In my defence, I have had a horrible time featuring death which has left me on a swing between dark depression and f*ck it do it now you might be dead tomorrow.

I bought a pair of shoes that I really liked but were a ridiculous amount to spend on shoes of any kind. I feel a bit sick when I think of it. I will keep them as its not bankrupting but it is stupid out of the savings money. I do like them but it was really really really stupid. No one should spend that much on a pair of shoes.

Hoping I am not alone and someone can make me feel a bit better with similar tale that didn't end horribly.

Happy hunting
Things you don’t want now or don’t use or whatever, could you sell them ? I admit that I don’t tend to buy and sell much online , but one man’s poison is another man’s pleasure ( or however the saying goes ) and might be worth a try with the zapper thing?

LazyArsedMagician · 31/03/2025 10:39

I think most people have, don't sweat it.

I also think that a lot of people find value in stuff others wouldn't - for example, my sister has a car on PCP (or something) - she pays around £350 a month for it. I would never. But I have a Mulberry bag I splurged on, which she would never do.

Swings and roundabouts. You can't take it with you.

We like them 🤷‍♀️. I grew up with parents who liked antiques. Dad taught me about craftsmanship and we spent a lot of time at antiques fairs as kids. Dad had a particular love of antique silver and gave me an antique silver photo frame as an 18th birthday present, which I treasure. I’m not so into clothes/shoes/bags (each to their own of course), but I still have a fondness for well crafted silver. I hope my DC will get pleasure from it once we’re gone - they’ve been told not to split the set up!!

Just to say I saw the photo of them and think they're really beautiful. I love silver, and sculpture, and shapes, and things that feel nice. And your cutlery is like a set of beautiful art pieces, that you can also hold and use!

Thank you for showing us.

(Also, I think you have freed me up to buy a set in ProCook that I thought were too expensive at the time!)

Not as much as some on here but I stupidly fell for online advertising and bought two drastically reduced cashmere jumpers from a retailer which is supposedly quality stuff from a European site. They arrived and one was OK but not as nice as I'd hoped, and the other was polyester and elastane so I attempted to send them back (I was offered exchange or a refund if I returned them). Cost to return them - to China - is nearly £30 and it has to be tracked. The woman in the PO said it's a complete scam and they will try to say the parcel was lost and won't refund anyway so to consider selling the decent one on Vinted (I'd have to get a friend to do it) and give the other away.
I'm really annoyed with myself because I don't usually go for new brands unless they're recommended. I should have known better!

There was a thing about this particular cashmere jumper scam on radio 4 a few weeks ago. Not only do they scam you with the returns thing, they also managed to clone some peoples debit or credit card. Might be worth looking into and getting a replacement card if that’s how you paid.

Lazer hair removal. Absolute waste of time and money… which I’m reminded of daily as I look down at my hairy nether regions! 🫣😂

Oh, that's a shame. I had laser hair removal on my legs about six years ago, and for me it was the best money I ever spent. It was painful and took a long time - about ten sessions of 90 mins each I think - but before then I never wore shorts/skirts/went swimming without hours of preparation! (my then partner had said surely it only takes 10 mins to shave your legs - ermm, no!!)

Now I never think about it, the hair hasn't grown back, and I wish I'd been able to have it done earlier.

@SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter

£300 on a (replica) Victorian dress for a murder mystery party! No one else dressed up, so it was both an expensive and embarrassing mistake!! It's sitting in my wardrobe sneering at me! I would like to sell it to recoup some of the money, but no-one would actually want to buy it, because fashion has moved on since the 1860s!!

Have you tried those re-entactment groups? They have them for Regency, Victorian etc. From what I know they are obsessive about having accurate dresses and many make their own. If yours is accurate, you may have some luck selling it there.

@Plantmother71 @Fruitytutti223 @LyndzB - there is a photo of the cutlery upthread.

BiglyWords · 31/03/2025 11:06

I just spent 2k on a surprise 60th birthday party for 12 people for DH. It's not quite the spirit of the thread title, "something you couldn't really afford," as I can afford it, but the thought of spending 2k for one night out was giving me palpitations. We're not big spenders don't mention the horse and apart from house repairs, 2nd hand car, holidays, we don't spend a lot. But it was a fantastic night, and absolutely no regrets. Can't take it with you...

tollouse · 31/03/2025 11:10

Burberry trainers £660. They aren't even good quality-bits fell off them after a few wears.

DancingLions · 31/03/2025 11:13

I always keep some emergency savings that I don't touch. But, other than that, life is for living imo. I'll be working, at least part time, until 67 and at that point will be ready to slow down. That's if I'm still around! Sure I might live another 20 years after that, but that's no time at all really and I have no idea what my health will be like then (isn't perfect now). So I take the holidays I want to take, buy the things I like. I won't go into debt for things, but if the money is there I'll spend it. No regrets!

Arraminta · 31/03/2025 11:15

A million euros on a beautiful but dilapidated farmhouse in Italy. It was bought as a joint family enterprise with visions of merry bucolic gatherings under the Tuscan sun.

It was the money pit of all money pits. Italian bureaucracy is brutal. An ongoing, angry dispute with neighbours. Rampaging wild boar. Thirty billion mosquitoes. Local plumber developed unhealthy obsession with DD1. Exploding septic tank. The outside kitchen wall fell over during a storm. It was carnage.

We couldn't sell it fast enough! We never speak of it now.

Berryslacks · 31/03/2025 11:16

Ah @krustykittens your post brought a little tear to my eye. Enjoy your longed for doll. I hope you can keep painting for many years to come. Also thanks to @WhyDidIDiddle for this fantastic thread so enjoyable! And @edwinbear you have been so patient and kind in your replies. I love your cutlery and the story behind it. I would need a thread oof my own to list all the expensive questionable purchases I have made over the years.

Limth · 31/03/2025 11:16

I bought Versace trainers for £850.

They're beautiful.

They rub me to fuck.

I can't wear them any further than the corner shop.

Have you pitched this to Netflix as a six-part comedy drama? 😝

clickyteeclick · 31/03/2025 11:18

I hear this all the time but for me it didn’t work… it was on my bikini line. I had about 12 sessions too!

My last cat was an acquaintance's unwanted pet so we took him in. The most loving little cat you could wish for.
He was a martyr to bladder stones and a few other more minor things as he got older.
Over the last few years of his life he needed more treatments and several emergency surgeries etc so I got a credit card with the longest 0% interest rate I could and all his treatments went on that. It was used purely for him. People looked at me incredulously when I told them I had a credit card just for my cat. He lived to 20 and cost thousands.
I don't regret a penny of it but I do gulp a bit when I think back to "George's credit card" bill!

That's very cute that your cat had his own credit card. It's just so CAT! You wouldn't get dogs wanting their own credit cards.

Daren't let my cat know about the possibility; he thinks he's deprived as it is!

I can help you with this.

Buy some of these - the bigger blister pads
www.compeed.co.uk/products/?category=blister

put them on your feet whereever the trainers rub and wear them for short periods with big gaps in between if you start to feel a rub - ideally with socks.

It takes a bit of time but you end up with worn in and wearable shoes without bleeding holes in your feet.

Thank you for this heads up - I'm so annoyed with myself but the company ad popped up on another site I use regularly so I was stupidly trusting 😡

My pets (cats and dogs) have their own savings account for emergencies, and a revolut pocket each to buy their food/toys/treats. They even buy each other birthday presents from their own pockets!

Patterncarmen · 31/03/2025 11:26

We just spent £750 on a joint birthday weekend at a very nice country hotel with dinners/days out. Worth every penny. We could have taken the caravan, and spent half that, but, well, we can afford it. Makes up for the days birthday=discounted cake from the bakery and a cheap bottle of wine, which was most of my life!

kweenkweenie · 31/03/2025 11:30

And I thought my Zara Home golden cutlery with engraving was expensive.
Best cutlery I have, so no regrets either.

rabbitwoman · 31/03/2025 11:30

Recently for my 50th birthday I went to visit a wonderful lady, a 'bra witch'.

She took one look at me, told me I was in the wrong sized bra and bought out all these wonderful, whispy, gauzey things that somehow held my 32Fs in a rock hard embrace. They were so beautiful they bought tears to my eyes.

I had a strict budget, but ended up buying three - and a jumper - for £600.

And no, I don't wear them, they are too beautiful. But I am going to get them out as soon as I get home, burn my sturdy M&s £30 old reliable so I have no choice.

Might take someone's eye out tomorrow, though.
