To say UK holidays are absolutely extortionate?

I’ve just been looking for a 2/3 night break in Cornwall and it’s nearly £1500!

Im in Scotland so we’d be flying down there but my god! The prices are just eye watering. Not just for the flights but the accommodation too. I understand that running a business is bloody expensive in the UK so the prices have to reflect that, but how they can keep afloat charging so much?

Depends on what types of holiday it is. Cornwall is notoriously expensive. Does that price include flights? How many are going? I have definitely noticed a jump in prices of UK holidays going up, but we found 4 nights in Cornwall for £750, a week in a private house on the Isle of Wight for £880 and we have just booked Scotland for £760 for 9 days. That includes the premier inn half way (on the journey up and back again as we are driving). I have to say though, after we've factored in petrol and meals, it's definitely cheaper to do an all inclusive in Spain or Greece, but I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of flying with a 2yr old.

Sadly, the prices will keep going up the more people keeping paying them.

DenholmElliot11 · 04/04/2025 20:09

That sounds reasonable to me.

CarpetKnees · 04/04/2025 20:11

Yes, YABU.

I mean, you have picked the most expensive place to go and stay, and are flying there !

I've never paid anything like that sort of money for UK holidays.

UndermyShoeJoe · 04/04/2025 20:13

Yes we are doing over 2k for wales this year, £600 for a weekend in Norfolk by the beach, 1k again a weekend in Cornwall. All caravan holidays.

People say go aboard it’s cheaper but I’ve yet to actually find that cheaper place still.

Slobberchops1 · 04/04/2025 20:15

We don’t holiday in the UK anymore, it’s too expensive especially in the school holidays. We go self catering on holiday parks in the Netherlands, much cheaper

skipdiddyskip · 04/04/2025 20:15

Yes we spent £800 on accommodation alone going to York for 3 days. The whole thing with petrol (5 hour drive each way for us), dinners out and activities probably came to about £1200 for 3 days!

HeddaGarbled · 04/04/2025 20:22

It’s not UK - it’s the specific place you’ve chosen.

PicaK · 04/04/2025 20:23

Look at Pembrokeshire instead if you don't like the price of Cornwall.

whatnoooow · 04/04/2025 20:24

It was nothing fancy, just a B&B and I don’t fancy driving down from Scotland to Cornwall. We just wanted a few days by the beach and to eat some local food.

Northumberland would be nearer. And nicer, as not full of Cornwall Holiday Twats and Seething Locals. Plenty of good local food.

Flying to the other end of the country is never going to be cheap!

I am driving 3 hours away next week for £300 in a caravan for 4 nights.

Yeah I get that. I just think it’s mad I can fly to France for £60!

Don't go to Cornwall, it's very expensive. There are loads of lovely cheaper places, as pp have said. Pembrokeshire is a good call.

Lookuptotheskies · 04/04/2025 20:49

It's because you're flying to Cornwall!

Drive to some of the northern England coastline instead maybe? You've no guarantee of sunny weather in any part of the UK, and for the sake of a few days it's a LOT of money.

There are reasonable priced UK breaks.

RhododendronFlowers · 04/04/2025 20:50

How many are there of you, and how much is the flight?

Sirzy · 04/04/2025 21:01

But even that depends where in France. Flying from big airport to big airport will generally be cheaper than flying to smaller regional airports

Another vote for Pembrokeshire. Its beautiful, similar to Cornwall. Fantastic beaches and lots to do for kids-farm parks etc.

Chiseltip · 04/04/2025 21:21

You can get a week in a five star hotel in Budapest for £1200. Bed and breakfast, Including flights.

Yeah, the UK is an absolute rip off. It's pretty much criminal at this point. Just extortion for the sake of it.

There is no way a night in a garden shed (log cabin) on a farm in Cornwall (rustic country view) is worth £400 a night. Not when a hotel in a stunning EU city can provide Champagne Breakfast, free Sauna, Jacuzzi and Gym. Not to mention free sparkling water, Tea and Coffee, as well as a complimentary massage, for seven nights, for just over £1000.

Europe all the way. Rip off Britain can go jump.

A week in a "log cabin" in Cornwall would have cost £2800!

And you'd have to bring your own food . . .

Complimentary message every night? Have you got the link to this hotel 😂
