Dog barking!

I know this has probably been talked about so much and I’ll get slated but I am at my wits end.

to start I am a dog owner and lover, grew up around dogs of different breeds. I have also always lived in places where you hear dogs, kids, mowers, get together etc and they don’t bother me in the slightest.

but one of my neighbours got a dog about 6 months ago and all it does is bark, all day every day, their back door is open so it’s not shut outside and I’m pretty sure someone’s in but they seem to be oblivious to the bark or just don’t seem to care.

it’s constant high pitched, generally barks don’t bother me, my own dog is no angel however this one is really getting to me, I cannot open the windows in the dry weather. There’s lots of dogs on my street and they all bark at times but this was one is non stop.

Like I said I have my own dog and sometimes she barks in the garden but I get her in, she’s never left outside to bark, I wouldn’t want to annoy my neighbours.

luckily my own dog is taking no notice of said dog barking however I am.

I am not the confrontational type and don’t like any drama between neighbours but I am at my wits end.

wwyd? I’m pretty sure someone is in so surely they must hear it?!

bearing in mind this is a few doors down so dread to think how annoying it is for anyone right next door.

i am surprised no one else has mentioned it - if they haven’t already!

I have had to have polite words with the owners before regarding their child who was bullying mine, well they actually approached me first asking why my child won’t speak to theirs anymore and I told them that their child had my child’s life hell at school but they were very much the ‘never my child’ type so I assume they have the same attitude with their dog.

Someone up our street has 7 dogs so you can imagine the noise of them.
when they start yapping its never ending.
A few times others and including me have shouted out our window loudly to nicely say shut them fucking dogs up.
I dont have a dog neither do i want one.
Tbh i dont think there is much you can do other than thank god you dont have to live with it.

You need to tell them politely that it is unacceptable noise and they must keep their doors closed to reduce the impact for neighbours.

We had similar a while ago and in threend all neighbours had to talk to the owner who eventually booked if it in to day care when she was at work. It still barked when they were in but at least we had a reprieve when they were at work.

We have a dog, like you the odd bark is obviously fine. Constant barking isn't so don't think you have to put up with it.

Can you report it to the council or Dog warden???

If they like that about their child, there doesn't seem much point in approaching them directly

Nosaucelikemintsauce · 31/03/2025 13:14

If the noise is regularly more than 30 mins the council will be interested... Ring for assistance.. Usually a form to monitor the length /how often..
I have spent a week 'training' my ndn and his yappy fucker...
This weekend I reaped the reward of my efforts.
It involved a radio station and a speaker..
Ddog yapped more than a few moments the volume went up. Ddog stfu radio went down. Who says you can't teach and old ddog /man new tricks? Never heard a peep yesterday!!

'told them that their child had my child’s life hell at school but they were very much the ‘never my child’ type so I assume they have the same attitude with their dog.'

It's different with a non stop barking dog though and surely all your neighbours would back you up?

I have a neighbour with 2 yappy dogs who yap constantly. I don’t know how they stand it to be honest.

I have a dog, all dogs bark occasionally, but this is all the bloody time. They seem to have a dog flap, or keep doors open so the dogs have free run of house and garden so I don’t know if they just don’t hear them when they’re inside or they’re just ignoring them.

They’re not approachable and there have been several shouted arguments between them and their next door neighbours and I know some have complained to the council. It stops for a while, but starts up again a few weeks later.

They live behind me so I can’t hear them when I’m indoors, but I know as soon as the nice weather arrives and I want to do stuff outside, they’ll be barking constantly.

My own dog drives me nuts when she barks when someone knocks on our door (only a few seconds and she shuts up when I tell her too), I don’t know how they put up with the constant barking all the bloody time (they’re retired so home most of the time, well their car is on the drive most of the time so I’m assuming someone is home), let alone the rest of the neighbours

My neighbour two along has the yappiest, most high pitched dog and it's at the point we dread the nicer weather. When it's not so nice they bark for maybe 10 minutes twice a day. In the nicer weather it can be on and off all day long, dawn til dusk. It was a lovely quiet street til they moved in with their dogs and you can hear them the entire length of the street. No apparent attempts to train them. They don't come over as approachable at all but I suspect someone spoke to them last summer because it seemed like it was contained to ten-minute bursts for a while. I honestly can't overstate how disruptive it is to just enjoying your own garden in the sun.

My neighbour had a dog who just ran around barking in the garden. He’d put her out at 6 in the morning, it woke me up, also late at night, as well as loads of time in the day. It was the kind of bark I heard from wherever I was in the house. It was so irritating. I asked the owner nicely several times, he did nothing, so I used to just shout “shut that bloody dog up” whenever it was outside. The dog died a few years back, I was so glad. It’s sad for the dog as it was clearly a very anxious dog. It was a collie so not a yappy type dog, and he clearly did nothing to address the dog’s anxiety. He has 3 other small dogs which yap any time you pass the house. Some people just shouldn’t own dogs if they can’t train them.

We don’t have a dog warden. The only recourse for barking dogs here is to make an application to the justice of the peace and that’s a long legal process.
