What do you think of this bridesmaids look (totally different dresses)

I’m having a Summer wedding in a beautiful manicured garden (weather permitting - it is abroad so very likely)

I have come across this image and think it’s just lovely. I had been looking at various shades of teal. So don’t know if I am drawn to this style just because I am over looking at blue dresses or if I genuinely prefer it.

What do you think? I will have 4 bridesmaids

I really don’t like many dresses labelled “bridesmaids” dresses so it appeals that I can just give each bridesmaid a colour and they can find a knockout dress in said colour

They look genuinely gorgeous. 😍 I knew a bride once who had 7 bridesmaids, and she had them all in different colours too - not different design dresses though - the designs were all pretty much the same. It looked awesome!

Bit like this but the colours were pretty much all pastel. (No dark pink like the one lass on here...)

I love this (apart from the pink)

My dress is quite busy so I don’t know if it will just end up too messy looking

I hate identical dresses, think it looks so old fashioned, hardly eve suit different body types or colouring. I said no to being a bridesmaid as she was insisting on strapless dresses and there is no strapless bra that will hold my large boobs up sufficiently to look nice. I also feel naked with too much flesh showing. Plus traditional bridesmaid dresses are so 'samey' and rarely something that you can wear again.

I say go for it, in shades you like.

You could always ask them to send you a photo before buying, just in case you really hate one.

Plife · 04/04/2025 15:41

there are just so many knockout summer dresses out there. I genuinely believe most women will be better dressed than my bridesmaids if I put them in that typical satin dress all the same colour look

I love the different colours and dresses. I prefer it to grown women dressed identically

NotMeNoNo · 04/04/2025 15:42

I think the original photo with lemon, pink, green and blue is at risk of looking a bit like those talent shows where all the contestants are put in different colours of the same outfit to tell them apart, inevitably suiting some better than others. Especially with the matching bouquets. (Picture is just to remind you what to avoid!)

You could make a colour palette of a range of toning colours, say blues and violets and let the bridesmaids choose a shade that suits them - some will have warmer/cooler/deeper colouring. But try to keep the dresses reasonably similar in length and cut.

I absolutely love the flowers matching the dresses in your first photo.

ChloeCannotCanCan · 04/04/2025 15:53

I think that initial photo looks lovely - because although they are all different they have similarities e.g pastels, not long sleeved or high necked, floor length etc. so I’d choose some ground rules and then let your bridesmaids choose.

I think the ‘satin dress, same colour but different necklines/styles’ look is a bit dated now

CosyDenimShark · 04/04/2025 15:56

My friend owns a bridal shop and she says this idea is becoming more and more popular. Maybe give a colour palette and ask them to send a photo before buying?
I agree that different body types look better in different styles so I quite like the mis match style.

PayingItBack · 04/04/2025 15:57

I like the 'odd' bridesmaids look but with some guidelines, ie, all the same length, within a colour family like pastel, similar material if possible to tie the look together. I think one satin, one tulle, one velvet would look silly.

CheerfulBunny · 04/04/2025 16:03

My mum and dad had different coloured bridesmaids dresses at their wedding in the 60s although their bridesmaids were 'littles'. From memory I think they were sugar almond colours which matched the freesias in my mum's bouquet. I've always thought it's a lovely idea.

Plife · 04/04/2025 16:03

I assumed I would do something like this in more of a teal colour. But since starting to look for dresses I have sort of become quite over it. No offence to the people in the pic they are obviously beyond stunning regardless of what they wear

Do whatever you like. It's your wedding.

itsjustbiology · 04/04/2025 16:16

I think this is a lovely idea. My son and his husband had 3 bridesmaids each and they were all women. My son wanted blush for his so he sent the ladies off to choose what they liked and my son in law wanted navy so he sent his off. Not one dress was the same and they looked amazing. In my view they were all classy. The flower girls and page boys all wore what their mums chose as they were tiny tots but the bridesmaids stole the show!

MikeRafone · 04/04/2025 16:22

that picture is so pretty, it reminds me of an afternoon crockery for tea and cake in patterns with flowers.

I wouldn't want the dress with a split, I like the green dress on the left

CarpetKnees · 04/04/2025 16:24

It is very fashionable now, I know, but for me, if you are asking more than one person to be bridesmaid, I think there hast to be something that links them together - whether different styles in same colour, or the different colours of the same style would work, but if you are having multiple bridesmaids, I feel there needs to be something that links them together and sets them apart from other guests on the day.

Comedycook · 04/04/2025 16:25

I like the overall aesthetic but I feel like it kind of takes attention away from the brides dress

BunnyLake · 04/04/2025 16:26

I like it. In fact I like the mix of colours much better than one uniform colour.

I’ve been looking non stop at bridesmaid dresses

but is it just me but or is the same colour/fabric but different silhouette/style look a bit over done. Especially in satin. I assumed that’s what I would go for but I am really pulling away from it

I absolutely love the one on the right.

I am also currently obsessed with bridesmaid dresses- my future DIL has asked my DD and my other DIL as well as 2 friends.

She said to me that she wants them to get a dress they love and feel great in on the day. They all have very different shapes and colouring and there is no way they would all look good in the same dress or even the exact same colour.

I think giving guidance-such as shades of blue or pastels or jewel tones-the second picture is perfect-they all "go" but don't match.

They sent me a link to their photographer and I looked at some of the weddings-almost no one has "matchy matchy" dresses-seems very old fashioned now to me!

I was a bridesmaid in 6 weddings and wore some of the most spectacularly awful dresses you have ever seen-including one that had to be deliberate 😂

Good luck!!

VeryNiceDay · 04/04/2025 16:31

I think the problem is that all the bridesmaids look nicer than the bride as she is in a relatively plain dress, with it being white.

Yeah it's really overdone. Bit like the all-grey decor trend that everybody now shuns.

Ah yes you could have a point there (though I do like the aesthetic very much).

MsNevermore · 04/04/2025 16:34

I love it.
Also different styles of dresses is always great because not everyone is going to be the same shape and size 🤷🏻‍♀️ This way everyone has a dress that flatters their figure and they are comfortable in.
When I got married, my sister was my only adult bridesmaid. I knew what colour I wanted the dress to be (which she also liked!) but then I let her loose in the shop to choose the style she liked best and would be most comfortable in. She ended up choosing a floor length, empire-line dress and it was perfect for her!

I love the mixed look, very pretty, natural and modern. Go for it!

katmarie · 04/04/2025 16:41

I had two adult bridesmaids whei I got married. We ended up going with the same dress style, in two different colours, and then I switched the tie belts on the dresses so they each had the other's colour belt. It worked quite nicely, they went together without being too matchy. I do like the whole different dresses, different colours look, though, but I do feel like something should tie them together.
