Had to ring in and state that we were locked in the house (which was actually true, the lock on the front door broke as we were trying to leave) boss was very sarcastic that people normally get locked out of their house!

I had that problem many years ago - dad had gone out to work and locked the door behind him with his own key. I had an appointment at the job centre (claiming JSA at the time) and couldn't actually find another key to get out of the house with. I rang the lady in panic and she said don't worry, but I think I did get out (can't remember how).

Crazyladee · 03/04/2025 11:49

A guy who I worked with (company director and accountant) always got his wife to ring in sick for him. Always for reasons that raised our eyebrows. The most memorable one was trapped wind.

BearSoFair · 03/04/2025 11:50

'Just remembered' he was moving house two days later and had to pack...

I hate the quivering 'poorly voice' and the having to rush off as they are going to vomit- no Steve you put on Facebook last night about the epic night out you were having and a pic of your kebab at 2 am- that is why you are feeling sick!
Cannot stand the duvet day thing where people need a day off for no reason- we need to go back to getting on with life! Yes some days are shit but you don't get to hide away from it. You are just postponing stuff.

I used to get terrible stomach cramps when I was on my period , they were so painful, I would get cold sweats and vomit.

On this occasion, I was on the phone to my manager and actually did vomit half way through the call. I was on my way to work, sat on a crowded tube, of all places, when I felt the cramps starting, I felt very faint and decided to get off at a random stop. I walked to the nearest park and sat on a bench whilst trying to breath through the pain (now that I’ve given birth twice, I can confirm the pain was akin to contractions, no exaggeration!)
I rang my manager and had to say ‘hang on a second’ she heard me being sick and said ‘yeh, I’ve just heard you being sick, go back home’

It happened another time (different job) years earlier, I heard later that the manager at the time had said I must of taken something the previous night. Implying I’d taken drugs! (Which I have never touched!)

There’s snow on my car

"My girlfriend's mother's cat took a turn for the worse and I had to stay and give her some comfort." (Didn't elaborate on what sort of 'comfort' was necessary)

And from the same employee: "My step-daughter did really well in her school spelling test so I had to take her into town and buy her some new trainers and an ice cream."

'My girlfriends cat has died and she's really upset'

I worked in payroll for 10 years so I've heard them all but that made me laugh!

I think it’s a fair one though.

Imagine you’re the girlfriend, you’re absolutely in bits because your beloved pet of 10 years has died, and you’re sobbing… In the bf’s shoes I’d stay to cuddle with her as well.

I know which boyfriend I’d stay with and which one I’d probably break up with! You shouldn’t leave a person you live beside themselves crying their eyes out if you have choices.

I was once several hours late for work because my neighbour/ friend was extremely upset and crying in my kitchen. You don’t just go ‘cheerio now, gotta be at my desk at 8 sending important emails, hope you’ll work this out’.

Disclaimer, accept that in some jobs that are actually of major importance you can’t do that.

No, she’d need a gentleman dog for that.

That’s given me the uncontrollable giggles.

Grandpa died for the 5th time

If you include great-grandads and step-grandads, some people could have 8.

I got stuck in my bedroom! Door handle didn't work. Fortunately, my LL came to the rescue in a couple of hours. Colleagues disappointingly bare noticed my ordeal.

AuntAgathaGregson · 03/04/2025 12:25

A condom broke the night before and she had to get the MAP.

I'd be mortified at making a boyfriend take a day off because I was upset about a pet.

A colleague met a young man on holiday, waiter in the hotel , and inevitably managed to get him a visa - he was twenty years her junior, spoke no English. Cue two days off for the wedding. Then she thought a heavier than normal period might have been a miscarriage , no reason to think she had been pregnant apparently, but another colleague had recently had a miscarriage at three months so she thought she could have been pregnant too. A week off. A year later he decided he didn’t want to be married anymore so she had three days off so they could “end the relationship with dignity” which involved a trip to central London to watch a Disney movie together…….

It was the sort of love story that deserved a Hollywood treatment.

My ExH once called in when he had a horrendous hangover and said that the cat was in a coma.

Me …. Fell asleep at the beach. Got so badly sunburnt could barely walk, let alone sit at a desk.

Her horse died. Ok, a tragic and upsetting thing, but three weeks off? You don’t get that long if your mum dies!

I mean I took longer off for my horse dying than I did for my mum…
I wouldn’t judge someone for that. Basically when everything was shit my horse was always there, bad breakups, work issues, I would go and ride
Then she died and all I wanted was to go to her. It was like being homesick for a home that didn’t exist any more and I was absolutely broken
But I was closer to her than I was to my mum

I think this is fair because technically she needed the day off to get medical care

To be fair, you definitely don’t get to ‘schedule’ major surgery follow up appointments. You’re expected to take what you’re given generally or wait a potentially dangerous length of time.

This. Quite a few on here thinking you can schedule hospital appointments including post op follow ups! Please tell me what magical service you use as it cannot be the NHS! I’m going through IVF at the moment - assisted conception unit at my NHS hospital is open 8:30-4:30. I work from 8-4 as a teacher at a school 20 mins away from said hospital. My local authority employer thinks I should schedule appointments outwith working hours. Would love to know how.

I had a boss call in to say he was going to be late because his cat followed him all the way to the station and he had to take it back home 😂😂😂

As a lifelong cat person I can confirm that this is very plausible 🤣

It was his neighbour's dog's funeral. I kid you not.
Got to admire his nerve. Me, I'd have said food poisoning...

Found out his dad was having an affair. His dad was 83

From a previous place of work…

  • Got wet on the way to the bus stop
  • Didn’t have any ironed shirts
  • A week off - a week - as he’d pulled his hamstring playing 5-a-side. The company brought in a policy afterwards that any time off for sporting injuries was to be unpaid, which I thought was unfair. Sure, not the companies fault but what’s the difference between needing time off with a broken leg from skiing or being drunk and falling over, which was covered.
  • ’only’ got six hours sleep the night before.

My Mum’s old neighbour had a cat who did that! The chipper was at the bottom of the hill and he’d leave with her and trail behind her all the way down and back! Loved the fish scraps he would get.

My DHs company has this policy and I agree it’s a bit unfair! In his twenties my DH got paid for the 3 weeks off he had due to incredibly painful ligament damage, sustained while being a drunken twat in a nightclub. Unpaid leave a year later for the broken leg sustained while playing 5 a side football. 🤷🏻‍♀️
