To wish I'd never bought my children Ipads?

I have six year old twins. They have never had ipads/tablets until this Christmas where I relented and bought them an ipad each.

Worst thing I ever did. I'm quite strict. with them They are only allowed an hour on a morning on weekends and same after school weekdays. It's still driving me insane. Pre ipad they would have been watching TV or playing at this time on a morning. Now they are glued to their ipads watching absolute brain dead kiddie trash on YouTube. I've had to send them to the kitchen for my sanity.

Can anyone relate? Is it too late to tell them santa needs the bloody things back?

The creep happens, week 1 you're all "it's 20 minutes homework and 45 minutes at activities".

Next month it will be "20 minutes homework, 20 minutes on app, 45 minutes at activities"

In 3 months it's an hour a day playing, plus on car journeys and also a couple of hours a day at weekend..

And as the creep happens, the resistance to taking it away increases from the kids, the more they want to use it etc...

Come back in 8 months when you have some actual lived experience of kids and tablets...

Edited

Our eldest has a tablet. She knows it lives in the car. She also knows it's only for 'big journeys'. She asks if it's going to be a big journey when she gets in the car, and if we say no, she plays eye spy, chats, sings or plays other games. If she's feeling a bit tired she might whinge a bit and ask for it anyway, but responds well to a cheerful, but firm response that she can't have her tablet now but she can when we go on the next big journey.

She's had her tablet for well over a year, and if anything our rules are stricter now than when we first bought it for her, so 'the creep' doesn't happen in all cases.

Why did you buy these for 6 year olds?!

Get rid. They’re young enough to believe you if you say naughty elves stole them in the night.

These devices are not good for developing brains and what they’re watching is utter twaddle.

But you weren't exposed to them at 2 years old ...

Quite. It’s also not about this poster’s body (or her mind, rather) but about her children’s minds. Their brains, impulse control, dopamine… the iPad will screw it all up.

It's mad to think you are ethe voice if experience after a week 🤷‍♀️

You think you’re the voice of experience with no experience, having made it very clear your children don’t have tablets - yet you speak with some sort of authority. 🙄

Well, we can, because they're designed to be addictive... parents will tell you about the creep... They will tell you about the tantrums, the attitude, the regret.
The studies will show you how awful they are for developing brains...

But no, you have alllll the experience in your few days..

Look - the research says none for babies and toddlers and limited screen time for children. That’s what I’m doing. Excessive use is the issue, not use per se.

🤣 they’re doomed. The human race is doomed.

Limited use can remain at school. I rest comfortable that my children won’t be part of the experiment.

doodahdayy · 08/04/2025 08:25

Ridiculous buying children that age tablets. We probably do have a bit too much screen time but I’d never plonk my kid down in front of a tablet to watch whatever they want. It’s awful seeing kids sat down in restaurants and cafes with the stupid things. Even worse little kids in prams.

We’ve established that and as I said, you do you.

raffegiraffe · 08/04/2025 09:51

Controversial option but mine are teenagers now but had tablets from young with no time limits. Compared to my friends kids with limits mine were far less obsessed with screen time and I remember were the only ones playing out on a group holiday. And they are still fine now

I was speaking to someone else and you came back along to quote me. If you keep quoting me directly you can’t complain when I respond.

Yes “you do you”. I know. That’s what I will be doing.

You were speaking to someone in response to a comment quoting my previous comments. So the entailing discussion was centered around my comments - hence my response. That seems like a normal course of events in a discussion.

When I was a kid I didn’t have an iPad but I had an educational tablet that was loaded with educational games and interactive books

A Leap-pad? Think they’re still available.

Yes oh my god! Had no idea the name of it. Just googled it and that’s unlocked so many memories.
OP, get them a leap pad instead haha!

Leappads are no longer made for a reason.
Expensive, Expensive software, slow no where near as good as a cheap android tablet.
