Seen quite a few saying clocks are going back this weekend.😂

Back in Winter. Forward in Spring.

It's been happening for years.😏

I envy people who aren’t aware this is happening. I’m not a fan of the dark evenings and have been looking forward to the clocks going forward since October.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 28/03/2025 20:00

I'd rather someone said back when they meant forward than said "the clocks change." They're still the same clocks, they're just going back or forward! Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if that expression was part of the reason why some people can't remember which way they are going.

Incidentally, why is it considered so much worse for children to have to walk to school in the dark than walk home from school in the dark? Even in the far south, it gets dark at about 4 in the darkest part of winter. Some primary schools close earlier than that, but it must be peak chucking-out time for secondary schools, not to mention anyone who has to go to an after-school club.

It’s hardly difficult but as with many things, it often surprises me how many people don’t know basic stuff like this 😐

Every time, my friend messages me on the Sunday, confused. I'm like, just look at your bloody iPad/phone!

Spring forward, fall back!

Easy enough to remember

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 28/03/2025 20:04

Noon is set in GMT to be when the sun is highest in the sky - crosses the meridian. As someone said, before railways this would be set locally but o after a national time was needed and Greenwich with the prime meridian was chosen.

Noon has a physical meaning - it would be a real shame if we lost that totally.

The mean (average) thing is also interesting but for another time.

Spring forward, fall back!

This is how I know too!

Bogginsthe3rd · 28/03/2025 20:07

It's spring back and fall forwards for anyone struggling to remember. (Fall = late summer in American)

MissRoseDurward · 28/03/2025 20:07

GMT was about setting a precise time for ships to set their chronometers by for navigation purposes - they needed to know when noon was, the time when the sun reaches the highest point in the sky.

Summer time was introduced during the First World War to save fuel and give people an extra hour's daylight in the evening to work in their gardens and allotments. (Although some people had been advocating it before then for health and social reasons - having all that early morning sun in summer when everyone was asleep.)

In the Second World War there was Double Summer Time - summer time, GMT +1, in the winter, then another hour forward, to make it GMT +2, in the summer.

I remember the last time we tried staying on summer time. I don't like dark mornings.

Because car drivers are more likely to still have their lights on in the morning, whereas in the evening they may not put them on until it’s quite dark.

that’s what I was told, although nowadays many cars have automatic lights don’t they.

lifeonmars100 · 28/03/2025 20:10

It really messes with my head for the first few days then I get used to it. Changing the clock on my microwave is a real pain, I have to get the instruction leaflet out as I can never remember how to do it.

CountryQueen · 28/03/2025 20:10

Rhaidimiddim · 28/03/2025 19:41

Fall back.
Spring forward.

Why does this mess with my head?

meditated · 28/03/2025 20:12

For those saying it is not very noticeable as phones change automatically, etc - I remember reading that accidents, car accidents, suicide rates, and similar go drastically up on these days even though it’s only one hour change. It was all to do with the importance of good sleep and especially going to bed similar time every day as to not skip any of the different stages of sleep.

I am sure soon we will stop changing the clocks, like some other countries have done now.

applegrumbling · 28/03/2025 20:16

ToKittyornottoKitty · 28/03/2025 19:36

I don’t think it makes much difference to many people’s lives, particularly as the clocks change themselves now. So it’s easy to forget which way they go.

I wish my cooker and microwave bloody changed themselves.

Bumpitybumpbumplook · 28/03/2025 20:16

applegrumbling · 28/03/2025 19:35

Spring forward, fall back!

Spring ahead
Fall behind … (autumn)

BlackDollsEyes · 28/03/2025 20:17

It's about time we stopped the clock changing nonsense!

Zanatdy · 28/03/2025 20:21

So easy to remember spring forward

ToKittyornottoKitty · 28/03/2025 20:22

applegrumbling · 28/03/2025 20:16

I wish my cooker and microwave bloody changed themselves.

Neither of mine have the time on them thankfully!

AInightingale · 28/03/2025 20:23

BST is completely pointless in Ireland really. Just gives us dark mornings for weeks in the autumn.

Hortus · 28/03/2025 20:23

I am old yet still surprised at the incredible stupidity of many many people. How anyone has got to adulthood and still doesn't know that the clocks go forward and back each spring and autumn is beyond me.

MsPug · 28/03/2025 20:25

Well you spring into spring and fall back into autumn

applegrumbling · 28/03/2025 20:26

ToKittyornottoKitty · 28/03/2025 20:22

Spring forward, fall back!

We don't have fall in the UK.
We have Autumn!
