This new toilet duck has mugged me off. Where is the 99.9% germ kill claim?

I picked up a new version of toilet duck a few weeks ago. Virtual Violet. Snazzy name and pretty bottle sucked me in. I was getting on fine with it up to now. Nice colour and smells nice but just put some down the toilet before I jumped in the shower when I noticed on the bottle there was no 99.9% germ kill tag as you usually get with a loo cleaner. Removes limescale blah blah blah but no germ kill. Looked at the back of the bottle in the list of ingredients and it doesn't even contain disinfectant. Feeling totally mugged off by toilet duck doing a half arsed job and probably left my loo with a two week backlog of germs no doubt mocking me.

[adds bleach to the weekly shopping list]

I’ve gone YABU because I don’t understand why people don’t just use bleach, it’s cheaper too.

TranceNation · 05/04/2025 07:47

Ha yeah I'm not loyal with cleaning products. It's usually 50/50 if I go for bleach or a nice smelling loo cleaner. I know what you mean though. Least you know what you are getting with bleach.

Outrageous. In solidarity with you when I go to the park later I will feed the ducks bread even though it's not good for them.

Just use bleach! Anything else is just dyed and perfumed bleach, serving only to show everyone you've put something down the lavatory

Ineffable23 · 05/04/2025 08:04

The difference between bleach and loo cleaners, I think, is usually that loo cleaners have a descaler in. Which round here is definitely required!

Argh I love ducks. They always look like happy creatures. This toilet duck has done their good name and injustice.

I don’t use bleach very often. It has no descaler in it and using it over years will ruin the surface of your sanitary ware. It also is very bad for the environment.

RobinHeartella · 05/04/2025 08:11

Your toilet doesn't have to be "germ free" though. It's a toilet, not a mixing bowl for pancake batter haha.

Removing limescale prevents build up on the surfaces.

Pouring lots of bleach isn't good for the environment at all.

Haha yeah maybe there is some sort of ulterior motive in that. I do expect a good germ thrashing too though so yep back to bleach.

I rarely use bleach, mainly because I can't stand the smell.

RobinHeartella · 05/04/2025 08:14

The most important thing is shutting the lid when flushing. Rather than trying to make your toilet a sterile container

Ha no I don't make pancakes in my toilet, true but I still expect a toilet cleaner to kill some germs. As for the environment, I'm sure your car isn't good for the environment either.

Are you licking the inside of your toilet?

FreddoSwaggins · 05/04/2025 08:22

Just so you know, ducks can be right bastards. Not quite dolphin territory but getting there.

Remember that before you go generously sharing your toilet bowl pancakes with them.

Mauro711 · 05/04/2025 08:23

i really couldn't care less if the inside of my toilet bowl has germs in it for the hour or so it gets unused after a clean. Getting rid om limescale though, that is quite important as that can actually cause damage. Pouring bleach into our toilets though is bad in so many ways. It ruins the pipes and it gets into our drinking water. I really have no clue why so many people do that, it's completely unnecessary and harmful.

I have seen ducks run eagerly up to a kitten with diarrhoea and ..yeah, I'm not going to spell it out. Just don't allow the ducks into your toilet!

No, but I used to lick windows when I was kid (allegedly).

What have the ducks down your park done to upset you so much?!

Yeah there was definitely some rapey behaviour going on last time I was watching them at the park.

Perhaps some of them deserve to end up in pancakes....

DP won't buy bleach because the cat turns into an utter knob (well, more of one than usual) with the smell.

HelenWheels · 05/04/2025 09:09

i dont use bleach, it ruins my clothes and i am not keen on the smell, makes me cough

notprincehamlet · 05/04/2025 09:12

As long as your loo doesn't double as a soup tureen or punch bowl you'll be fine
