Anti Trump Protests Across US

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 06/04/2025 07:09

Is this the start of a fightback?
Anti fart protests in more than 1000 cities across the US.
Tens of thousands massed in Washington with placards and banners.
Luckily for the orange shit and his cronies these are not violent thugs like his maga fans who broke into the Capitol threatening murder.
It is going to be a long, hard fight back to normality for America but AIBU to think that the tide will turn?

No sign of it on the bbc website. Not that I doubt it’s happening. But that I despair of the news media.

Pretty sure it was the main headline on the BBC for much of yesterday...

dapsnotplimsolls · 06/04/2025 17:51

The Guardian had a live thread on it yesterday.

twinklystar23 · 06/04/2025 17:53

Putin i should think will be gleefully revelling in the catastrophic state of the West. Trump and his band of $$$$ focussed cronies have no respect for denocracy. The west isnt of course the perfect utopia by a mile but there are some checks and balances which the current POTUS and his cronies are dismantling ar speed. Christ hes only been in 2 months what will the nect 4 yesrs bring.

It's also still the main story on the US & Canada portion of the BBC website...

They're about making opposing voices heard. What's wrong with that? It's still a democracy, for the moment, anyway.

I think everyone knows there are people who oppose Trump. Just wondering what they hope to achieve. It's not like he can have his contract as president to be terminated is it?

No, but it lets other elected representatives know that their constituents are not happy, and if they want to be re-elected in future they might want to stand up for them. At the moment all Republican representatives - even the more traditional ones who previously opposed Trump - are going along with his bullshit, and most house Democrats are standing around tutting and shaking their heads but doing nothing (with the notable exceptions of Al Green, Cory Booker, AOC and Bernie Sanders).

Also on the point of everyone knowing that there is opposition to Trump; I live in a very red state, where voter apathy is a huge problem. Significantly more people didn’t vote at all than voted for Trump, and given the demographics it’s likely that many of them didn’t bother because they thought their vote wouldn’t count. Seeing people out there protesting will let them know that there are in fact plenty of non-Trump supporters and maybe incentivise them to vote in future.

Might scare off some of his backers though. Looks like Tesla-related protests and boycotts are already making the Muskrat wobble.

Echobelly · 06/04/2025 21:34

It's better than doing nothing. A lot of people there have also said it has helped galvanise them and make them feel less helpless to see how many other people are angry and opposing all this. The GOP make much of 'The American people want this or that', but this makes it clear a lot of them don't and for very good reason.

So the only time to make your voice heard in a democracy is when it's time to vote?

If you think things are going badly off the rails, lives affected, wrongs perpetrated, systems of government being subverted, you should just shut up, sit down and stay home until he next election?

Do you never do anything just because it's the right thing?

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 07/04/2025 08:34

I think the Americans who are doing this are brilliant. The democrats need to get their act together so hopefully this movement will put a rocket up their arses.
Plus, as said, it gives a reply to the constant Shite House claims about what the American people want.
And it shows the rest of the world that not all Americans are selfish dickheads.

I don't wish to derail your thread but you've already won the prize for the best typo of the day 😂

I wouldn't call it a typo. Some people use trump as a euphemism for fart, so he is, in fact, President Fart.

VicksJunkie · 07/04/2025 08:42

I’ve said you’re being unreasonable but only because I don’t think these marches will change anything. But then, I’m an old cynic. I see things getting very bad in the States, for a long time.

I'm really puzzled by the sort of inert defeatism of some of these responses. Of course it makes a difference. It creates forward motion, connection, a feeling of common cause, shows that you don't have to slink away and hide if you disagree in a democracy, you can still have a voice. It shows the world that the US isn't one hive mind, it shows our children that you can and should stand up. It puts elected officials on notice that their constituents might not like what they're doing - they're the ones entrusted with the power to stand up to this and it's always worth pointing out that that power can be removed in the next election if they're not representing their voters.

Do I think it will change Trump or force the administration out? Of course not, but no forward progress or social movement in history has been accomplished by people accepting the status quo.

This, exactly.

boombasticfantastic · 07/04/2025 09:02

Has Trump or the administration made any comment yet about the protests? I’m fascinated by what their response will be.

I feel very sorry for the average decent humans who live in America right now. It’s reassuring to see so many people out on the streets protesting. It gives me a glimmer of hope for the future.

Topseyt123 · 07/04/2025 09:03

I'm glad this is happening and hope it continues to gather momentum.

It won't stop the stupid orange fart in his tracks, but it might make the Republican party realise what deep shit they are hopefully in come the mid-term elections. Then they just might at least try to get their arses into gear and pick a better candidate for the next presidential election. Assuming that Trump (orange fart) doesn't rip up the constitution and stand for a third term, as he has already hinted he might.

I can't verify this, but apparently this is what he said on Fox News

Verified or not, it sounds just like the sort of ignorant waffle that is typical of the Orange Fart.

I think it's particularly important to counter their 'massive mandate' narrative. He did win, but it was hardly the crushing landslide they've depicted. And the numbers below are (iirc) based on 60% of the voting eligible population turning out.

With 96% of the vote in, Trump has, according to the Associated Press, 49.97% to Vice President Harris' 48.36%, or 76.9 million votes to 74.4 million. (The U.S. Election Atlas has a higher raw vote total and a slightly narrower margin, 49.78% to 48.23%, or 77.1 million votes to 74.7 million.)

It's strangely absent from the media.

The fact it's absent from the Fail is quite revealing. I think the focus won't be put on it over here either as long as the UK is seeking a trade deal with the US. (As an aside, I wouldn't want our government to compromise on freedom of speech for the sake of it though - that would be an unacceptable compromise).
The total number of protests was closer to 2000 events if you count ones in smaller towns. It all added up to about 5 million people. The interesting thing is that it happened in every state (including red ones) and towns big and small, which indicates a grassroots movement from the ground up. Less spectacular visually than one big protest in DC with 1 million people but much more indicative of the fact that ordinary Americans are not all marching to the beat of the same drum...
