To wish I'd never bought my children Ipads?

Goodnurseorgremlin · 29/03/2025 08:22

I have six year old twins. They have never had ipads/tablets until this Christmas where I relented and bought them an ipad each.

Worst thing I ever did. I'm quite strict. with them They are only allowed an hour on a morning on weekends and same after school weekdays. It's still driving me insane. Pre ipad they would have been watching TV or playing at this time on a morning. Now they are glued to their ipads watching absolute brain dead kiddie trash on YouTube. I've had to send them to the kitchen for my sanity.

Can anyone relate? Is it too late to tell them santa needs the bloody things back?

It’s illogical to change something that’s working well for us. Can you please reference your assertions that my children’s use (which is not “excessive”) is negative or is it just a belief you hold?

Come back in 8 months and tell us if it's working well for you,or if is a problem. You really can't judge it in a week.

Well, using food as a reward for good behaviour isn't great either 🤷‍♀️

”Can I have an ice cream”
”if you’re good we’ll get one after lunch”

Get a grip.

I wouldn’t allow it to become a problem. They’re not a permanent fixture, if it’s not working or too much hassle they’ll get removed. 🤦‍♀️

Your children have had iPads for a week. 7 days. You can’t yet talk about addiction because you don’t know what the future holds. We are in an era where there has never before been so much research into the negative effects of iPads and phones on young children, and it’s well known now.

If you are using removal of iPads as a punishment that shows that your children are already too reliant on them. In only a week. No matter how much you think the apps are just “educational” or “it’s just Kids YouTube”, they are absolutely getting hooked.

And for what? The iPads are bringing nothing to your children’s lives that they wouldn’t have without them. Certainly nothing good. They have all the time in the world for iPads and phones when they’re older.

Television is not comparable to iPads and phones

Your beliefs and opinions also aren’t the same as facts.

AlwaysCoffee25 · 06/04/2025 12:24

I hope if anything, my children are able to maintain a sensible debate without resorting to opinions asserted as fact and arguing with people online because their opinion differs. The irony that you’re so against tablets - where are your kids now whilst you’re so invested in this thread?

Hopefully they won’t grow up to be as rude as you are in discussions.

I’m at home in bed sick while my son is at the beach with his father for the day. Why do you assume my child must require a tablet for me to have down time?

Ha ha, out swimming with their father.

The facts are that personal devices are much more addictive and damaging than TV.

The creep happens, week 1 you're all "it's 20 minutes homework and 45 minutes at activities".

Next month it will be "20 minutes homework, 20 minutes on app, 45 minutes at activities"

In 3 months it's an hour a day playing, plus on car journeys and also a couple of hours a day at weekend..

And as the creep happens, the resistance to taking it away increases from the kids, the more they want to use it etc...

Come back in 8 months when you have some actual lived experience of kids and tablets...

Again... It's rewarding behaviour with food.

It sets up life long relationships telling them that sweet food is a reward for behaviour, not something to be enjoyed for what it is an in moderation 🤷‍♀️

Tablets and phones also prime them for that kind of closed off, constant tapping, dopamine rush. There is no need for any child or pre-teen to have these devices. It’s especially dangerous while their brains are still so young and forming.

The poster wants to compare it to me as a grown adult mucking about on a web forum on a lazy Sunday sick in bed. I’m an adult and my son is a child. There are many things I do that he should not be doing.

GiraffeCup · 06/04/2025 13:21

It's mad that @AlwaysCoffee25 is saying how tablets are not a problem in a thread where the OP is regretting the decision! And the OP is not alone, SO MANY parents regret it and see the shit they are.bit no, AlwaysCoffe with her entire 7 days if experience knows she just will be better and her kids couldn't possibly be affected negatively. Because if all that experience she has. Ha ha.

You have no idea about the creep or how either me or my child will behave going forwards. You’re being melodramatic and making assumptions based on your own personal beliefs that hold no value in practice. You can no more assert that my children will become screen addicts than you can that every person who tries alcohol becomes an alcoholic- that’s what you’re arguing, that any exposure at all, leads to addiction and that’s simply not true.

Because of my ability to parent and control the situation. You’re speaking as if they’re parasites about to infect my brain. My body did not become devoid of logic and reasoning the moment they entered the threshold.

Well, bizarrely the OP started by asking for advice and was told by the majority of people to remove the iPads completely. Her only other post was a little defensive and it sounds as if she will be keeping the iPads.

A generation have already been experimented on with tablets and phones and studies show that, now that they have grown up, these kids are saying they wish they hadn’t been given devices so young. All the evidence points in this direction and the tide is turning with awareness. More and more people, thankfully, are not allowing their children to have iPads or phones.

I don’t want my child to be part of further experimentation so he will not have any phones or iPads through primary school at the very least.

AlwaysCoffee25 · 06/04/2025 13:30

Well, we can, because they're designed to be addictive... parents will tell you about the creep... They will tell you about the tantrums, the attitude, the regret.
The studies will show you how awful they are for developing brains...

But no, you have alllll the experience in your few days..
