To stockpile 72 hours of supplies

..in case of disaster or attack. A new preparedness strategy inspired by Nordic countries and Germany, who already do this.

Is this something you already do, or will do?

We've definitely got more alcohol in the house than bottled water so it would be a fun time trying to survive

Smallmercies · 27/03/2025 13:55

This is why everyone should aim to carry an extra couple of stone - the 3-day fast will take us back down to a healthy weight.

AdoraBell · 27/03/2025 13:58

3 days would be a starting point. If you want to then build up. You can look at threads on the Prepper board.

IShotTheDeputyItWasMe · 27/03/2025 13:59

They've always been told that.
It hits the news every so often to freak people out but it's long standing advice.
I think people (where possible) should keep a few days of water, food and essentials like meds or toilets rolls. Just in case they get cut off because of weather or something, rather than anything sinister.

@neverknowinglyunreasonable

Oh come now, wine must be stored at a convenient arm's reach - one or two in the bathroom/near the loo, a few to the side of the sofa chair, one or two being chilled, a secret one rolled up with your socks. You'll be up to the necessary 15 in no time.

Anything less than 15 shows a lack of moral fibre in my opinion.

Hwi · 27/03/2025 14:01

Aye, right, the Russians can't kick the Ukrainians out of their own territory in Korsk, but they are going to attack the Nordic countries? What a load of shite.

I am not normally someone who would be overly worried but based on reading this yesterday I impulse bought some emergency long life food supplies and a solar charger and water purifying tablets. No harm having it there just in case.

Could you please share which solar charger you bought?

Do they have to be the same 15 bottles? Asking for a friend

They're only planning to attack the tins of tuna.

You're supposed to cycle supplies out, using the oldest and replenishing as you go. (Especially wine.)

I live in London, If we didn't have electrcity or water for 72 hours I'd need a gun and a big stick rather than a stash of tinned bins and loo roll.

It’s not just about war. Or Russia.

It could be extreme weather related, outages, cyber attacks, dangerous pathogens etc.

This is a good brochure, if you would like to read more.

Havent stockpiled anything but DH has been bulk buying his favourite Coke Zero since it went on sale in Asda so in an emergency we will have to drink that.

Yeah there is not a lot of vitamins in wine. That is why you have to drink quite a lot.

Then again, they are not just talking about food but also things like cash, a radio, medicine etc.

Seems like they are thinking an attack on our banking / computer / delivery systems /medical .
I think this is the attack they are waiting for at any time .

Dotjones · 27/03/2025 14:10

Three days is way too little, it's a normal amount of supplies anyone should keep in their home. "Stockpiling" would be over six month's supply in my view, anything less is normal household management.

Think back to the early days of Covid, how quickly the supply chains fell apart and how long it took to get a reliable supply of things like pasta and toilet roll back in the shops. And that was during peacetime where supermarkets were working overtime to get stuff delivered and on the shelves.

The most important thing is a supply of enough water. In a SHTF scenario a lot of people will die of thirst long before they die of hunger. It's difficult for someone like me who lives in a flat but I've always got enough water to keep me going for a few weeks. Food you can cut down on and make whatever you've got last longer if you ration it. Few of us have a reliable private water supply though (and those that do need to plan for if the supply gets tainted by chemical warfare).

Yes, you are absolutely right.

We have a little more than this. Some of it is because we bulk buy to save money. Some is because we live remotely and have had issues with our water supply and power cuts. After covid I realised that everyone is out for themselves and the government can't always be relied on.

Smallmercies · 27/03/2025 14:12

Don't forget Christmas and birthday presents for your family - imagine celebrating with 3 baked beans, a square of loo roll and NO PRESENTS! 😭

LBFseBrom · 27/03/2025 14:12

I already stock up, always have.

What on earth do you think is going to happen?

JHound · 27/03/2025 14:12

Is it not the norm to have much more than this? I don’t go shopping every 3 days. I am about to do an online shop but could last on what I have in the cupboard / fridge-freezer for easily a week.

cardibach · 27/03/2025 14:13

Onlyvisiting · 27/03/2025 13:33

Who has less than 3 days supplies in?????
Edit other than utterly skint people who are forced to live hand to mouth

Edited

Depends on day of the week. I shop on a Monday and run stuff down before it. Emergency on a Tuesday and I’m golden. On a Sunday and I’m fucked. I’m not exactly skint, that’s just what I do because I don’t have much storage space and also eat a mostly fresh diet…

Chersfrozenface · 27/03/2025 14:14

If the electricity went off for 3 days you'd have to eat the contents of the fridge and freezer first. We would have some, er, interesting meals after a while.

Note to self: must get more gas canisters for the camping stove.
