Glasses - soooo expensive!

Someone please make me feel better - just been to Specsavers and spent £500 on 2 pairs of glasses (with the 241 frame offer!)
one pair of varifocals, 1 pair occupational
is that about right?
I’ve bought online before with varying success, so decided to be properly fitted. I just need to that this is about right these days, and I’m just behind the times!
My prescription is -4.50 and I have astigmatism.

@LadeOde Yes, but they want you to buy their frames, as such a huge mark up on cost price. So they make reglazing almost as expensive so you don't bother!

@herbaceous Isn't this what happens normally as in you buy a pair of frames then they take the lenses out and put in the prescription ones? have i had it wrong all these yrs? everytime I've bought frames from Specsavers they always warn that it'll look slightly different after they put the prescription lenses in.

You’re recycling existing frames. They make new lenses for them.

Ask for a copy of your prescription and get your glasses online. Pretty much pay what you want that way. Loads of options. I’ve bought from glasses direct and my friend got a bunch of cheap pairs from another website for different fashion statements.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads Yes single vision. As I stated. But I'm more than a -5, and I have quite severe astigmatism. It would genuinely be the varifocals bit that would be adding up, but as stated, would likely still be less than £500!

Sorry to sound thick I’ve just been looking online seen A designer pair for 170 pounds and another pair bog standard for 70, one for reading one for everyday. How do the offers work out, single vision only

@ChompandaGrazia & @AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti Thanks. What is reglazing?? I'll look it up.

Pretty obvious, really!

I can't believe everyone pays so much!! I couldn't bring myself to spend more than £150 on a pair of glasses unless I absolutely had no choice!! I'd much prefer to spend under £100.

Anyone know if Asda do a basics style of glasses? Do they have any cheap £20 to £30 frames? Anyone found cheaper than Asda?

Thanks

Specsavers charged me £15 for a pair of single-vision glasses in their basic frames. No thinning or coating or lens treatments. I use them in a specific situation and I must say I find them fine.

Ones for just reading you can get from £1.99! Usually get mine from Superdrug for about £12.99, bit better quality.

Tessasanderson · 20/08/2025 14:01

Just spent £285 on a pair. I have the astigmatism etc too.

Designer frames - yes
Varifocal - Yes
Fancy coating for when i drive - Yes
Transition Lenses - Yes
Thinest lense choice - Yes (There are standard, 75% & 85% thinner)

All in they were £570 but i get them half price due to my contact lense contract. They are my first pair of varifocals and transition. Plan is they hopefully will be my glasses and sunglasses when not wearing contacts. With everything on them i also have 100 days to walk back in and foc just insist on a different pair regardless of the reason.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/08/2025 14:52

My last pair were £700 as specsavers et al can't do my complicated prescription. I almost choked.

Mikart · 20/08/2025 14:53

Varifocal glasses and Raybans cost me £800 last month. Independent opthalmist.

MaryGreenhill · 20/08/2025 15:04

Asda all the way £90 for 2 prs of varifocals for me that would have been £170 in Specsavers
