To be annoyed that my siblings "copy" my children names?

Hey I am sound like a total a-ole because I don't owe names.

I have 3 children Levi, Joey and Clara. 15 , 7 ,1

A bit of background, Joey is my father that they never met , my mum remarried years after his passing. His name was Joe but he was known as Joey.

Levi is my son; 3 years later my brother named his son Levi too.
I got a son " Joey", my sister-in-law got pregnant 4 years and they named their girl Joey.

This time I got super nasty and told them he was dead well before they met my mum. That they had no imagination. I regret it.

Well, surely people use family names all the time, precisely because they're family names? If you don't want other people to use them, don't choose family names, which are more likely to be chosen by siblings for the same reason you chose them?

YANBU to find this weird and annoying. Similar names is one thing but they’re literally copying your children’s names.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 01/04/2025 13:28

This is weird 😭😭, yanbu op x

Doolallies · 01/04/2025 13:30

Yanbu

Lyra87 · 01/04/2025 13:30

I think it's odd that they used the exact names so I don't think you're unreasonable at all. Nobody owns a name but honestly think it's strange that your DB and SIL would us the same names for their children, I couldn't imagine using the same name my siblings/IL's gave any nieces/nephews for my own child.

Wow, you really didn't follow.

The name 'Joey' was the OP's late father's name. The OP's siblings have a different father, so 'Joey' is not a family name to them. They never met the OP's father after whom her son was named.

I'd usually be the first to say 'get a grip, nobody owns a name and anyone can use it' - but in this case, YANBU. It's very odd that they've named TWO kids with the exact same names as your kids, especially as one of them was the name of your father, not theirs.

Cattenberg · 01/04/2025 14:35

They are extraordinarily lacking in imagination. It reminds me of the episode of Father Ted in which Dougal named a pet rabbit “Mrs Doyle”.

mathanxiety · 01/04/2025 15:59

YANBU.

I'm surprised to see the poll has YABU and YANBU about equal.

The girl named Joey is especially unnecessary. They could have named her Josephine. And Levi isn't a common name - these parents should have chosen so.ething else.

No, you don't own a name, but what they've done is really not ok.

Cattenberg · 02/04/2025 11:17

Some MNers are absolutist about the idea that nobody owns a name.

”AIBU to be upset that ExP’s new partner has changed her name to mine by deed poll (first name, middle name and last name) and a lot of people think her social media posts are mine?”

“YABU, no one owns a name. She can call herself whatever she wants”.

SoMauveMonty · 02/04/2025 11:22

They're nuts. Neither Levi or Joey are that common, or currently v popular. I'm with you OP, giving your children the identical names to your sister's children is really odd. I know imitation is supposed to be the highest form of flattery, but blimey 😕
