To stockpile 72 hours of supplies

seriouslessness · 27/03/2025 13:23

..in case of disaster or attack. A new preparedness strategy inspired by Nordic countries and Germany, who already do this.

Is this something you already do, or will do?

72 hours stockpile?! 😂

Your thread would have made far more sense @seriouslessness if you'd said 72 days!

I live deep in the sticks, and no-one comes here unless they live here (it's not a through road to anywhere,) and we keep at LEAST 2 months of supplies 'stockpiled.' (Some stuff we have 4 months stockpile, some even more!) I'm a little bit of a prepper, and always have plenty of everything (apart from fresh obviously - like milk and bread - as you can't stockpile that!)

But I'm not a bit of a prepper because I think there's going to be a war or something catastrophic, it's because we run out of stuff sometimes here (in the nearest market town) and it's often several weeks (or more) before some things are back in. DH and I even have a 2-3 month stockpile of our meds, as sometimes they don't have them in and they can take 2-3 weeks to get in!!! Plus, as I said, we live in the sticks. You learn to stockpile living very rural, and not just 72 hours worth! 😆

mushroomshroom · 27/03/2025 15:24

Noone is. It’s only you who has mentioned it.

@seriouslessness reacting to something & stocking up is panic buying 😆

Psha - I keep enough for 74 hours, so there! Take that, amateurs!

We have enough loo roll for months - learnt our lesson 😂😂

suki1964 · 27/03/2025 15:24

Living as rural as I do, we always have a stockpile, everything from UHT milk, to a months medicines and everything in between

January storm had us off grid for 5 days and many of the roads were impassable for 2/3 days

We have a multifual stove for heat ,( the same said storm has supplied us with enough wood for the next five years so far ) a small genny for the freezers, we were working with a gas ring but DH found a small gas cooker that he's got working again, runs off a bottle and now that's in one of the outhouses . We have candles, wind up torches, head torches and a wind up radio. I always keep two battery packs charged for the phones, and to charge the head torches. DH also has some garage lights that he hooks up to 12v batteries so we have decent lighting in at least one room

I don't prep incase of the bomb - I shall kiss hubby goodbye and then kiss my arse goodbye - I have no want whatsoever to survive an nuclear attack - I prep because of weather , which can disrupt supplies here for weeks

@seriouslessness Clearly I was being a little facetious! Cyber attacks would fall into my crazy situations though depending how bad it was. No one is being unreasonable to have some food in if you are at risk of severe weather. But in a crazy situation you have a lot more to worry about than just food.

Yeah if the shit does hit the fan for real, three days of food is sadly not going to do much.

Exactly , surely most people have random stuff at the back of the freezer or cupboards that could get them through 72 hours. May not be tasty though.

Not for three days it’s not.

@seriouslessness think about how many people rely on daily medications. Breakdown of law & order would scare me more.

Butchyrestingface · 27/03/2025 15:26

There's an underground military bunker not a million miles from me. I suppose I could always literally head for the hills in the event of nuclear or undead attack. But I suspect most of Fife will have the same idea.

mushroomshroom · 27/03/2025 15:27

@seriouslessness it's a description of an action, length of time isn't really relevant.

I agree. But the advise is not coming from me. Three days certainly isn’t much.

We've got one of them too (less than half hour's drive away!) I wonder if we live near each other! Shock Still, we may struggle to get in as everyone would head for it! 😆 (Like on an episode of The Simpsons.)

Yeah, 3 days is nothing!

iloveeverykindofcat · 27/03/2025 15:30

I should have more stuff really. I often have less than three days worth of...anything...except the special diet for my cat who is allergic to everything in the world except turkey. Its surprisingly hard to find a reliable supplier of wet food that is just turkey. We don't run out of that or she'll scratch herself raw and also go delinquent. Apart from that I'm quite disorganized about supplies. My grandparents - and parents really - would be horrified. They're from/lived in a country where supply chains were interrupted all the time due to sanctions and war, so although they were on paper quite well off, they were very much aware of the whole 'you can't eat money' thing when it came down to it. They stockpiled everything. I've gotten spoiled and gone quite far the other way now.

BatchCookBabe · 27/03/2025 15:29

Yeah, 3 days is nothing!

Maybe it’s just to wake people up a bit, that you do have a responsibility to be able to take care of yourself (and others if possible) and not expect help for at least a few days?

There's one in Edinburgh too - recently renovated. We'll be grand.

BoredZelda · 27/03/2025 15:33

I lived in rural Scotland when I was younger. It was normal for us to have 2 weeks worth of supplies in as sometimes in winter we couldn’t get anywhere. It’s a habit I still have 40 years later.

Agree

so……bread flour and yeast
plain flour and bicarbonate of soda

to get over the bread issue

oh and see image …..for the other

Beowulfa · 27/03/2025 15:34

Is 3 days worth of food and some extra bog roll really "stockpiling"?

I lived in a houseshare once where there was a mystery bottle left over from a party; wrapped in cord (pirate ship style) with no label. It was freely available at every party afterwards but remained unopened. I often wondered how far into the apocalypse we'd get before opening it in desperation.

Everyone keeps saying water 🤔 I can’t imagine a scenario where the taps ran dry. I’ve never bought bottled.

A few years ago, the area where I lived was severely flooded. While my house was on high ground so remained dry, the local water supply was contaminated so the whole area had to buy in water. For some it was just a few days, for others though, a few weeks.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 27/03/2025 15:39

I’m stocked for three days.

But really, what happens after that?
Do I really want to survive nuclear apocalypse?

I don’t think so!
