What do you think of this bridesmaids look (totally different dresses)

I’m having a Summer wedding in a beautiful manicured garden (weather permitting - it is abroad so very likely)

I have come across this image and think it’s just lovely. I had been looking at various shades of teal. So don’t know if I am drawn to this style just because I am over looking at blue dresses or if I genuinely prefer it.

What do you think? I will have 4 bridesmaids

I really don’t like many dresses labelled “bridesmaids” dresses so it appeals that I can just give each bridesmaid a colour and they can find a knockout dress in said colour

A mix of colours are nice I was at a wedding where the bridesmaids were in different colours, from the same Palette or is it spectrum? Anyway it looked lovely, those styles though don't go with those

MatildaTheCat · 04/04/2025 15:11

Really nice. I don’t think there is a single colour or style on earth that suits everyone so letting them choose is great. I do think it’s better to have all different colours though rather than, say two green, one blue and one pink.

Enjoy

I think it's a great idea.
Much better the bridesmaids have dresses they love and that suit them.

Identical dresses rarely suit all.

Epps · 04/04/2025 15:13

I love this. I like all the different colours. My sister had 6 bridesmaids, we all choose our own dresses in cream. I think it’s a great idea, congratulations.

TokyoSushi · 04/04/2025 15:13

I think it looks really pretty, but agree all different colours and same tone, you couldn't have all pastel and a red for example.

TidyDancer · 04/04/2025 15:14

They are lovely dresses. The problem I suppose is that you could get four hugely clashing styles. I wouldn’t personally care much about this but it would matter to some.

What’s the budget you’re giving them?

Darkclothes · 04/04/2025 15:14

Personally, I'd have the same dress in various colours- so all pastels, or shades of teal etc. A mix of colours and styles looks messy IMO, but its obviously up to you.

Or, have some form of consistency- all full length and strapless, all knee length with cap sleeves or all the same colour etc.

Vanillalime · 04/04/2025 15:15

I do quite like different styles of dress to compliment body shapes, but personally I’m not a fan of different dresses AND colours. I don’t think that image is lovely and feels a bit like random bridesmaids from different weddings 🙈

I think light teal dresses of different styles for a summer wedding abroad could be lovely.

Purplebunnie · 04/04/2025 15:16

I love this with a little caveat, the dress on the far right with the split is a bit of a scene stealer. Okay if you don't want all the attention so maybe as someone else has said different colours with some consistency

PashaMinaMio · 04/04/2025 15:16

I’m thinking some guidance about colours might be wise unless you won’t mind black, dark green, purple or bright red bridesmaid dresses?

Otherwise it’s a great idea and your illustrative photo is lovely.

sciaticafanatica · 04/04/2025 15:16

Dd1 was a bridesmaid last year and they were allowed to choose any style of dress in any pastel shade. It looked lovely

Fairyliz · 04/04/2025 15:17

Sorry I don’t like mixed colours and styles, I think it looks messy and just four random women standing together.
I prefer the same colour and fabric but in different styles. That way it appears more pulled together.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 04/04/2025 15:17

That's not what the photo shows though - this is bridesmaids in completely different colours AND styles.

Personally I think the photo looks great. Same-colour-different-styles has been in vogue for a few years so it's going to date your photos and be very of its time, like the strapless wedding dresses of the noughties.

Magpiecomplex · 04/04/2025 15:18

I did this, my bridesmaids ranged from pre-teen to mid 20s so we went for nice dresses within the same colour group as DH's waistcoat, and my mum also coordinated her dress.

BarnacleBeasley · 04/04/2025 15:18

I think it's lovely too - but it's working because although the colours and styles of dress are different, everything else is the same, down to the body shape of the bridesmaids (I'm not suggesting you can engineer that, obviously! But the stylist who did that photo will have done). So they're all pastels, long, fairly straight down, sleeveless or strappy, with coordinating flowers, and same hairstyle. You couldn't just give the bridesmaids a colour and free rein, I don't think - the look is working because other parameters have been tightened up.

CarrieOnComplaining · 04/04/2025 15:21

I went to a wedding where all the bridesmaids chose their own dresses within a colour - say blue, and there was eau de nil through duck egg, navy turquoise and teal . It was gorgeous, and they all chose dresses that suited their shape. Much better.

thinkingofausername · 04/04/2025 15:22

This only works with pastels.

If you were considering bold colours, they need to be the same colour.

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 04/04/2025 15:22

I think there are ways you could do this and have it work - same/very similar dresses in i.e. different sugared almond pastel colours of the same sort of depth and tone.

This photo is not that though, just looks messy to me. Dresses are too different and colour range is all wrong to go together.

BatchCookBabe · 04/04/2025 15:22

They look genuinely gorgeous. 😍 I knew a bride once who had 7 bridesmaids, and she had them all in different colours too - not different design dresses though - the designs were all pretty much the same. It looked awesome!

Bit like this but the colours were pretty much all pastel. (No dark pink like the one lass on here...)

Different styles to suit different body types in colours from the same colour palette would look lovely on the day and in the photos , too.

Itiswhysofew · 04/04/2025 15:28

They look gorgeous. A lovely idea, especially with the differing flowers.

Shetlands · 04/04/2025 15:31

You could choose a range of pastel shades eg lemon, lilac, pale pink, peach, duck egg blue, sage green and ask them to pick one each so you'll have 4 different shades that will look good together. Then they can choose their own style as long it matches your preferences eg sleeveless, long, solid colour.

Sourwitch · 04/04/2025 15:34

Lovely and a nice change.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 04/04/2025 15:34

It’s quite nice but I prefer different dresses in the same colour like a girl band.

Plife · 04/04/2025 15:37

I’ve been looking non stop at bridesmaid dresses

but is it just me but or is the same colour/fabric but different silhouette/style look a bit over done. Especially in satin. I assumed that’s what I would go for but I am really pulling away from it
