration out? Of course not, but no forward progress or social movement in history has been accomplished by people accepting the status quo.

Edited

Totally agree with this, and I suspect that anyone who's ever been on a big protest would agree, too.

It gives a very real sign that there is opposition, and that a large body of people are bloody pissed off. That can help create a climate where politicians and other public figures feel more comfortable about speaking out against a government's actions.

I know, Notonthestairs, but the "advance intelligence recived" was in reply to a PP worried about taking in their phone through immigration rather than the removal of someone already in the country

Certainly mistakes get made and innocent people get trapped in the net - this latest guy seemingly among them - but equally it's nothing new for someone to claim innocence in the hope of creating a media storm when in fact they're anything but

DuncinToffee · 07/04/2025 12:02

Trump administration have admitted that they sent Maryland man to El Salvador prison by mistake

user109876543 · 06/04/2025 17:26

They're about making opposing voices heard. What's wrong with that? It's still a democracy, for the moment, anyway.

And the democratic vote was won by Trump who will be there for 4 years
All the placard waving in the worlds will not change that

Notonthestairs · 07/04/2025 12:07

There are processes that work to limit such cavalier mistakes.

It seems to indicate a desire for a quick headline grab (and perhaps something for the President's social media) rather than a sincere intention to reduce crime.

surreygirlzz · 07/04/2025 12:09

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/04/2025 09:38

I think everyone knows there are people who oppose Trump. Just wondering what they hope to achieve ...

A nice day out perhaps, @Livelovebehappy?

Doubtless it'll have been a lot of fun winding each other up about how awful Trump is, but while that's undeniable they might do better to address what the Democrats got wrong so we can all hope this kind of thing doesn't happen again

Agree some people just love to wave a placard it makes them feel good about themselves

Yorkshirelass04 · 07/04/2025 12:10

I think it's a step forward in the right direction.

However I can't help thinking that it will take civil unrest and arrests for anything to start yo shift. I hate to think about civil war but I wouldn't rule it out completely.

The protests won't bother Rump at all.

user109876543 · 07/04/2025 12:13

Puzzledandpissedoff · 07/04/2025 10:09

Agree completely with your second paragraph, TooBigForMyBoots, but I stand by my remark that these protests are "fun" for many attendees

Unfortunately I've known too many who are all up for a "demo" and get themselves wildly excited about the day, but are conspicuously absent when asked to follow up with anything that isn't quite so Instagrammable

I'm sure some people are out there for fun, but so what? Trump basically won by providing entertainment. I don't know why the Republicans are allowed to be irresponsible, grafting, lying, felonious sexual assaulters but Democrats are required to be the serious, norm-protecting, pinch-mouthed guardians of societal rectitude. People and political movements don't have to choose just one avenue of making themselves heard.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, an historian who's an expert in authoritarianism says:
@Authoritarians want people to be so resigned and hopeless and feeling that it’s their destiny to be in political situations without agency and rights that they give up…”

That's the point of these protests. To fight against resignation and hopelessness.

Plus, it's a big tent and there's room for everyone. Even Trump voters who have realised that Elon Musk and Trump are making them poorer and sicker and stupider.

Notonthestairs · 07/04/2025 12:14

The placard wavers haven't broken the law or ignored legal processes.

So what does that mean to you? That those who disagree with him tuck their tails between their legs and meekly bow down and go home for four years? Fuck that.

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/04/2025 13:26

surreygirlzz · 07/04/2025 12:06

It's not about getting rid of Trump. It's about opposing what he is doing and communicating that to him and the Republican Party.

Well.... the judge in question ordered for the plane not to take off, and that was ignored.

I find it worrying and indeed sad that you think demonstrations and protests are 'pointless'. Pictures of the protests were beamed all round the world, because it has to be pointed out that the people of the US are not all behind him. A lot of republicans have turned too. And there will be more.

Very many protests over decades are imprinted on my brain for all the right reasons... they weren't 'pointless'

Apathy gets you absolutely nowhere.

DdraigGoch · 07/04/2025 14:23

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/04/2025 11:42

Is it his master plan or Putin's?

Putin's, obviously. Trump is too thick to plan complicated things like that.

DdraigGoch · 07/04/2025 14:27

But if you get pulled for a random check, do you want to risk them finding anything blasphemous on there? The detention centres are utterly inhumane, using a burner phone for the trip seems like a small price to pay.

DdraigGoch · 07/04/2025 14:29

Notonthestairs · 07/04/2025 12:14

The placard wavers haven't broken the law or ignored legal processes.

Neither did the bloke who ended up in El Salvador.

Ddakji · 07/04/2025 14:36

I was on Fifth Avenue and observed the march in NYC going past (on holiday here).

My observations and that it was colossal, that it was grassroots (I’d say over 90% of the placards I saw were homemade), it was peaceful (I didn’t feel at all unsafe) but it didn’t come across as a fun day out either. It felt very genuine.

vandelier · 07/04/2025 18:09

Were there any marches in the Red States yet?

DuncinToffee · 07/04/2025 18:15

The protest marches are in all 50 states

vandelier · 07/04/2025 18:09

Yes. I live in a red state and there were several here. Smaller crowds than the big cities in blue states - red states have smaller, more rural populations - but definitely happening. We have protesters outside the local Tesla dealership every week too.

deeahgwitch · 08/04/2025 09:24

I read somewhere that, apparently, if you are going on holiday to the US, your phone can be checked at immigration and your stance on the government on social media might mean you are not allowed in.
Does that include Mumsnet ?
Eeek !
