To be surprised people think the clocks are going back?

Seen quite a few saying clocks are going back this weekend.😂

Back in Winter. Forward in Spring.

It's been happening for years.😏

I mean most people just wish they wouldn’t bloody change.

Picklepower · 28/03/2025 19:33

I just say clocks are changing. I never remember which it is nor do I really care. Now that phones update time automatically I barely notice and try not to get hung up the lose an hour sleep thing, the time is the time

applegrumbling · 28/03/2025 19:35

Spring forward, fall back!

BananaSpanner · 28/03/2025 19:36

To be fair, at least they know they’re doing something. I’d forgotten they were changing at all.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 28/03/2025 19:36

I don’t think it makes much difference to many people’s lives, particularly as the clocks change themselves now. So it’s easy to forget which way they go.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 28/03/2025 19:37

I usually get it right but I have to really think about it. Even when I know they are going forward or back I have to think for a while about what that actually means in terms of time. I'm poor at maths so maybe that part of the brain isn't great.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 28/03/2025 19:39

Spring forward, fall back. Lose an hours sleep in Spring gain an hour in Autumn.

BMW6 · 28/03/2025 19:39

Spring forward, Fall back is the easy way to remember

Jabberwok · 28/03/2025 19:40

It's just a saying...I used it tonight knowing full well they go forward

As an aside does anyone know why Greenwich mean time was set at that time and not the more useful/better for the South of the UK summer time? Why choose to run clocks so that it's dark so early in the winter

Caravaggiouch · 28/03/2025 19:40

It’s just people saying one thing for both occurrences, even though it doesn’t make sense. Like how all school holidays are now being referred to as half term, even when they’re at the end of a term. V annoying.

Rhaidimiddim · 28/03/2025 19:41

Fall back.
Spring forward.

Spring forward, fall back!

This is all you have to remember....

Createausername1970 · 28/03/2025 19:41

I thought it was last Saturday for some reason.

I was highly confused when the alarm went off on Sunday morning and it was still daylight. I had prepared myself for a dark start again.

UndermyShoeJoe · 28/03/2025 19:41

I mean it’s a lovely Mother’s Day present isn’t it. One hours less sleep.

So midday is the middle of daylight hours.

I believe it is to prevent children in Scotland having to walk to school in the dark and thus reducing accidents.

Greenwich mean time is set based on noon being the mean (across a year) time that the Sun crosses the Greenwich meridian.

Agreed, but which way would you leave them?

Constant Summer time would mean it starting to getting dark around around 3.pm onwards in the winter. Possibly leading to more accidents around school leaving time.

Constant GMT would mean it would start to get dark around 8.30 in the evening in the summer, and dawn would occur about 2.30 a.m.

Both alternatives are problematic, which is why they started being changed, I believe.

Daisydiary · 28/03/2025 19:49

It’s hardly difficult but as with many things, it often surprises me how many people don’t know basic stuff like this 😐

Settle in the middle.

Do you work Sundays? If not, can’t you just sleep an hour later?

Only if you’ve got young kids and a crap partner/no partner.

Edited

Gmt was worked out in the latter part of the 17th century. It wasn't until the mid 19th century and train timetables that the country settled on using gmt across the whole country. The timing of gmt has nothing to with scottish school children but yes if we went permanently to bst they would suffer
