YABU. Why can’t extra prisons be built? It would create jobs etc as well as keeping criminals off the streets.

Daisytails · 28/03/2025 14:09

Yet they’re threatening prison sentences to parents who are struggling to get their children into school or home educators because school isn’t the best place for their children. It’s bonkers!

zzplec · 28/03/2025 14:11

How long do you think it takes to build more prisons? They're not going to magic them up within a few months.

Money

They don’t have to live in areas with antisocial behaviour. It doesn’t directly affect them so why would they care.

Lovelysummerdays · 28/03/2025 14:13

With all the spare money they have? It’s definitely a cost cutting exercise. It’s nearly £30000 a year minimum to keep people in prison. Cost increases with security levels.

JoshLymanSwagger · 28/03/2025 14:13

The prisons are full.

Where else are they supposed to lock people up - the attic?

They have to let some out to put more in.

olderbutwiser · 28/03/2025 14:17

Our incarceration rate is pretty high by European standards; we’d do better spending the money on reduction of reoffending through mental health, education and training and rehabilitation.

ghostyslovesheets · 28/03/2025 14:25

Well if you read the article you will see that new prisons are being built and that they are considering exploring the idea of a scheme to assess people for early release.

if prisons are full you are going to have violent offenders on the street anyway - because they have nowhere to go! Better those who have been through some assessment and rehabilitation coming out the other end to make room

Coolasfeck · 28/03/2025 15:23

It’s cheaper and less damaging to spend more money on social care to prevent youngsters evolving into criminals. Otherwise we’ll eventually end up like America with no social care, loads of people with severe untreated mental health issues on the streets and mega prisons.

ChevyCamaro · 28/03/2025 15:39

OFGS.
a) there is a huge program of prison building across the uk
b) the prison estate was starved of cash and facilities for years and years. When people talk about the frontline, THIS is what they mean. The prison estate was allowed to fall to bits at the same exact time mental health, NHS, education, council funding etc etc was also suffering massive cuts.
This is what happens. More people fall through the cracks, commit crime and need to be incarcerated.
Unfortunately, due to cuts, there’s nowhere to put them…
c) Nobody gives a shit about prisons until stories like this come out.

Well exactly… assuming you are one of many who would be happy paying higher taxes to get the infrastructures needed back on track?
